The Sony Xperia 1 is the latest from Sony and represents a collaborative reboot of their smartphone lineup. Bringing all of Sony's electronic devisions together including Sony Alpha, CineAlta, Bravia as well as gaming and high end audio - Sony are using all of their strengths to develop a smartphone that will compete on the level of the iPhone, Huawei P30 Pro, OnePlus 7 pro, Samsung Note 10+ and other flagship phones.
The phone features a 6.5", OLED, 4k HDR display, 3 cameras that are capable of Eye-AF, HDR recording in 4k CineWide 21:9 video, and can render in 10 bit 4:2:2. This is a contender but how does it stack up?
This phone is the one to watch. It features a unique design for a smartphone and is capable of not only incredible stills, but is the best video smartphone on the market.

This is so weird, you were supposed to review its camera capabilities, and yet you ended up reviewing the whole thing and your review was way better than other actual "Tech" KZfaqrs. You were so honest. I'm new to this channel and even though I don't know much about camera's (a lot of things you were talking about just went over my head), you still made me subscribe. I hope you continue doing these kind of videos...

I know, Buy the S10 because it is supposed to be better, and in automatic mode if it is better, but the RAW is virtually unusable, limited dynamic range, shadows and highlights unrecoverable. Sony sensors are still far superior and it is sad that no one takes it important in the smartphone market.

I too was a long time iPhone user until I changed to the Xperia 1. I love this phone! It shoots great video and can take awesome photos. I really don’t know why there’s been so much negativity about the camera. My only gripe is I can’t shoot 60fps in Cinema Pro but maybe that’s because the app only offers 2k and 4K. I’d be happy with 1080p if I had the option to shoot at 60fps. Regarding wireless charging, personally, it’s lack of doesn’t bother me one bit. Putting the phone on a wireless base to charge means you can’t pick it up and use it whilst it’s charging and I’m pretty sure it’ll be a lot slower than charging via usb.

@Steffany Santos I doubt that. But I also acknowledge that my LG power adapter malfunctioned after 6 months, exactly when it got out of warranty, and the LG G6 died in just a year and a half after I bought it. All this despite the fact that I used it for photography, KZfaq, and emailing only. No gaming! Don't different regulators check the quality of these products?
@citrocar1028

@Steffany Santos what about the mid-range phones, which are neither expensive nor cheap, coming from China? I guess that this is the mid-rangers' time. They're pocket-friendly, but do provide you with a nice experience. I don't think I'll ever be able to buy an Apple or a Samsung flagship phone😕. They're so expensive 📣🔊! The mid-range also reminds me of the middle path in Buddhism: neither too harsh nor too lax. Moreover, China seems to me be on an innovation spree! What Chinese do today, the rest will do tomorrow.

Great video. I too have the Xperia 1, and I love the quality of the image/video it produces. Too many people, reviewers included, forget that great photography is more about capturing a scene in it's natural state, versus adding all this post processing to make the photo Instagram ready. I am huge fan of how the Xperia 1 takes natural looking shots. In some cases, the quality reminds me of my A7iii. Glad you highlight this in your review. I do have a question though. I am a newb when it comes to video editing. Could you explain what you meant by having to apply a LUT or convert the BT2020 HDR 10 vid to REC709, and why this needs to be done?

It's was a game changer for me. Makes taking stills more natural (like a camera as you said) than what we have with iPhones and the rest of the smartphones. Than I just didn't understand what sony was doing, too many phones, too many mid-ranges and I just switch to One Plus and then iPhones.

Back in the early days of digital I bought Sony-Erricson phones primarily to provide a portable camera. They always did make the best camera phones. These were certainly not smart phones; sort of candy bar phones I think they were called. I used to increase the image by a few percent to store images at 1800x1200 or 6x4in prints. I still have the images today in my annual folders and they still look impressive on a monitor ;-)

The headline made it seem as if there was some revolutionary quality jump, but i'm watching this now, and he says at the 7 minute mark that this camera is "on par with the iPhone." WTF? A third lens doesn't change photography any more than it does when you have interchangeable lenses on a DSLR. Any of the other 'features' this thing offers is the type of thing that shows up on a specs sheet, but no one who views your images will ever recognize as having had anything to do with those images.

Nice review. In the comparison section, I think that Huawei P30 pro would be an obvious contender. In terms of stills, it has both 5x optical zoom, ultra wide (also useful for macro), and raw support in camera. Put that into a phone with a in screen fingerprint reader and with a 40w fast charger included (70% in 30 min) and you have quite the package. Disclaimer I currently own the Huawei, and had it since April. Therefore bias may occur.

All I want is the 4K 60fps with stabilization that the Note 10 + has. They have awesome contrast adjustment in their modules and Sony has the horsepower and the camera know-how to get it done We love the Slow mo 1080p. The 4K HDR, the Cine Alta app.. but you are absolutely correct we need an ecosystem of editing power that will allow us to put it all together on the fly. Xperia is going to be a game changer. I have converted Soo many friends and family to the Xperia and with each model, they are getting it right bit by bit. Be excited.

@@reldies5364 I actually want even less additions in terms of software for my Android experience. I feel like I'm swimming in mud by year two of any Samsung smartphone. The Pixel will give me the bare Android OS I'm looking for. I will miss some of the custom stuff Samsung does but I want to get 4 years out of each smartphone and if I can strip it back down vs loading a custom OS and voiding any support I feel like I'm more in charge on the Pixel.

@@BrianAndersonPhotography I get where you are coming from, at the moment I use an Iphone altough I am more of an Android guy I have to admit that I quite enjoy how much cleaner it is. Nevertheless I think my next phone will be a Note because of the screen size, the pen and samsung DEX. I am interested to see how long it will smoothly work and how long it will recive updates, which is my main concern with android and especially with Samsung.

@@BrianAndersonPhotography get the Xperia 1, clean software and receives pretty fast updates considering it's not a Pixel. All you need to do is download Pixel Launcher from the Play Store, and you can download the Pixel icon pack from the same developer to get the same look on the home screen. It's about the same on the default Sony one either way. Xperia devices seem to have less hardware and software faults as well, looking at the frequency of Pixel 3 call failures.

I had great expectations with Xperia 1, but there is a but. I like your take on it, been wanting you to talk about the camera phones with this depth. Sony needs to do more with this and with the video capabilities too. I also agree that Android need good video editing apps.

Cheers Ted, I'm getting a Pixel 3a (second hand) and have the Pixel 2, and again flagship phones from the big 3 are all good, I don't think Sony have enough clout to take on Samsung, apple and google like they have with canon nikon fuji pana Olym etc in the camera world, but as long as the consumer gets Pro's and not Conned, we could all be happy. Thanks again Ted

Buen analisis.
