The deep intelligence of Sony engineers and their experience in the field of cameras makes most people not understand these many features and they are not appreciated. This is the smartest camera in a phone that I have seen in my life . Steve Jobs was a fan of Sony cameras, and I remember that Steve Jobs used to visit Sony factories and meet senior Sony engineers with the aim of improving iPhone cameras, and let's not forget also that Tim Cook also went there to see the new Sony sensors ..It's a shame that Sony is underestimated because of some KZfaqr who throws bad words about Sony cameras because he likes another product or doesn't know how to use this camera.

@@SomeGadgetGuy exactly. We are on the 5th generation of this device and Sony has only added more camera features. But from a basic platform, they have expanded since the mark I. I see these reviewers every year giving basically the same reviews and doing "camera tests" in full auto all the time. It's just pointless to me. They know it's a niche phone, yet they treat it like a pixel, iphone, or galaxy. Either way, I'm happy there are a few niche reviewers who actually review these devices to their fullest extent

I'm so happy they brought seamless zoom. (could be smoother but it's fine) That was one weird thing I didn't like about the last phone - you had to pick your lens before shooting "like a _real_ camera." But that's whats cool about a phone as opposed to a dslr, I don't have to "switch lenses." They are all there and should be able to all go at once if I really want. It opens up more possibilities - my LG V30 had a mode that shot with the selfie cam in the corner of the frame, so you can do a vlog style video right from the camera app itself.

In less than a month, the xSperia 1 Mark 5 has became the standard for photography and videography. I saw all the videos here on YT criticising Sony for the excessively complex camera app; I've been a professional photographer in the film era, and the Mark 5 has been the first phone where I have the possibility to use all the experience I have as photographer. I can only imagine why non-professionals are calling for a dumbed-down experience - like the Apple-Samsung-Google photo app provides to casual users. Well done, Sony...

With Filmic going subscription, it's nice to have the option of a phone with similar levels of control (though still not exactly there with color and exposure granularity in shot) and similar features like focus peaking and racking, better mated and optimized to the hardware. It still irks me how any company can give you a video mode where you CANNOT tap to focus or expose for fully a third of your frame and think that's job done. Almost ANY aftermarket solution is better. But they often don't have access to the full range of resolutions and frame rates of the phone. Sony is doing it right.

I get that a simple point and shoot experience is easier but I don't get why people say Sony camera apps is convoluted. Did people forget learning exist? Obviously there's the simple camera app for everybody else to use. Ofc the debate between cameras and phones exist but nobody would bring a kilogram worth of cameras every time. But having similar controls to a camera is very useful especially when you want to adjust a setting or two. Would've been nice if they can add it to their apps like any others do but it may cause some unnecessary changes. It's a learning curve but it will help you get used to camera terms and settings when you do go cameras.

@@SomeGadgetGuy that's another fair point there. They can create great cinematography but can't on the same but smaller platform? I know it's a smartphone but it's basically a camera in a phone. How is it any different from other camera phones like the Xiaomi 13 Ultra or the Vivo X90 Pro Plus. It's basically those two without too much computational photography. Instead of the phone taking over, you are the driver. You set destination, you set your gears and your off to your destination. But all people want is a free ride. I'm not saying the Xperia is a perfect phone but if they really want to review this as another generic device, what exactly are they telling their customers?

I wonder if you could help with an answer to a question that Sony's chat helpline couldn't answer for me. Does the phone have a bokeh mode in for video? I can see from online info that in the Photography Pro app's Basic mode, there is a Bokeh Mode icon when you have the Photo option selected. However, when you select the Video option in this same area, I think the Bokeh Mode option disappears - i.e. no Bokeh Mode in video. Are you able to confirm or otherwise?
@SomeGadgetGuy

SUPER basic. There is a bokeh video mode in 1080p but not 4K, and it only ONLY seems to work with face detection. You can't set it on another focus point. I'm probably NEVER going to use this given the natural focus fall off of the larger main sensor. Would have been nice to have on the tele lens tho.

Thanks for that. It's a shame, but not a surprise. If anything, and in a way, I'm surprised they have any video bokeh mode at all given the absolute radio silence on the subject from their marketing. On the other hand, if they made a fuss about it, they would probably get shot down for its' limitations. I can't help thinking that improvements in bokeh modes should be the top priority for camera development in phones. Accepting the increases in sensor sizes, bokeh still seems to be the biggest weakness of camera phones compared to dedicated cameras. Given the physics of small sensors and the space limitations of phones, computational processing seems like the only option. Camera phones already seem to be making strides in their other natural weakness, low light conditions, and I'm sure further improvements will come. Talking of which, the Xperia 1 V seems to be getting very positive reviews of its' daylight performance (both photo & video), reasonably positive reviews of the new Night Mode for photos, but seems to be regarded as a bit weaker for video in low light, and to have a generally lower dynamic range (but conversely less noise and artifacts) than its' more computational competitors. Having used it yourself, do you agree with that, or do you have a different experience? As always interested in your take.

It's tough to do a fair comparison without REALLY digging into NERDCORE tech. Like, critiquing dynamic range. It's a red flag to hear someone complain about "lower" d-range, but with less noise. How is that person measuring and comparing? What modes are they shooting in (where HLG vs s-cine can make a HUGE difference in grading)? Are they mentioning native ISO (where the Sony can also slide down to a crazy low iso25)? I'm honestly not sure how I would fairly grade sensor performance at comparable "noise". Would that give the Sony a stop or two advantage in video quality? There are a LOT of moving parts in a conversation like this, and it's REALLY not as easy as "I shot two clips, and this one has the better colors!"

Absolutely fantastic video and break down. I really have no patience or time anymore for KZfaq "tech reviewers" who act like they just can't figure out the camera system. Or they literally are incapable of doing so. As you say they are simply displaying that they are not good at either photography or tech. I'm no tech guru by any stretch if the imagination and I figured out the Xperia camera system after a few hours of playing around with it. Far too many KZfaq "tech reviewers" literally don't know how anything works outside of an iphone. But that just means they know nothing. And are thus a waste of my time. Why on earth would I take photography advice about any device from someone that only knows how an iphone works? That would be like me getting advice on high performance cars from someone that only knows Volkswagen cars. Just utterly asinine.

It kills me every time one of them complains about something basic on an XPERIA, but then shows off their cinema grade mirrorless camera to shoot CRISPY b-roll... K... 🙄

@@SomeGadgetGuy great point. Not only do most of them film their videos on mirrorless cameras.....they do so on Sony Alpha cameras!. So it's even more baffling. But imho it's by design. I believe they have a financial incentive to essentially do FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) marketing on other brands that are not Apple or Samsung. They did this all the time with LG phones too...

The downside of having three separate apps is that it consume more internal storage space than a single Camera app. However, the upside to it is that each app can be perfectly tailored to its intention. If I want 21:9 4K, I go CinemaPro. If I want 16:9 4K, I use VideoPro. If I want Alpha-grade manual control, I use PhotoPro. Of course you can cram everything into the single Camera app, but it can end up being all cluttered and messy.

I pretty much only shoot in the expert raw app on my S24 ultra, it feels wrong to shoot in auto for me lol. I would love to use an Xperia 1 mark 5! Seems like a great system.

One Question I have about the Sony 1V that nobody seems to answer ist, that it says it has a 48megapixel main camera, but does bin down to 12mp. So can't I take 48 Megapixel photos? It would be important, for example, if I got to a museum, and take a picture of a painting, its very handy if I can still read the little badge about the painter etc on it. Currently I am using my xz1 (since 2017), and it has 19mp, but often I can barely read the text, when the paintings become bigger and I have to go aways. Its meant as a mental note for me. Also, does the 1V have a feature where I can still have a on-Screen shutter button in the pro mode in landscape view? Its not that I would use it anyways, the physical Shutter button is my to go USP for the sony anyways, but If you hand somebody the phone they are probably too stupid to take the photo (Had this often with the XZ1 too, when It would decativate the camera after a few seconds). Does the pressing of the Shutterbutton with the phone in Stand-By still bring my straight to the camera? That would be very important to me, because I always liked going straight to the camera for a quick shot, without fiddling through the login.

can help check does it have settings to display the time stamp on the picture for each photo taken? I just like to know when the photo are taken when looking into it when i wash them out instead of looking at the metadata

Do I need a ND filter for outside? I tried to record video outside at a wedding and resorted to using the pixel camera app. It seems to be similar to my ZV1 but I was wondering if there is a feature that makes it possible without one.
