We can FINALLY wrap up the Sony XPERIA camera deep dives! Because the 5ii is SO similar to the 1ii, we can also combine TWO reviews in ONE! Here's the final word on Sony's hardware this year, as I see it. NOTHING shoots like a Sony, but does that mean it'll be the right fit for your photo needs? Let's dig in!

The Xperia 1 II is actually what got me back into photography. I got bored many years ago with it as a hobby, but for some reason, having a phone that functions as an actual camera along with all the media features hooked me back into it. Just the convenience of having a fully functional (with some obvious compromises) camera in my pocket is something that can easily be taken for granted.

The Sony Xperia phones this year are *criminally underrated.* I'm certainly no pro but I enjoy mobile photography very much using my LG G6. I have very little knowledge of how Sony Alpha cameras work but I guess everyone has a beginning at some point With that being said, I truly wish for Sony to be successful in their smartphone endeavors and have more KZfaqrs review like this instead of constantly ranting about some name

Owning any of these Xperias is reminding you that you are a photographer or cinematographer. You are in full control of your creative pursuits and most importantly, it fits in your pocket. If my current phone (OG Pixel) died, I'd probably buy one of these Sonys to replace it. It'd be annoying because I'd have to switch carriers (Republic Wireless has limited phone support), but I wouldn't want to deal with practically any other device that has come out recently, they all have drawbacks in categories that are important to me.

wouldn't it be nice if more reviews ended with "I think you should buy this phone if you're a person who does ______ and likes ____ and enjoys _____" or "This phone will be a great fit for someone who really values ______" Because every person will have particular wants and needs. I will be shopping a new device next year and personally I value a lightweight user interface experience and a headphone jack and it seems to me that Sony is one of the best options to meet that need. However, if I was a "I need every tool in the toolbelt" kind of use I would be looking more at an LG V60 (or replacement). I Really wish this winner/loser mentality would go away, we're not children and we're allowed to like and value different features of products. These social media circle jerks are great for companies but really bad for consumers and I really hope people start wising up to this idea of the more options in phones that I have the better. Imma say that again for emphasis. THE MORE PHONE OPTIONS I HAVE THE BETTER.Sorry for the rant I love your videos no one should feel bad for buying a phone that they love.

Dude this has to be the most philosophical review of a piece of tech, that I've seen. Especially when it comes to the camera. You nail it. Especially when you describe the herd mentality..of buying tech and how other reviewers approach this camera. I don't have a Sony, I have an SE. But if I wanted to get into photography and not carry a camera around with me, after looking at your review, this would be it. Well done, for giving a proper review and I hope Sony are watching and will treat you to an early preview of next year's model. Giving a camera like this to a reviewer who is only interested in over-saturated colours or fully 'automatic mode' is like giving a prime steak to somebody who only enjoys McDonalds burgers! Nuff said!!!

As a photographer, I can say I love having the Xperia 5. It fits the need and idea of having a good camera with you at all times. I've gotten used to carrying around my gear or at a minimum a premium point and shoot. Since purchase of the Xperia 5, I carry a primary camera less and less. Should also note, that I am a heavy Sony User. From having a few Alpha Cameras to having a few RX line cameras. So it was only natural that I'd fall in line with the phone, which attracted me with the photography aspect. PS: Thanks for the review. Been tempted to upgrade to the 5 ii.

Hiya Juan! Xperia 5 (i) user here. Looking at this years beefed up offerings kinda makes me regret pulling the trigger on the first gen of these. (No headphone jack, less optimised cameras) I suppose I'll need to invest more time in mastering the manual mode to take advantage of my hardware! I do hope at some point that Sony might give us 1st Gen buyers that 'pro' camera app, but maybe that's not possible. Nice to here your thoughts about the current pair, hopefully Sony keep going for at least another generation.

I started the "Sony" range with the Z3, and frankly I was a bit disappointed by some things. Audio screen and battery life were great for the time, but the pictures weren't the best. I came from a Lumia 830 and PureView really was ahead back then. Then I got the XZ Premium, which was one of the best smartphone of the entire year it was released. Everything was great, even the camera, but only in daylight. If you wanted a great low light picture, you had to go full manual, and the sensor was already really capable back then. And a few months ago I got the 1 II. I was tempted to wait till the 5 II, but the 1 II just looked so good. And after using it, I can say this is the best smartphone I've used. It feels natural if I can say it that way. I think it's due to the software, little touches like Side Sense and the way everything works with the hardware. Audio, screen, cameras, it's really nice ! What impresses me is the gap that exists in the XZ2 for example and these year's Xperia.

Speaking strictly in terms of still photography if you use pro mode on say a s20+(or fe) and willing to put in the work in lightroom, how close will the pictures look in the end? But now you're making me think about spending some money, because this seems like the way to go. I'm actually using my old LG v20 as my audio recorder as well, and I have a v 30 as my main phone, (and secondary shooter), but I think I'm going to take a look at this Sony. @@SomeGadgetGuy Believe it or not, I read a review of a cheap CPL filter with a clip on that is PERFECTLY SIZED for the V40 , which I bought, and believe it or not that filter doesn't suck, and then I bought a pack of ND filters, 8, 4 and 2 stop, which also are pretty good, and so... it takes a lot of work, but as you always say, if you dig in to the manual controls of the V40, you can do some really great work. The lens is definitely limited in certain scenarios, but overall, it's pretty epic. One thing... I can't use the wide angle lens with the filters... it cuts off some of the view. This is the clip/CPL filter I got. Oh... 37mm, so I just got 37mm ND filter lenses, and they screw right on. They also can screw one on top of another, so I can get up to 14 stop. Awesome..... I've never been a Sony Xperia user or fan, but both 1 ii and 5 ii definitely got me interested with Sony's smartphone offering. If I got to choose between the two, I'll take the 5 ii. I don't really care much about 4K screen, 3D ToF sensor, and wireless charging. Plus, the 5 ii is cheaper than the 1 ii and still retains all the essential components from the 1 ii. 120Hz screen refresh rate may sounds like a bonus, but I don't really do a lot of mobile gaming. The only question left for me to find out is how would the 5 ii performs against my current Microsoft Lumia 950 in full on *manual* mode. I don't really do social media photo uploading much, so I never bother with Auto.

Hi. Might I ask comparing the Xperia 5ii and say the OnePlus 8T or Galaxy S20 FE which one has better performance overall, louder speakers, better Battery life and overall better front & rear camera systems in terms of dynamic range, clearer audio when recording video, more warmer, more natural colours ,wider field of view in selfies (& rear cameras) ,less noise with zooming in and better low light photos?

Man I'm quite torn between the 1 and the 5. I like the bigger screen on the 1, but also the 120 refresh rate on the 5. I'd love to hear experiences from people that used both phones.

They should have added a SCENE mode in the Dial. This would have made it more complete and competitive with other SmartPhone cameras. This mode was on my a5100 mirrorless camera before. They could have put there the NIGHT PORTRAIT, HAND HELD TWILIGHT, PORTRAIT, SPORTS ACTION, ETC.

I really like the new xperias. Sony should introduce a filter system for the 1ii and 5ii for better exposure control in bright conditions. They also should have a dedicated external mic available. I don't understand why the 1ii is not dual sim.

@@SomeGadgetGuy In the past Sony would product decent accessories for their phones. For example for the Z and ZX series of phones there was the STM10 stereo microphone, ex750 noise cancelling earphones (which doubled as binaural stereo microphones), etc. Since the launch of the Xperia 1 and 5 I had hoped Sony would launch accessories to match their capabilities. I live in hope they will. Maybe they need to reach a certain sales target first?

Not exactly 3x optical zoom. It is rather expressed in focal length (in mm) and they are 16 mm (ultra wide angle), 24 mm (wide angle) and 70 mm (telephoto - perfect for portrait shots). It has digital zoom in between those focal lengths up to 200 mm on the telephoto end.

I guess I'm kind of the "niche" person these phones are aimed at (never been much of a fan of iPhones or Galaxies). I was a Motorola guy for a long time, but my last two phones have been Xperias. These with their narrow form factors (I have small hands lol), headphone jacks, legit stereo speakers, IP68, SD slots, and slab designs already appeal to me. I am a bit of a photographer, I take photos with my T5i Rebel DSLR for work, so I find most smartphone cameras to be mediocre by comparison, especially with focal range. This with its telephoto/wide/standard modules and heavily customizable software, on top of the dedicated spongy camera button that I already love, looks to be the perfect phone for me. It really checks every box I have. Only issue is my two year old Xperia XZ2 Premium is still going strong, battery and all. It'll probably be another year or two until I'm ready to buy a new phone haha

Can someone test the natural bokeh or depth of field from portrait shots for 1/5 ii telephoto camera? There's a lot of reviewers not testing this. I wish if I bought it, at least i can create something bokehlicious. I am aware that wide angle and main can create little to no bokeh except for macro shots.
