Great guide, very helpful to see all the steps involved. I tore down my phone to replace the entire frame with screen and the battery. However when I removed the plastic cover like at 0:40 there is a tiny piece of adhesive on the back which when removing the cover ripped the metal heatspreader off the pcb. To put it back on I used some tiny dabs of thermal glue on the chips and precisely aligned it back how it was. Phone works just fine.

Outstanding step by step video, great job @pbkreviews. I have a question id love your advice on, the fingerprint reader on my Xperia 5II has gone bad, i purchased a replacement cable and I'm wondering if you had any idea how i would go about removing the old fingerprint sensor and cable and installing the new one i purchased ? Would i need to remove everything from the phone as well as the battery or is there a little easier way you could advise ? Not sure what to do about this.
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You would need to take the back plate off, remove the screws on top and bottom covers and remove those covers. Then disconnect the battery cable and remove the battery as well as remove the speaker assembly on bottom and disconnect the white coaxial cable from the corner, also remove the motherboard then remove the screws on the side of the frame holding the cover/bracket that holds the fingerprint reader flex and other buttons in place to gain access to removing and replacing it. Then reverse the steps. Basically yes you would pretty much need to take the entire phone apart.

Thanks for the great repair video, much appreciated! My 5 II was damaged in AUG this year when I wanted to take some photos in a pool, after few weeks of silence the phone started to recover, and as of now everything is back, almost everything. Except, the connection to O2 network fails (WLAN is OK), tested also in the 2nd SIM slot. The card itself is OK. It seems that obviously there is a defect on the board with the receiver, but not with the card slot I guess. Any idea which module should be replaced?
@PBKreviews

Not sure what will need to be replaced, but the fact water got inside, first thing you should be doing it not using it. You can risk it shorting out and losing all your data as well as rendering the phone inoperable. You should take it apart and disconnect the battery, dry out any liquid inside and use a small brush like a tooth brush to brush off any corrosion on chips or connectors, and then re assemble it to see if it will work. If not, you can try replacing parts one by one to test which is defective. :)

Hi great video, I have a urgent question because I need an important document I stored on my Xperia 5 II yesterday but the phone now is stuck in a boot loop. Not because of a recent update but when the battery was almost empty, I plugged it to a charger and then it turned off. It tries to restart since then but turns off as soon as the pincode screen shows because the battery is too empty. Soft reset doesn't help: keeps looping. Phone is 4 months old. I read on a forum a possible solution: let it charge and loop for hours so the battery charges bit by bit a little more than it uses to restart. Just until there's enough capacity to fully restart. Do you think this can harm the battery/phone? And if so, are there replacement battery's available? Do you agree the ultimate solution could be placing a new charged battery? One step before that, is it possible to stop the loop and charge the current battery after? Maybe by disassembling something so that prevents the phone from restarting and then charge the battery you think? Reactions much appreciated THANKS!!
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks. hmm I would think the best option would be to buy a replacement battery (hoping it has some charge in it) and install the new battery to power on the phone and get your files off. I would also assume the new battery should fix the problem but if its having a bootloop still, might need a factory reset (after backing up all your data) and if still no luck then it might be some other hardware issue causing that to happen.

@@Ashfaaqx yea but its not that difficult honestly. It may be a few more steps compared to them having a charger port board on the bottom that could be easier to replace but the fact that the battery comes with those pull tabs, it makes it much easier. Hi, it's not difficult. Applying gradual heat with a hair dryer for example while prying with a pry tool would make it easier. The only thing that may make it difficult is the fact its glass and you don't want to break it. So you need to take your time. You can also use a suction tool to be able to lift a corner or side of the back plate to get your pry tool under once you heat it up.

The headphone jack does seem to use quite a bit of real estate as many of those phone manufacturers are claiming. I'm not surprised that other manufacturers are removing it, especially when many of the newer smartphone chips are demanding more real estate for bigger chips and better cooling. However, I would gladly sacrifice one or two of those cameras for a headphone jack. But then, who would buy a flagship smartphone with flagship prices that doesn't have one of those top end cameras. Ah well... I hope the headphone jack stays in future iterations of this phone, it's the main reason I bought it.

These phones are huge as hell now a days no excuse not to add a jack in since they are getting humongous. None at all. If there is no jack you will wear out the charger port faster (if you don't use wireless headphones) and you can't listen and charge at the same time with the C port so... I'd rather just have a jack. It's the same bull crap of having ditched the notification light when like you just saw in this video... is tiny as hell. So why ditch it to begin with? I'd rather have that then always on screen nonsense. My Xperia L had an amazing notification light on the bottom man what happened to having a nice notification light? Phones are so dull now a days. Sony might not even release the Xperia 5 iv now since... it has a small screen of 6 inches compared to what everyone is releasing now a days with screens of 6.5 or bigger which is huge in my opinion. That's why I just bought the Xperia 5 ii and will be changing out the screen and batteries when needed. All these IP68 phones are a hassle to open up compared to my LG v20. Removable batteries was best feature phones ever had that sadly went away. Easier to open up your phone and pop in a bigger battery in that sucker. Now we need heat guns lol and more glue to put things back together yaaaaay.

It's never a good idea to wash the phone under water. When they have IP rating, its mainly for accidental drops in water, but these phones are not water proof. They are just water resistant. You probably have water damage in the phone that its causing those issues you are mentioning. You should take it apart, and disconnect the battery cable, clean out any moisture inside, and brush off any corrosion on chips and connectors and then re assemble to see if it helps. Water damage is not covered by warranty.

@@PBKreviews Thanks for the answer, I am going to do what you mentioned. I saw in the video you removed the back cover with the plastic pick but is it that easy just with it or I need to use some heat to make softer the glue that keeps it attach or is it attach with other way? Whatever the case how do I assemble again the back cover? Cause in the video you just put it on the phone and I am not sure if you use some kind of glue or stick. Thank you very much for the answer, I was not very clever with a phone that isn't cheap..

So the charging port cable is not glued to the frame? That would make replacing it a lot easier, now I just hope that the battery pulltabs on my 5ii wont rip once the port is worn out. Well and that thin cable with the antenna connector on top, that thing looks scary too
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, no it's not glued to the frame and if the battery tabs rip, you can use isopropyl alcohol (link in description) to apply some around the battery and let it sit for a minute so it goes underneath the battery and eats away at the adhesive making it easier to pry off.
@or2kr
@or2kr 2 жыл бұрын
@@PBKreviews I did the isopropyl thing with my XZ Premium and it ruined the screen, it is still operational, but it has lots of dark patches across it as the isopropyl alcohol seeped in-between the layers. Probably not an issue with the Oled of the 5ii, but I'd still rather avoid it because of reasons. I have yet to find a repair video though where the battery pulltabs break on the newer Sony phones, so I'm not that worried, just sad that I lost my XZP because of them and finding out later that I didn't even need to remove the battery to access the charging port to replace the broken one. Anyway, thank you for the quick response :D

@@or2kr Oh, maybe you applied way too much? another thing is you need to use 99% isopropyl alcohol or the one linked in my description from ifixit since it dries up really quick. So far I haven't had any issues with any screens but it is a good point to be careful not to use too much. Originally before I ever used it myself, I had those worries but once I started so far no issues on my end with the 99% isopropyl.

@@PBKreviews It was 99% and yes, I had applied too much in the thought of it not being able to damage anything, most of it didn't stay where the strips were and I still had to use a lot of force to remove the battery. @@ddcll9538 Most of the parts are pretty solid, the only things I can think of that can possible get damaged or break if dropped hard enough might be the cameras if the outside glass breaks and shatters the camera glass/lens as well or the battery possibly getting damaged or pierced if the glass back breaks and something from the outside damages the battery. Aside from that, in general most of the parts internally are strapped down or screwed in and I don't see anything damaging internally from a drop aside from outside damage.

I feel you. I live in Canada and Sony phones are non existent over here. For the screen protector, I ordered 2 different ones from Olixar, their tempered glass and film protectors. I've read reviews saying that the tempered glass doesn't stick very well so beware. Will update this comment if the tempered glass is no good. If you Google search using English, you basically only get 2 reliable options, Spigen and Olixar. But to my surprise, accessories for the 5 ii is just scarce in general, because when I googled using Japanese and Mandarin, I could not find anything new than what I already could on Ebay... maybe the phone is too new or not popular enough? Hard to believe, since Sony held a convention in Taiwan.

@@mswkickdrum it's not an engineering failure it's the fact that tmobile doesent want to carry another brand in the sea of brands they already carry. They have exclusive deals with a lot of brands and if you as a phone company want your phone use all T-Mobile services you need to pay them so tmobile can keep its prices low. It's like apple is exclusively carried by a select few cell phone operators abroad because of exclusivity deals. Phone companies need to pay money to carriers to use their firmware for features such as video call ,it can make video calls with others because they paid others for using firmware and it is a possibility that if if the phone gets sales then they'll add tmobile but sales are not looking too bright for any company this year.

@mswkickdrum 3 жыл бұрын
@@reenachauriya4931 no, it's the result of sony not getting their phones certified with tmobile for wifi calling on their network. A failure to engineer the software into the phones setup from the start. I have xperia xz1 compact that is vowifi certified for tmobile from the factory by sony. I believe it's the most recent model so equipped and it's from 2016. This is a choice sony is making and it sucks. I want a new sony phone and they refuse to make one that utilizes the features of a network that serves 98M usa customers. All pixel phones from the very beginning were vowifi certified and they weren't sold by tmobile. I have read that there is some contractual problem between Sony and tmobile that relates to the xperia model Sony pulled out of with Verizon.
