The Sony Xperia Pro-I is a very confusing phone. It's aimed at pro's and creatives that want more control out of their phone and I can see where Sony is going with it. The problem is the Sony Xperia Pro I experience is very confusing and very lackluster. In this video, I'll be giving you my Xperia Pro-I review and going over everything including the incredible design, software experience, performance, battery life, and of course camera. For the camera I have plenty of photo samples including RAW images. Additionally, I did a Sony Xperia Pro I video test against the iPhone 13 Pro and Prores. It's very short in this video but if you want to see more let me know and I'll do a dedicated video. Speaking of that camera, it does have several unique features including the Zeiss coating, phase detection autofocus with tracking options, and it utilizes the same sensor as the Sony RX100.

It's exactly the disappointment I would expect from Sony. Great build quality with a solid idea, but overpriced and largely flawed. Even their camera focused phone still uses their largely lacking and slow camera processing. It's the same story for every modern Sony. It's the exact same problems I have with my Xperia 5 II.

I have both a 1 III and a 13 Pro. And I enjoy the Sony pictures more. They can look like they come from a DSLR (kinda), but the iPhone... The pictures coming from it can look good... And that's it. Nothing stands out, details are weirdly processed, etc. I can understand that the iPhone is easier to use, but quality wise I'm happier with the Sony I think the same goes for this Pro I. It's expensive for sure, but it has its appeal in my opinion

My girl has the iPhone 13 Pro Max and while it's certainly is impressively easy to point click and has the proraw essentially an Adobe camera profile basically which has built in noise processing and sharpening with raw flexibility.... My 1iii and Pro-I do definitely have the edge... The iPhone may have an slightly advantage in low light due to the larger apperture... Admittedly, I also need to find what works best for me in low light as I don't shoot so often in just pure bad light... The pro-i is largely more flexible in post than the 1iii in lower light situations... Because you can pretty significantly underexpose on the pro-i and boost in post... Where as the 1iii image tends to breakdown if you try and push shadows too hard in post... The pro-i also feels like it has a little more give in the highlights as well... Where as the shadow boosting capabilities on the pro-i may be like 50 percent better than on the 1iii... The highlights are maybe only 15-25 percent more salvageable on the pro-i vs the 1iii... But if you shoot a little underexposed this thing can almost boost shadows to the extent that my a6100 can in post... I shoot the phone in raw plus jpg all the time... Most of the time in P mode... And then switch to full manual and speed priority in some situations if it calls for it...

I've had the Pro i for two weeks now. A great device..... This is a real camera!!! The pictures are incredible and have nothing to do with smartphones. The software is extremely intuitive and very easy to use. If you enjoy taking photos but don't want to take a large camera with you, you should definitely take a look at the device. If you just want to take snapshots, you can buy a Pixel 6 for €650 and get a super snapshot...... But the Pro i is something completely different.

The only thing people need to understand is that it's the perfect phone for people who have a vision for what they want their shot to look like... They want the flexibility to take a picture with 100 percent control of the output... And it will take time to understand it's not a for someone who doesn't take their photos/videos very seriously... Even on a standard mirrorless camera since when does point shoot workout for your 99 percent of the time... I would say you are wrong for not recommending this phone... It's should be recommended for people that want all these features or for people really wanting to learn to take better photos... It might not however be recommended for some who has no time or willingness to learn or have any knowledge in the features this has to offer... Also does your mirrorless cameras controls shift locations Everytime you turn the camera sideways or upsidedown haha the reason the cameras controls don't shift around is because they want you develop near muscle memory of the location of the controls... Yeah there are times where yeah it might be nice to shift the controls but it's not necessary once you are used to it... I think maybe there should be a menu option that allows it to rotate... For example when you are using it in portrait rather than landscape like on a tripod... But honestly I prefer to take photos and horizontally 99 percent of the time... It's a phone that should be recommended but with the understanding that it's not going to make you into a miracle photographer... You have to be the brains behind the shots... And honestly, just the act of using a phone like this everyday has made picking up a real camera much easier because I'm constantly thinking with a similar mindset... Now for the most part I can think of the shot I want on a real camera and just nail it almost first try... So I'd argue it's taught me a lot of skills that do translate to a real dedicated camera... So while the phone isn't for everyone... It should be said that it is 💯 for those that wish to use the features... it's nice being able to have this kind of creative control and flexibility ready to fire straight out of my pocket with the push of a button as I definitely don't carry my a6100 all day everyday...

My issue is the price. It’s too expensive. We can talk all day about having full manual control and “pro” settings but there are tons of other phones that offer this. Samsung has had pro mode for years and they were the first ones to introduce a dual aperture that you could switch. Samsung even offers focus peaking. LG has focus peaking and zebras for exposure. Filmic Pro offers way more video centric manual controls and it’s a $10 app. RAW capture is now available on any phone and in tons of third party apps. Rotation isn’t as important on a camera as it is a PHONE which this is. Professionals take portrait shots all of the time. The settings are lackluster and the fact it has different apps for video, cinema video, and photo is ridiculous. The iPhone has been used on professional movies and used to capture professional photos used in publications. It has the most basic camera app but with a few third party options it’s extremely capable and comes in at a far cheaper price point.
@hubbardfan
@hubbardfan 2 жыл бұрын
@@OT4Tech yeah true... it is expensive haha I'm loving mine haha and the Xperia 1iii haha the only thing I miss on the 1iii is the 105mm... filmic pro is also available on this as well which I haven't used in quite some time but it's nice to have an app built by the factory with all things built to work as intended... Maybe in future versions it will add some zebra support or focus peaking... I personally would just like to have focus peaking and a standard histogram... Where as filmic pro definitely has plenty useful features I've found that the app will crash a bit if you try to do something you aren't supposed to haha 😂... Personally I think the phone struck a good balance of extra control and flexibility and still keeping it simple to use for someone who isn't a full blown cinematographer or videographer... Also, still keeping the interface relatively easy to use... The phone is expensive but if you look at the price of an iPhone 13 pro max and then add in the same amount of storage... Then you are getting kinda close... But you do still get a headphone jack and some features a lot of phones don't have anymore... Plus an included fast charger... In general phones have become too expensive... But it happens with everything... Samsung makes great phones too so does Apple and Google... If all phones were the same then it would be pretty boring in my opinion... Let's just hope they keep improving they've made big steps the last few phones and with the smartphone division now as part of the camera department I think it will only get better from here...

@@OT4Tech So you dont have an issue with A Samsung Galaxy S21 ultra phone that costs when it was released almost as much as this phone? The reason I guess that everyone argues about the price is, that Samsung came so much early with almost the same specs, and is now much cheaper, while SONYS is all new and has the same price the Samsung had almost a year ago? The Strange thing is, when Samsung releases their phones, sure with new specs and all, no one talks about how expensive and out of order the prices are, because they are, and not only for Sony phones, its for almost every phone except chinese devices. But there is no discussions for how much Samsung and Apple can take on their devices, ut everytime SONY is taking premium prices on their premium devices is always to much. Despite the fact Storage is expensiv, and 512GB is not cheap, 4K screen is not cheap. So in sense people want SONY to rather LOOSE money than earn money? But its ok for Samsung and Apple to earn money on their phones with expensive parts? I dont get this.... Cinese companies can, do phones with premium specs and premium parts because they dont really have to pay their workers as much as SONY has to pay their or Samsung. Chinese companies gets a lot of support from the Chinese state as well, wich do the thing that a CHinese premium phone costs almost 50% less than a Premium phone from Samsung, Apple and SONY. Sony cant do less prices, because that would get them out of buisness. But for me its strange that Samsung and Apple can take horrid prices, and SONY cant? Makes no sense.

It's difficult for me. The pick up and shoot features are something I kind of need. I can never be bothered to stand around and adjust everything exactly but Sony have so many incredible features no other phone on the market has. The headphone jack to me is the major one but there's also the aspect ratio and other minor things like the lanyard strap and the solid build quality. It's a tough decision.

Thanks Jonathan, for honest review! Very narratively and well made! This phone put my attention of that "tech pinnacle" sensor for mobiles that they took out Stacked sensor from their RX cams, but were so dissapointed that it actually is using sensor area of equivalent of 1/1.3" type sensor. Yess, seen in comments that some Sony fanboys or representatives from company are trying to defend this interesting but unfinished product, this is keeping me smilind and sad though, as how consumers can be tricked nowadays. Yes, Sony does clearly states that this is 1" type sensor in europe and in US they kinda claim its 1 inch, but they do not show at any of their spec sheet that this is CROPPED image corresponding of about 60% of its area.. Thats the worse thing. Yes, the equivalent is about same as pixel 6's GN1 sensor, yes its stacked, it has very fast readout, but overall images comes very washed away and video recording with given Sony's apps looks mushy. If they claim its not overprocessed - they only do mean its not oversharpened. But video stills looks very mushy and with heavily used NR applied. Sony looks kinda fixed using mcpro24fps app for video, but still there are caps and it provides worse footage even than Xperia 5 mk2. As for RAW image files, as I had hands to test them out - there are definately some processing made baking those raw images - some NR preapplied and oversharpening. These are definately not true raw images (yes, even FF dslr or mirroless applies corrections for raws, but on this phone its like next step further). If I would be sony fanboy I would opt only for Xperia 5 mark 2 or 3. This Pro I's price its madness.

@@iluvcakes19 either way, if she does or doesn't adjust the settings, still a non over processed image can be post processed, on a regular phone there will be artifacts that cannot be removed, it's about the processing of the camera and not the hdr and AI, the processing is just too much, turning off AI and hdr and going to manual mode the over sharpening and too much noise reduction and too much added clarity is still there, the point is regardless if the it's taken on auto or manual or pro mode, the difference is still huge, not just the pro i but every Xperia flagships' photos look more like they're taken on a camera than they're taken on a phone and I'm saying that bcuz photos from smartphones...you know, they look different from cameras, not worse but different!, and I'm not saying that in a good way, it could be good for some but not for others since photos from cameras don't look sharp and bright and saturated as how they do on a smartphone, and that's something not a regular person would appreciate, but a photographer will, that's why it's not for regular consumers but more for people who don't like their phones to process for them

"in order to get adequate results to what would you get on other smartphones, you need to avoid auto mode" like seriously, you guys act like auto mode shots are unusable on the Xperia!, sorry but in that I don't agree! Yeah it's less processed, but it doesn't mean that it can't stand next to other flagships in auto mode! the difference is just that in high contrast scenes the hdr on Xperia is sometimes not as intense as on other flagships, and at night scenes the shots aren't as bright as on other flagship, but a slight adjustment can give a similar result, the Xperia tends to give a natural exposure to how you expect it to look like, but by only increasing the exposure in auto mode to +2 will result in a bright image with a bright sky

Great video. How ever lets not fool each other. To get 1TB iPhone pro that records pro res you will cash out 1600 va 1000 on this Xperia for same storage space. Video quality mostly for 120 4k and skin tones is unmatched. And most of all screw Samsung and others for removing SD card. This fact is unforgiving. As that pushes the price to top tier on any of them. So that we can shoot RAW. Phone pricing renders all the phones you mentioned useless for decent storage, and ability to record stunning visuals , no other phone renders colours so naturally beautiful. Not even iPhone pro max maximus ultra Golf Spilberg edition. And if i just want to take pretty videos for my family my S7 edge is great enough. Just like 90% of other reviewers you missed the point of what this is what Sony is doing. Its like give you top tier oil paints and you complain for not having a pencil. All of you reviewers are the same bitching about lack of consumer features. Its called a PRO I so treat it like a magic lantern not a freaking Nokia 310

@OT4Tech
@OT4Tech 2 жыл бұрын
I showcased the tracking capabilities in the video and mentioned things like eye AF and animal tracking. However, the 20fps is not really a huge feature. Phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra are capable of shooting 30fps burst and at times exceeding that. In fact, since they can record 8K 30fps that alone gives you higher megapixel frames vs the Sony just by recording video. The zeiss coating is nice but no need to mention it since Xperia phones have used that coating since the beginning. Additionally, there is no option to use zeiss processing like you get on the Vivo x70 Pro. Rolling shutter is still very bad on the Xperia Pro-I when recording video since this in when you need to worry about rolling shutter not necessarily when capturing photos.

It takes 3 images at 3 different exposures and stacks them like traditional mirrorless cameras. It is not to the same extent as other phones utilizing multi frame HDR + computational processing. However, you can also disable the computational processing on many phones.

LTPO panels are more advanced and have many battery saving benefits so no, if this phone had an LTPO it would have extended the battery life more.

@@OT4Tech not a huge fan of LTPO tech on the market. Theoretically yes, LTPO can be a huge battery saver. However implementations on the market today, specifically phones that ship with LTPO 1.0 (S21, Pixel 6, etc) have their quirks. On Pixel 6 you have the option of fixed 60Hz or VRR. There have been reports of users with VRR with phones never stepping down to 10Hz, users that have 60Hz idle on home screen, users that cannot maintain 120Hz, etc. With Sony you can keep phone at 60Hz, and have game enhancer update the refresh rate while gaming. A simpler, more practical, and more reliable way to adjust refresh rate in my opinion. Until LTPO matures I much prefer the KISS approach.

Well, there are reasons for why Sony chose to do this crop thin on the sensor. The lenses are to close to the sensor because they wanted to dont make to huge of a bump. YOu should be able to have your phone in your pocket, right. Sony could have done a real bump, and you wouldnt be able to have the phone in your pocket. So there is the reason for why this compromise is made. And to be frank, SONY stated its a 1.0-typ sensor, sadly it seemed like a language barrier of somesort for when this info got to america and other places it became 1-inch sensor. Sony has always said its not utilises the whole 1.0-type sensor, and thats from day 1. The thing is, even though the sensor is eqiuvalent to sensors used in other brands like Samsung or apples iPhone the fact is, that other brands still using sensors that are MADE for phones, not cameras. Sonys sensor is made for cameras not phones. So this is an achievment. There are positiv things that comes with this choise. So if you have the opinion its a lackluster phones and confusing i guess you dont understand what you should use this phone for and you aint the customer type its made for.
@OT4Tech
@OT4Tech 2 жыл бұрын
Everything you said can be argued. Leica and Sharp both have true 1” camera sensors on their phones and the camera bump while noticeable does not protrude any more than the Sony. Also, the full sensor is still in the camera. The limitation is through software cropping. Sony clearly states on their own website it’s a 1” sensor so you cannot say their was a language barrier… you’re making up excuses for Sony’s failures.. The majority of camera sensors found in phones are made by Sony and while yes they are made for smartphones they go through the same manufacturing process. It’s the onboard ISP’s that change the way the image looks. That’s why despite 3 different phones from 3 different manufactures having the same sensors, images can look way different. Lastly, when I say the experience is lackluster it has nothing to do with the sensor. It’s the fact you need 3 different camera apps. That alone makes a confusing and lackluster experience. They can easily be merged into a single app. I have reviewed multiple smartphone cameras and I have shot on Sony pro camera for years. I can tell you right now this “ain’t” it chief…

@@OT4Tech FOr me those phones you mention has big bumps on the back, and their quite noticable. 2. It seems like only in US and maybe America, SONY is actually saying 1-Inch sensor, but its not what it says over here in Sweden or Europe or Asia for that matter. Then its a 1.0 type sensor. And even MKHBD explains the crop as a hardware thing. Not Software. Because its to close to the sensor. And why do all reviewers missed the Pixel Pitch that is on this phone 2.4 microns? 3. For me its actually less confusing with this 2 or 3 apps approach SONY has. I noticed for instance when my mother is trying to film, she can never understand she has to scroll among the features within the app. SHe still is searching for video. If she had a SONY Xperia 5 III for instance, she would just have to open up the app for video, and she could film right away. In my eyes its actually less confusing. But we are all different. 4. I get that this phone isn't for everyone. Not everyone knows how to use a camera the correct way especially a SONY phone. But the thing is SONYS smartphones still is the best camera smartphone out there that can mimic a alpha camera form SONY, and makes the very same things as they do. Alpha cameras is also very bad at computational photography. They also has some of the issues Xperia 1 III, Xperia 5 III and this Xperia Pro-I has... But if you plan and knows what you want, you can in sense only do it on the Xperia phones.

Finally someone who has the same analysis as me of Sony smartphones and particularly this Xperia Pro i. It's true that the ergonomics of a 21/9 smartphone is almost perfect, but apparently people don't really like smartphones that are too long and not wide enough, it's too much of a remote control 🤣, 19/9 to 20/9 would not be bad. But Sony's 2 big problems are first of all, the rendering of photo-video a little too natural that the general public does not really appreciate, but above all the price of Sony smartphones. Sony would do well to put a standard photo application that has photo-video processing much like the iPhones, Samsung, Pixel and a Pro photo-video application. I am convinced that with this recipe and $600 to $800 less on the price of this smartphone, it would have sold like hot cakes, especially since Sony remains today to be the last major manufacturer to still offer memory card support and the jack port on its high-end smartphones. Ps: also an option to choose between 60, 90 and 120 hertz (90 hertz being the ideal compromise between fluidity and autonomy), for me all smartphones with 120 hertz should offer this option like the Asus, and frankly a 4k screen on such a tiny display surface serves no purpose other than to drain the battery. The ideal on smartphone for me is the hybrid resolution of iPhones Pro between FHD and 2k.
