The lack of OIS and slower aperture might kill it for me. The ZV1 has proven really useful at work where I put together a lot of video of factory machinery running for training and promotional purposes. This often requires being able to shoot quickly and flexibly, so a tripod isn't particularly convenient. I'm often reaching and contorting to get the position and angle I need while handle so the OIS is great, especially if I need to combine it with electronic stabilization. The longer lens is also a welcome addition, as is the wider aperture; I generally treat it like a 2.8 constant because not only is light gathering ability appreciated, but combined with the sensor size it's also the sweet spot for DoF for my use.

How can we make the camera better for the MKII? Marketing: Who said the new one must be better?

Good job. The removal of OIS is a little baffling here and I wonder how many people will do as you said and look for a good deal on a Mk1. From a photography perspective, I'm probably in the minority here but I really want Sony to release a RX100 VIII. The mk VII is about 4 years old now. I know the market is about vlogging but please!

The mic sounds like an old time walkie talkie... The ZV-1 is a great camera, not sure they gave it enough for an upgrade.

It is a tough one but I am happy with ZV-1 which I can attach extension ultra-wide angle lens (third party) to make it around 18-20mm with OIS

Sony.. why.. No OIS is such a f'n fail. And the mic sucks ass. Shit.. This was supposed to be the perfect camera.

Was waiting for the specs on this before deciding if i should go mk 1 or 2. No s-cinetone, no ibis, no bigger battery, no 10 bit. Dont see any reason to get this over the mk 1.

WOW, was this episode hard to watch because of the bird noise. If the intention was to show how poor the mic was at isolating the speaker's voice in front of the camera, you really succeeded. Another great review (as always). Thank you.

Note for Sony - what you can improve for the ZV-1 Mark III: - strong Optical stabilization (lens and sensor) - More modern sensor: For instance the 50 MP 1" sensor many smartphones use the IMX 989, or the new Exmor T sensor of the Xperia V (yet its smaller size it should be a very powerful sensor in low light). A high resolution sensor would also make better clear image zoom possible and also 4k60 or even 4k120. - 10 bit - almighty S-Cinetone having that, it could be one of the strongest compact VLOGing cameras. I really like compact and versatile cameras, so I really want the ZV-1 to improve. Currently, there are too many drawbacks.

I don't vlog, so sound capture is not as important to me, but if it was important, I would consider the sound quality as unusable without drastic post processing.

Thank you guys, you are the best camera reviewers. I'm still using, from time to time, my 10-years old RX100M2 for stills and occasional videos, that are always noticeably better than shot on my iPhone (Xs Max). I compare those compact cameras to iPhones as those are the ones I can keep in my pocket. So now when I can go for a walk in the forest with my Apple Watch Ultra that replaces as communication device my iPhone I can put in my pocket a compact camera instead. Keep on good job reviewing and comparing!

I think the Mk1 ZV1 was way better than Sony thought it would be. I keep thinking of selling it for a larger camera but I just find it to be so useful time and time again

Does it have build-in ND? How is apeture fall-off along zoom range?

So its the original ZV1 with a worse lens, a worse mic, USB C, and $150 more expensive? 😒 I sold my Mark1 and my Zv-E10 and got a Lumix S5. Don’t regret my decision and seeing this just re-affirms it.

I think, with the missing OIS the camera isn't that attractive. The ZV-1 is such a good overall camera, that I would still recommend buying the old one, especially considering the price. I would love to have something like an 18-50/70mm F1.8-2.8 in a RX100 body. Canon is able to go for 24-120mm, so why it shouldn't be possible the other way!? Nikon also had an 1" DL with a 18-50mm F1.8-2.8, before it got completely cancelt. So it is possible. Such a shame, that camera never reached the marked. This could've changed the way, Sony developed the ZV-1.

I appreciate their honesty. I'm not sure what Sony was thinking? Too many compromises just to have 18mm. I'd rather have the Mark 1.

Considering that there are several 3rd party accessories which allowed the original ZV-1 to get an 18mm equivalent without sacrificing the maximum aperture or the image stabilization, I can't really think of a reason to pick the mark 2 over the mark 1. The Neewer wide-angle adapter in particular also uses a 49mm thread, so you can use the mark 1 in conjunction with ND filters or even polarizing filters.

Still wish they’d put out a new badass photo centric RX100 for us professionals that go places where we can’t take detachable lens cameras.. not into the whole vlog thing they’ve been pushing since Covid.. it would be a good way to release that new crazy sensor used in the phone with the insane dynamic range

Jordan, it's the other way round: SLog2 has a greater range than SLog3. You're running into artefact problems with SLog3 more easily with an 8 bit camera like this one because of its limitations. SLog3 is fine with 10 bit cameras as you have more data to play with and it's easier to grade. When I still had my Alpha 6500 as a B camera I always shot in SLog2 to get the best the 6500 had to offer as this was recommended.

I own the zv1 and I didn’t think the audio was as bad as the new one. The audio from the zv mk2 doesn’t sound too good at all to me. I want the lumix s5 mooing after seeing this video.

This would have been really compelling as a small camera to put on a gimbal like the RS3 Mini if it shot 10-bit video and the internal mics weren't so tinny. It's a sub-$1k "vlogging" camera, but for the average person, the better "vlogging" camera is the one in a modern phone. It's honestly baffling to me that there's no 10-bit recording on the new ZV-1 M2, considering that Hero 11 and Action 3 have that feature, but then I realize that it would possibly cannibalize the FX30 if it had it. I know we've used 8 bits per color for video for decades without complaint, but yeah...

Nikon did 18-50 mm (equiv.) f/1.8-2.8 with the (unfortunately cancelled) DL 18-50. The f/4 aperture on the ZV-1 II is a big lose by Sony. It’s one stop behind. Not the mention the Nikon has Vibration Reduction (Nikon’s way of saying optical image stabilisation).

Having not bought a ZV1 yet I was waiting to see what the MkII spec was like. The loss of stabilisation doesn’t worry me and the wider lens would be handy but if the price has been increased I simply don’t see where they’ve added value and will seek out an old one.

I thought the leaks are being too generous with 18-70mm. This is more in line with how Sony will do everything to keep their 1" From being competitive with their bigger sensors.

Time to find a good used GM1 or GM5 and slap the Olympus 9-18 lens on it. Man, I miss the small MFT camera era

I use a pair of ZV1s I was interested to see if this was a worthwhile upgrade and it does not look like it. I use the Neewer wide angle adaptor on my primary camera and the secondary has a 52mm thread adaptor for filters or to use the ulanzi lense if need although I really dont like how that just hangs off a taped on 52mm ring. Seems like there would really be zero point in me getting one of these but I am sort of hoping they make a ZVE10mk2. That would get me tempted.

Its actually called the Vloggers camera mark II so you are the first one I watched that I will actually wait for my camera to come in hand to see how the hype is. thank you after fully watching. to again go backwards on a new camera taking away the OIS is going to be a Deal breaker, I may just continue to use my Sony Vloggers camera 1 F and wait on the 3rd generation Sony ZV-1M3

I will be sticking with my ZV-1 Mark I In my opinion the 900$ price makes the ZV-1 Mark 2 NOT worth it. In Europe I can get the Sony ZV-E10 and the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for about 1080 Euro with Tax or 910 Euro if you expense it as a business. And the image and video quality will be much better. The 750-800 price range is OK for an all in-one solution like the ZV-1

Just got a deal on one of these used for $500. I really like it’s a lot of fun

9:15 That was only for the first year. After that, the ZV-1 did not need the sony software anymore and now can be used as a webcam in OBS, Teams & Co. just like the ZV-1 Mark II.

I feel like you're holding back. They took out lens stability, high speed slow motion, the mic port, withheld ten bit, no cinetone, had the same sensor and it's more expensive than the prior model. If all of that is true, I guess I'm just not sure how this is being framed quite so positively here.

Given its price, it makes the Xperia 1M5 a better deal. The latter has S-CineStone, 4K120P, real-time tracking and Product ShowCase. The focus length covers 16mm - 125mm.

Well what can I say I think this is a well informed review I am not in the market for a vlog camera but I liked the video and I kept watching to the end

I want to thank Sony for blessing us with this tremendous upgrade. Love the fact that they removed the unnecessary lens stabilization, gave us a Sennheiser MKH 416 level audio quality and all that for a modest 25% price increase. Truly remarkable!

Why does Sony keep omitting lens stabilization on the stuff they target towards vlogger's? They did it with their new wide angle lens too and it drives me crazy and makes absolutely no sense! Crrrrrrrazy

Thanks for your video guys. Happy to see you again. To the camera, honestly, I don't know if I would need the camera. There are so many options. I could use my Smartphone, a GoPro, a ZV-E1, a FX-30, and so on... Why should I buy that camera? It's tough to compare all these options these days....

Biggest update for me is the USB C, the red recording ring around the screen and being able to swap batteries without removing camera from the tripod, the camera would be perfect if it was 10-70mm zoom. PS I use a Sony ZV E10 with a 10-18mm lens as my main camera, and the Sony ZV 1 ii is my B camera and EDC Camera.

Great review…caught the main points well! Didn’t find the mic worked too well, surprised as I found it seemed good on other reviews. Good vlogging or studio cam for most. I think the ZV1 might become too good of deal to resist though if you don’t need the 18mm.

15 months ago I paid 620 USD for the ZV-1. There is still a long way to go for the Mark II. Actually, Nikon had the idea to release 3 DL cameras with 1 inch sensor and one with a 18-50mm lens but f/1.8-2.8. That was 6 years ago. Now we're finally getting that range of focal lengths, but with a lot of caveats and an absurdly high suggested retail price.

Dang it sony if you’re not gonna do optical or sensor stabilized then make the lens 14mm on wide end so we can still have wider view using digital stabilization

This was a very confusing release. The lack of OIS and slower aperture is is what really turned me away from the mark II. The first ZV-1 just looks more appealing due to it's brighter lens and the inclusion of OIS. Not totally sure why Sony decided to deal away with the OIS with this one. Other than that, I am glad Sony is continuing to invest in compact cameras.

9:15 With the original Sony ZV1 the updated firmware released in 2021 version 2.0 there is no software from Sony needed for streaming. April 2021 was version 2.01 I know it has been a very long time since you 2 have used the Sony ZV1, just so viewers know this Sony software video streaming requirement has been done away with 2 years ago.

Was just about to get the ZV1 Mark1, then this dropped today. So now I have decisions to make.

I am actually relieved this isn’t a major upgrade, as I just bought a ZV1 at the end of last year. I was imagining some massive upgrade. This isn’t that. To be honest, I’d rather have a faster lens than a wider one. The F4 is a weird compromise but I get it for size. They had to trade speed for focal length. I use my ZV1 for capturing family (like a camcorder) and for KZfaq stuff (usually on a tripod), and I rarely vlog selfie style, so I’m good for now. Still, this is a great camera if you don’t already have a ZV1. The touch screen is really a nice feature that I wish the ZV1 had.

Here is an interesting comparison. The New ZV-1 II with 18-50 mm (FF equivalent) lens has been priced at 900$. But if you look at Nikon, they have a Z-30 body which is priced at 600 currently. And a 12-28 mm (18-42 mm FF eq.) lens priced at 350! The whole setup will cost around 950! The lens has 4.5 stops of optical IS which sony one doesn’t. It has better battery. You can interchange lenses when you need. And because it's an apsc, the image quality will be better & better low light performance. If I have the budget around 900, I think it's better to go with the nikon.

Interesting format. The way i see it is that the zv1 with the Ulanzi 18mm is still my preferred choice. I'll wait until the M2 has had a few firmware upgrades.

The internal mic sounds strange in your test 3:03. It's like a low-pass filter was enabled or finger covered the camera mic. I think you guys received a bad demo unit.

The bugs are the star in this one… the touch screen new menu is the best thing. Not going to upgrade though

I wish they provided a firmware update for the original ZV-1, which I love as a general purpose cam for taking photos. It would be great as a street cam with two additions: 1. Set shutter speed in S-mode to be minimum shutter speed, so it can go higher if needed. 2. In photo mode, use the big red button to toggle between P and S. (or whatever modes one likes to have quick access to)

You should compare to other camera manufacturers. Like does Canon, Nikon, OM, Lumix do something sub 1K?

Just wondering why every channel has a a video of another dreadful sony/canon product upon release whereas up to now I can barely find a review of the new Fuji Xs20 which at least seems to have some incremental improvements? (and I am still stuck w/ Canon ApSC until now, so not a fujista 😉) - Is there a special reason (e.g. Fujifilm policy or sth like that)?
