Good day. Very great simple explanation. However, you said one should ‘turn on your lights and set it to half power’. Should that be continuous light? Or should I fire off the flash? Thanks

Perfect explanation. When you said turn on your lights and set it to half power, does that have to be a continuous light? I have a speed light and am wondering how it works in that situation.

The best way is pretty simple - a flash meter and trigger. Then dial in setting on camera.

Instead of using a higher f stop, isnt it possible to just increase shutter speed to maintain f8, or is there some magic going on with setting a shutter sped of 1/160? Just curious. Thanks

Some flash systems either struggle with synchronization or cannot sync at all with shutter speeds faster than 1/200” and because he’s giving tips for use with any system he’s keeping the shutter speed within a synchronizable range for any light system. You can look for flashes with what’s caked “High Speed Sync” and they’ll be able to fire with the faster shutter speeds

With your settings, will the model be viewable from the live view monitor or just from the eye viewer

Yes but you must turn off exposure simulation.

Having moved from a DSLR to a sony mirrorless I'm finding it very hard to see my subjects right before I focus off flash between auto focus and framing. Im used to seeing what i see in my viewfinder not the camera. Shooting multiple fast passed portraits lately and finding the dark viewfinder very frustrating for framing. Any tips on settings

Hello Shane, I was having the same problem, but now sorted. My camera is the a7r iv. In the menu camera 2 page 8/11 there is a Live View Display. I set it to off for studio flash work and problem sorted. If your camera is not the a7r iv there should be a Live View Display anyway. Hope it works

@@josephmasana7403 Great answer. I could add: If you shoot with studio flash, assign a custom button to allow you to quickly turn on and off the live view display. This saves tons of time searching through the menu.
