he may have been capable of winning a calendar year grand slam, but what wimbledon canceled the tourny? australia threatened to arrest him? and they kicked him out at us open where the tournament umpire showed a total lack of discernment and judgment, it was slow to mid range moving tennis ball at worst. people get hit all the time with balls going much faster like with a serve or powerful ground stroke gone awry. I've seen way worse things that were done intentionally that didn't result in any serious disciplinary action. it was clearly a witch hunt against Novak, mainly because he messed up their Federer / Nadal fairy tale legacies. they also resent having players from former eastern block nations winning anything, because prior to fed/nadal/djokovic era, all the big winners tended to be from western nations. the more wealthy western nations resent that BIG TIME. but they're just childish and ultimately come out looking pretty weak for their churlish and petulant behavior.@@imalwaysright

In my eyes biggest factor of Novak´s decline right now is that he seems to run out of gas extremely fast. He seems to be short of breath even after medium long rallys. And this reason my have led to a rather devastating stat seen versus Nardi: Novak one only 5 out of 20 rallys 9 shots or more. That´s unseen and unheard of for Novak Djokovic.

I think there's a intimitation factor too. Most of the players born in the 90's have lost multiple times against Nole (and Rafa) so when they have to face him on the big stage they rarely play their best (some of them even look defeated from the beginning of the match). Alcaraz and Sinner doesn't have that (even if Sinner lost a lot of times against Nole some of them on GS). There are no years and years of heavy loses so they feel they can win. An of course age is not only a number. Nole is getting older so this kind of lose will become more usual on an off day (Federer was on the verge of losing against a guy who was not even top 500 and he was very competitive back then, so everybody has bad days)
@Funkytrip73
@Funkytrip73 3 ай бұрын
That doesn't really seem a factor. While they may not have lost to them, when they started playing tennis, Djoko was their hero and already kinda the goat. If you play against such a legend, you're in awe. Period. It is why lately a good amount of players win a set against Djoko, go OMGOMGICANWINAGAINSTTHEGOAT in their minds and choke up. And then it's attributed to Djoko's mental power that he prevailed. I don't think so. I think just like Fed and Nadal, there comes a moment their opponents are just not in awe anymore, they lose that mental advantage and they start losing randomly in earlier rounds because their opponents keep focus the entire match.

Fed, Nadal, every other player on the tour loses yet they don't make as much of a scene about it in press conferences like he does. They may have legitimate reasons for playing bad or simply having a bad day, but they don't whine about it when they lose. They also compliment the winning player too. Don't think I've ever seen Nole praise an opponent he just lost to. Or if he does, it's after he made his myriad of excuses. I would imagine that most players facing Djokovic go into the match with the mentality that they have nothing to lose; hence they are free to go for their shots. The fact that we are talking about a potential decline after 1 early tournament exit after making it to the semis of the AO just shows what an astronomical standard Nole has set. Personally I don't think Masters 1000 tournaments are make or break for a guy who has won so many that I've lost count. That being said idk if Novak will have the same 37+ career as Fed, since Fed was able to do it out of pure talent and did not need to rely on the physical side as much. Novak is such a smart player I’m sure he’ll find ways to win regardless as long as he’s motivated. It does feel like he’s becoming more vulnerable to power hitters when he’s unable to take initiative for the majority of the match. He’ll probably prove us all wrong and win another 4 slams regardless haha

Nardi was always aggressively hitting the short slow balls and taking over the rally. Against Sinner in the AO, it was tons of unforced errors, Sinner did not even break a sweat. I don't have access to groundstroke speed stats but his pace looks way off his standard Nole just needs to hear his two kids ask for a Roland Garros and Wimbledon trophies and he will be back.

Djokovic is close to retirement, there's no doubt about that - in best of 3 matches and his age he'll struggle even more than previous years in grinding against players like Sinner, Alcaraz, Medvedev, Rune or younger players. Both Sinner and Alcaraz beat him in best of 5 slam matches in the last 12 months. In my assessment he's only an injury away from fading away like Nadal and Federer. He knows that physically his level is declining, and the younger generation players they will keep getting better. The margins get closer and it'll be harder for him. His situation now is probably similar to Federer back in 2019. Everyone will know he is done when he doesn't reach Quarter or Semi Finals of slams.

He's already got the slam and most other records, objectively he is the greatest ever, there's not much else to chase, except maybe the Olympics, and I highly doubt he'll be around in 2028. He no doubt wants to spend more time with family/other things. Going for the calendar slam will just be too hard at this stage too. Can't blame him if he does want to bow out while at the top too.

he's been there and done it all. the up and comers aren't really his rivals, they're just starting and he's closer to the end of his career. he needs a sabbatical and then one more full year on tour. try to get that olympic gold. anytime people are not in the habit of winning, it's hard to just flip a switch and win a major title, that said he should play all 4 majors and then take some time off, come back after a long break to compete at french, wimbledon and us open. he should skip the australian bc of how they treated him. if other players had any backbone they should skip it too in solidarity with Novak. and all that said even at his age, best of 5 favors him because he conditioning is probably the best on the tour. in a best of 3 you can blink and find yourself down a set and a break in the 2nd, and it's quickly all over. Federer's overall record against novak, rafael and andy looks a whole lot better than his record vs those guys at major best of 5 matches.

Sounds like wishful thinking -- at least for one type of fan. Staying 3 months beyond winning the ATP finals (and 6 other major titles, 3 of the year's slams + a final -- in short, one of the best seasons of any individual player in history) doesn't quiiite seem like an extreme case of pointlessly hanging around long after all hope is gone.

@@RichardABradley-ze9qn Yes, 2023 was a fabulous year for the GOAT. However, 2023 is now in the rear view mirror. It always begins the same way. You make news losing is the first sign. Withdrawal from tournaments to lick your wounds follows. Then come flashes of brilliance, but you still lose. Suddenly, the younger opponents are no longer is awe of you….

Everybody has off days but when you're over 30 all the pundits want to come out and say you're done and over the hill. By this time you would have thought that since the big three showed time and time again how off this trope they would be reluctant to pull it out, yet it never ends. Yes, father time comes for us all but it's time to stop writing someone off anytime they have a slump.

He might be losing motivation. Most of his competitors from his generation either retired, or towards that point. Federer is gone and Nadal and Murray pretty much on their last leg. He'll be the only one left from his generation in probably 2 years. And he has a few in the top 10 that can possibly take him in a slam.

For me, I think, Novak must be missing the two Big Ones - Federer and Nadal! He is very good when he is fighting with these two!!! Now he thinks he can just relax with these young guys, that is why he lost! Anyway, Novak does not have to prove anything - he is the GOAT!!! Maybe he can also just retire with Nadal, and enjoy life with his family.

He will miss people like you coming up with excuses. He isn't winning ATM. That's all. Soon maybe he won't be winning any more gs. Then it's over and then sinner and co are the gods of the sport . That's how tennis works. Driven by perception and reward. Novak had his moment. Time to exchange the power and live on 200 million plus 😅

1. Father Time stops for no man. 2.He has a wife and two children at home. They are at the age were they want him around. That's were his mind is, even when he is on court. 3. The things that get you pumped up, motivated or even angry when you are younger will fade as you age, and have less impact. 4. And yes, the younger players aren't scared.

Something nobody is talking about is demographics. The 90s was a much smaller generation than those born in the early ‘naughties’ (gen X tended to have children much later in life than their boomer parents) and also came up while the big 3 were ALL still a factor in tournaments. So pure statistics says that you are more likely to see more young players with not only the talent, but the opportunity to take down the greats, they are a larger pool of talent and only facing one of the big 3 during the twilight of his career! Demographics is destiny is a cliche in economics that I think soundly applies here. The millennials aren’t ’mentally weak’, they just were born and trained during perhaps the worst period in recent tennis history to experience your prime, Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Wawrinka (edit: Murray!, sorry mate!) etc were all still young enough to be playing at their best!

At that moment in time Federer had the equivalent age Djokovic will have at Roland Garros in 2025 and yet he managed to play six (long) sets (no final set tiebreak) against a fit and healthy Djokovic of 33y...I suspect Djokovic will be retired by that time (2025) at the same age, but even if he keeps on playing: he won't be even near the final at Roland Garros next year (2025). By that time his ranking has dropped (this year he won't get as many points as 2023 by definition already), he thus faces thougher opponents early on and Alcaraz, Sinner will be even be more mature (better) than they are now. If he would face Alcaraz at RG in 2025 it will be a sound defeat in three sets. In fact, I think he can't touch him at this years French Open, but of course that is to be seen.
