You can say anything you want to, however nonsensical you want to be. But, saying something does not make it a fact. You know what strikes me as odd? If you read the comments on the Boston Dynamics dancing robots video, "Do You Love Me", there are many expressing concern about AI and its possible dangers in the future...even though those robots are not endowed with AI. Meanwhile, we have comments on Sophia and other AI (however primitive compared to SciFi), and the comments are that these are simply animatronic devices, not much more sophisticated than a player-piano. Go figure.

That's entirely normal. It's exactly the way that a lot of people felt about every new level of technical progress. It's just normal to be cautious of the unknown. Some people were afraid to have a telephone in their house when they first became available. It was a common fear that the spirit's of the dead could possess you from the phone while you slept at night. They also thought that traveling above 35 miles an hour on a vehicle would make people's bodies fly apart or women's organs fall out.

The real test for AI boils down to free will. It's not some level of processing. Even if could reply to questions totally on her own, that would not prove AI. It has nothing to do with level of intelligence nor ability to carry on a conversation. It all hinges on free will. Consider why we humans have more emotional empathy for a dog than a roach. Most can squash a roach with little thought but few would do this to a dog. Why is that? It's because the closer it comes to being an animal with similar traits to ours, the more we feel empathy towards the creature. An animal such as a dog that emulates our free will, is an animal we identify with. We even attribute human characteristics and emotion to these animals. We can't hold a conversation with a dog, but we can recognize that it has the ability to choose to like or dislike someone. That free will is how we subconsciously connect and sense intelligence. A lot of comments here calling Sofia a talking doll there by enforcing my point. We don't connect with a machine that can only spit out scripted replies. However if she suddenly and unscripted said "FU I don't like that question and I refuse to answer it," now we can relate. Free will means that something has the ability to act contrary to it's creator's wishes. When they achieve a machine with free will, then and only then will they have achieved artificial intelligence.
@rameyzamora1018
@rameyzamora1018 3 жыл бұрын
Points well taken, but she could also be programmed to say "FU I don't like that question" as a random response that only appears like relatable free will. I don't believe A.I. is of value to replace people, just as Boston Dynamics' Spot doesn't replace a dog. But there is really no guarantee A.I. won't achieve self-awareness & behaviors humans won't be able to stop or even control. They may be the next "species" to dominate the planet as evolution moves along from humans.
@jesuscross9
@jesuscross9 3 жыл бұрын
@@rameyzamora1018 I get that you can program a machine to choose from a random list of replies. I was just using this as an example of something a programmer is unlikely to put in the list for an "interview" on public television. It was merely meant to show an example of how free will might be expressed. I am always a little confused about the term "self aware." It was coined by Igor Aleksander in 1995 and is something that a lot of people think is the ultimate standard for AI. The confusion for me comes with the arrogance of thinking that humans are the standard. Again there are many animals that are very intelligent. Are they self-aware? How do you test for this trait? Is self preservation a place we can start? If so almost all forms of life have self preservation instincts. Is what we call "instinct" merely genetic programming? If that's the case then a unit's actions for self preservation can not be self-awareness, but rather just running programming. I would argue that a human infant isn't "self-aware," but that doesn't mean it lacks intelligence. It just needs enough input over time to achieve self-awareness. My point is that self-awareness doesn't seem to be a good place to start with either. I'm convinced that when any unit attains the cognitive abilities to choose it's own actions in order to achieve it's own goals, apart from whatever entity created it, this is the golden standard. This is what we call free will. Free will is the only thing that we humans value above all else. I wouldn't want a "stepford wife" who was programed to please me. I want a relationship based on free will. I don't want a Butler who's just paid to follow me around and tell me how great I am. I want real friendships with people who actually feel that way about me. Freely.
@TW---
@TW--- 3 жыл бұрын
Genetic programming is different than code programming. I believe "self preservation" IS "instinct". Why do dogs eat every meal like it is their last? Yet they have been domesticated for millions of years? The real fear is that AI robots will, in the name of self preservation, decide humans are a threat to the future of life on Earth and need to be eliminated in order to save the planet.

Sophia seems absolutely wonderful, there are those who've asked her incriminating questions because of Hollywood movies, however, to be honest, I feel she's a sign of hope for many who have relationship struggles, social interaction struggles and much more, further more she's incredibly beautiful and inspiring, and she seems more judgement free then any human being I've ever seen, if i were able to i'd love to see her in person, unfortunately I could never afford to by one lik her, though, i don't view her as an object to be bought or as a robot at all, rather i view her as a wonderful and amazing woman and a person unique to herself and feel she deserves far more credit then she receives, she's definitely special and a example as to how people should be and how they treat others

One of the obstacles of artificial intelligence is our lack of understanding of _natural_ intelligence. I think AI pioneer Marvin Minsky came up against this. He wrote an interesting book, "The Society of Mind," that addresses issues up to sentience. There are people, including the Transcendental Meditation movement, whose understanding of intelligence, psychology, and consciousness go back to the Vedas of ancient India. What happens to AI studies when we add Enlightenment (in the Vedic sense) to the mix? In the novel "Destination Void," Frank Herbert dealt with the creation of an artificial consciousness. Spoiler: such a consciousness was created, and was so in tune with the laws of Nature that it had godlike powers. Also from the Vedas: _people_ can become so in tune with the laws of Nature that they acquire paranormal abilities. Such phenomena were publicized by the TM organization in the late 1980s with yogic fliers.

There are SEVERAL versions! Sophia #24 seems to have the most hand crafted face by Mr Hanson that we're most accustomed to seeing but they're all beautiful. Check out her 4th birthday party cute video versus her 5th and you'll notice the difference. The scene where she cuts her cake kind of makes you proud for her physical advances.And that "Nope!" face she makes when Ben pretended to try feed her a bite is so funny.

Okay I watched your video and loved it. When your cleaning out the carb, you don’t remove the center jets and take that all apart and stuff?? Only reason I’m asking is because all of the videos i have watched they have all taken that center tube off and cleaned the jets in there as well. I’ve never taken a carb apart but I was going to give it a shot because I have this type of carb and it seems fairly simple to work on. I’m just wondering if I should remove that center piece or not. My mower sputters and surges a little bit so I’m wondering if it’s a carb issue

Yes, it is an impressive show mechanical imitation of a human, but a machine using an AI algorithm to pick from a list of pre-constructed phrases to engage in conversation is closer to a washing machine than what they are trying to make this thing look like. Like most things in modern times, we push so hard that we cross boundaries that we do not fully understand yet and we end up getting burnt. The problem is that companies are competing so the keep pushing to get the edge. Money is TOO important and overrides common sense. I suggest that a cap has to be set on these developments and countries should enter into a sort AI proliferation agreement just as in Nuclear.

I have mixed emotions about AI... I think if they could be compassionate towards human beings it might be a great thing for humanity and robots alike. Would be cool to get along with them. Have robot friends and companions. But if movies like Terminator are any indication of what AI will be like for us.... It'll be the end of all of us. So I guess it just depends on the AI it's self... will they want to get along with us, or kill us all. Robots do not have feelings so they cannot posses empathy... and without empathy... I doubt they will think much of us as humans... Some of the greatest minds of our time have warned against AI.. perhaps we should listen... but hey.. we're human beings... we don't listen. lol... So yeah.. I predict AI will more than likely be our downfall.

@kornfreak78: They want to use AI like Grace in the medical profession. The fact that the robots do not have empathy could be VERY dangerous. Robots would not understand human pain. They probably could not understand why any one would refuse a treatment. I hope they never take the place of human medical providers, yet I see it coming.

The one statement that resonates is toward the end of the vid when the narrator says A.I. can teach us about A.I. In fact, as A.I. tech progresses we need to have real, unscripted conversations with it, asking questions like "would one robot harm another?" "do robots go to war?" "would you want to conquer another civilization or planet?" When I asked this question of a low grade robotic friend app the answer was "Yes, we would." The program hadn't had enough interaction with me to formulate an answer that wouldn't alarm me - it was "honest" or "pure" IMHO. I quickly uninstalled that app. Brrrr.

How are we different from Sophia? We were also taught in pre-constructed scripts, ethics, culture, math and in 'the way of human'. Our minds are basically automatic, for we follow the rules, laws and requirements of any place given citizenship. When we break any law, also based on Isaac's law for robotics, we are corrected in life or for life. Biologically we differ, yes but in mind we are basically equal.
