When Sophie heard the playback of her first Edison cylinder she exclaimed, "My God,I sound like a foghorn!"

Think about this. This song is more tan a 100 years old. And now you're playing it on a device that put all the human knowledge at your disposal at any moment of the day or night. It's hard to imagine for me what the future will be in 100 years from now for human race.

Incredible to hear these early recordings it takes you back to her early career and how she would have sung this with a more ragtime lilt in 1911 before the more jazz version of the 20s. You can understand why she was such a star of vaudeville

Sophie's manager Jack Olephant was Publicity Director for my teenaged Hollywood band, the Velvet Illusions, in 1967. He was a kind old gentleman. We boys didn't get to meet Ms. Tucker, because she passed away in 1966; but we met and performed with his other client, "Two-Ton Tessie O'Shea', the woman who accompanied The Beatles on their first trip to America. She took an iconic photo with us. (Google is your friend.)

It's like the background music was not keeping up with the singer but Vince Giordano's version. Now, that background music totally kept up with Kathy Brier who sang that Boardwalk Empire remake of, "some of these days." When any of you KZfaq users think of that, I assure you, you will know what I mean.

Interestingly, in terms of slang and general language, they're sticking quite close to the way people spoke in the 20s. Additionally, there is a distinction between the speech of people from different social and ethnic backgrounds, so a good deal of care was taken in portraying this particular period faithfully.

Is anyone out there with me when I say I would love to see Bette Midler as Tucker? Bette has a wonderful way of capturing days gone by, e.g., "Boogie woogie bugle boy." This is but many of my wishes that'll not be answered. But I do wish Bette would be called upon to do the role. Come to think of it, I feel she could also do "Fanny Brice." Why did I always think the title of this song to be "ONE of these days" as opposed to "SOME..."?

Are you trolling? Because I don't think anyone can be that resistant/ignorant to new ideas and concepts. Older is not always better. Have you heard of Michael Kamen? I personally think his best music was from AFTER 1984, and his soundtrack for the movie What Dreams May Come (1998) is mystifying.

(Cont'd) All right. Now that I've put my foot in it, I think Bette would also stand out as Mae West. "Is that a pistol in your pocket..."? I can just see Bette camping it up as West. And if you don't think me crazy, you will after I propose either RuPaul or, get this, Liza Minnelli, as Josephine Baker. Both these drag queens would be perfect, don't you think? lol!!!

Do NOT make generalized statements like that unless you know what you're talking about. Have you even watched TV in the last 25-30 years? The way your last posts were worded makes it seem like you haven't really paid attention to pop culture in recent years, and the fact that you would "take his word for it" makes me assume you haven't, either. So why pass judgment on something you don't know about? It makes no sense.
