As a retired lawyer who practiced international divorce I can tell you that the US and the UK are members of the Hague Treaty concerning child custody and abduction. The court that has jurisdiction over the children is in the place where the children are habitually resident. Therefore, if the couple declared their residence in the UK then the UK courts have jurisdiction no matter what a FL court says. The problem here is that most courts dealing with custody don't have any idea what the treaty requires. It was reported that Sophie has the children and Jonas won't turn over their passports.

This is probably why Sophie was so quiet at first. She didn't wanna seem like the unhinged one when she fought for custody

what is interesting is that no one considers what kind of individual would set up a smear campaign against their former partner. no one considered what kind of individual would blindside the other partner on their breakup on the public stage. So lemme get this straight... Joe and Sophie were looking for a house in the UK. They'd been living there and renting a home for months and had a realtor. There effectively resided in the UK. Joe offers to take the kids with him while she's filming (false pretenses), then makes a bee-line for Florida (which just happens to have passed brand new divorce legislation), files surprise divorce papers over a holiday weekend (and the court documents do show that she wasn't served with the papers until after it had made the news), and had a judge declare that the kids can't leave the state DESPITE the fact that they were living in the UK. He refuses to hand over the passports. She can't take them to the home that they've known for several months now. His team then starts a smear campaign while he's taking publicity shots with the kids in a known pap photo location. I'll also mention that Joe has a history of messy breakups... The infamous Ring camera footage hasn't been released. He hasn't even specified what was supposedly on that footage. This, quite frankly, was obviously calculated and has Kelly Rutherford 2.0 written all over it.

This really sucks because I loved the sisterhood between the Jonas wives... I didn't like the smear campaign against Sophie because it was only Joe's version. And we didn't hear her version until she filed court papers about a week later.

I'm dear divorcing parents, If you say negative stuff about the other parent to your kids or they find out you did, it will destroy YOUR relationship with them when they grow up and figure out it was wrong and hurt them.

The children are the number 1 priority! I had the benefit of parents with an exceptional, loving and happy relationship. I was not so lucky when I married, and it was very clear when my children were quite young. 1 and 3 years old. I was devastated my kids wouldn't have the same loving relationship to grow up with. Though there was much animosity between my husband and myself, we put it aside for the sake of our babies. We promised each other to save our complaints to share with our friends and never our kids. We were both good about keeping that promise. We divorced while the kids were still tiny so they don't remember us ever being together. I often wonder how we pulled it off as we were quite young. (Early 20's) But we did it! And our families,to their credit, went along with our wishes. We avoided so much angst to the benefit of our kids. Children should never be put in the position of choosing sides or being pawns. Choose a healthy atmosphere for your little ones as much as possible. ❤ They will thank you for it.

I know that generally one parent cannot take a child out of the US if the other parent does not consent if both parents share custody of the child. I am not sure how it works if the child in question has dual citizenship and they are being brought to the other country where they are a citizen of. So, even if he didn't withhold the passports and gave the passports to her, would she be able to take their daughters out of the country if he didn't consent to the actual leaving the country?

The abduction bit is a legal term, it doesnt have to mean you are kidknapping and holding them hostage... it could mean that the chikdren are not currently where they had been agreed to live/had been living. So trying to say that calling it abduction is "overstepping" is just trying to make Sophie look bad, when technically that is what is happening according to Law.
