Since many years one of the best organists around. She would deserve to be much better known

Unequalled power, brilliance, and musicianship. Mme. Sophie continues the glorious tradition of Jeanne Demessieux, Marie-Madeleine Duruflé, Marie-Claire Alain, and so many other "grandes dames" of the French organ school.

When I first stumbled accross Cauchefer-Choplin I thought I'd finally found the equal of Marie Clair Alian. After this performance I've placed her above every other organist I've encountered. Truly one of the great musicians.

Mr. Leach: Many among my generation, including yours truly, have heard the great and peerless master M. Dupre, preeminent among organists in the 20th Century, because he concertized widely and lived 85 years, dying in 1971. A very thoughtful and nuanced performance such as Mme. Cauchefer-Choplin's reading of the Finale from Symphonie-Passion, may exceed the artistic intentions of the composer and provide greater illumination of the composition. I've seen, or rather heard, it many times.

Dupre was not organist for an English Cathedral. He was organist at St. Sulpice which is a Catholic Church in Paris, France. The Symphonie-Passion was originally conceived as an improvisation on The Grand Court Organ in Philadelphia during a concert. Dupre later put the improvisation on paper and used it for the dedicatory recital of the organ at London's Westminster Cathedral, Catholic (not to be confused with Westminster Abbey, Anglican).

Merci Madame!

Beautiful! Mme Cauchefer-Choplin is enfolded in a kind of reverie indicating her profound understanding of M Dupre's miracle of lyricism which materializes from unceasingly restless chromaticism forming, so to speak, garlands to decorate the plain chant melody " Adoro te Devote."

Each key depression is quite a mechanical process with this organ. Thankfully Aristide Cavaillé-Coll developed a pneumatic air assist system that allows each key depression to be rather painless. If it did not have that assist system, then each depression would take considerable pressure from the performer because you are connected via copper rods to wind boxes. So you depress a key on this organ and air rushes in to raise the rear mechanics like a pneumatic lift system. Aristide Cavaillé-Coll did make one flaw on the organ when it was first installed. You see her using couplers to activate keys on multiple manuals. This is a loud clicking process. Originally Aristide Cavaillé-Coll used round shaped coupler devices. It was really loud. On later revisions and upgrades, he changed them to diamond shape. That reduced the clicking sound but on a quiet song and with all of the manual couplers activated, you still hear the clicking sound quite well. The program I am talking about was produced by the BBC. I have yet to fid it again.

What a charming women! Of course the organ sound is never the real thing on records..but when you walk around in the church it sounds great! It is evident that although we can place the best microphones etc..it will never be as beautifull as the sound every pipe can make. You must have been there to give any comment in what kind. Great to find this movies here!

Thank God for someone who plays this movement at the correct tempo. It is in 4/4, not cut time. She understands time signatures and tempo indications. The composer indicates allegro moderato, not molto. But why did she get much faster at it goes on? It doesn't say to get faster. I guess I spoke to soon.

Sorry for any misunderstanding: all I said was that that the last time I heard this was in an English cathedral (Gloucester, as it happens). As for S Sulpice, I have fond memories of High Mass there in November 1994, when Roth played the second of the Op7s... Wonderful. (Added to this was some Grunenwald, and the inevitable (and glorious) improvisation...) Regards, Paul

@pianoman74 I don't know the piece you're talking about but I agree with you about this organ sounding like a synth at times. I think great organs often sound NOT like organs, but other instruments or even never before heard instruments.

Starting at 6:31 I would love to be inside the organ to see all the amazing things the action is doing to translate the motion of the keys to the pallets in this enormous instrument. The demands on the mechanism are incredible, with so many valves needing to pop open so quickly. But then, this is an incredible organ...

Quelle musique !

@codeman2008 Actually, Mr. Codeman, I thought the very same thing that Mr Pianoman74 said. It DOES sound like a becrazed synth at times, but that's what's so fascinating. Organs often generate a lot of tonal memories in people's minds and ears. I don't think he's on crack at all.

Heh this is scary. 2:04 doesn't sound like an organ, but like a SYNTHESIZER :) Especially I mean those used back in the 1970s by Jean-Michel Jarre in his "Oxygène" cycle. But maybe I'm just on crack :)
