Hello guys… and a few girls… :) I finally have a spot welder; a powerful one.
Today I will show you in great detail how I made this nice spot welder. It works great, I really like it. The spot welder kit I’m using is very good.
A big THANK YOU to all my patrons, especially to: Max Rice, Jacek, techge, Anthony Ortenzi, John.

Great video Sorin, with that size box you could use a small solenoid between the spot weld PCB and leads which could break the circuit at the same time as the 2 x H7 bulbs you used.

I think they left those two components for the user to solder because they are trough hole components that can't be soldered automatically, and thus are more expensive to ship all assembled.

They do it to avoid damage. These passives are relatively heavy and the packaging usually sucks. Vibration or rough handling during transport can damage the components or solder joints. Their safest bet to avoid complaints is shipping these parts separately.

the 90-120 amps required by the spot welder is for micro seconds so its okay the given components can handel this job but if you are building very big battery bank then you might need to take a little break to cool down the cables. for 11$ it is good looking

Nice. They used a machine to install all the SMT parts and reflow soldered the board in an oven, the through-hole parts have to be manually installed for more time and money, and it’s much easier to do, just time consuming, so they leave it to the user.

A colleague of mine has a similar kit which he uses quite often for spot welding DIY battery packs. He's now thinking about making a spot welder from a microwave transformer because he might change the battery as its performance dropped significantly within two years. Maybe you could sometime make a spot welder from a microwave transformer?
@minkorrh
@minkorrh 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe he should just buy another battery. That's not too expensive considering it lasted for 2 years. They don't last forever. I regularly change out the batteries for my miniquads, and thats like 15, 4S batteries.
@MitsuZer0G
@MitsuZer0G 2 жыл бұрын
@@minkorrh That's the point. He doesn't want to buy a new battery every two years. If you have a transformer operated spot welder, it will basically last forever, if constructed well.

Nice Project. the only mods i would make are a set of heatsinks on the mosfets and a fan to keep them cool thus extending their life and a cut off switch on the lid so it cuts power if opened thus to prevent any small conductive materials from falling in when open and being missed the one device you dont want to let out the magic smoke. ... or a shock yourself when disconecting the battery pack

The mosfets don't seem to have any driver circuits, so they will spend a lot of time in half-open/half-closed state and high-resistance.

Components are through hole, its cheaper to not solder them on and just ship them with the package. Through hole components need a solderbatch to do large batches wich is extra cost for the manufacturer.

I like this video, and find the humor refreshing, thanks. For future reference... as you've mentioned in the video itself, the welder is not "home made", only a kit with a battery. Although click bait titles are sometimes essential to attract viewers, in this case the truth would have been better (imho), i.e. something like "very powerful spot welder kit" instead of stating "home made" in the title just to reveal the truth in the video itself. Keep up the good work.

I highly recommend that you don't get this kind of spot welder. I have one and another one of the same and it is not reliable. If you're spending money on a battery pack for an electric bike or same invest in something that's better and more reliable to protect your investment in the battery pack. This inexpensive welder produce joints that are not consistent and sometimes the strip comes off just by looking at it......

They let you solder the last components yourself because they are through hole components. If they have to let it solder in the factory, it is an additional step that comes with high cost compared to SMT assembly.

3:00 The components are not soldered because a) they're through-hole, so that would be a completely different process to the SMT components already installed, and b) they are the only components that most hobbyists are able to solder reliably anyway. Also, the ratings on the lugs and connectors are for prolonged use. No problem to send 10x the current, if it's only going to be for tenth of a second. The problem here is rather the current being way to low for proper spot-welding. Industrial spot welders do the welding in less than a hundredths of a second, and use capacitors for that reason. Batteries just have too high of an internal resistance.

Interesting how he liked only the comments that stroke his ego, constructive criticism seems to bother him. Also I was wondering why go through a hassle to build this when we have more refined products to buy for as low as 20 euro? I like to build stuff but it's usually when I cannot buy the thing I need or I need to improv. Good comment btw.

The board is remarably cheap, i saw it for more than 100 USD but probably with better parts. 90 - 150 Amps is very low for spot welding, its even very low for 0.1mm nickel strips. It may work on the tiny 0.1mm strips, but if you need 0.15 or 0.2 or even 0.3 it won't work! The metal on the top of the 18650 cells is much thicker and it won't really stick well! I use a modified welding transformer with a special time control via NE555 that can deliver 3...4.5 V at up to 2000 Amps! That works perfect up to 1mm steel! But it can't do 1.5mm steel - too weak already! Real stop welding starts at around 500 Amps! When you use a good car battery (which they claim can be used) i am quite sure you will detroy the board and the Mosfets when you use thick low resistance cables! I use 35mm2 and even 90mm2 copper cables for my heavy welds!
