Sorolla had taken the world by storm with his 1909 NYC exhibit. It was the first time such a huge number of his works were shown and to great delight by visitors. He was seen as a painter that could capture sunlight in paint and remain a force for Naturalism with his new art form. Spanish subjects were part of that great lineage from Velasquez.
