Just kidding, No Ragrets. These are the pedals I like having nearby, and a little bit of the how/why I use them. Also, because I never really spelled it out, I mostly play 90's Alt Rock, but I'm involved in another project that's doing 90's Alt Rock-inspired Originals because sometimes you just gotta live in the moment.

Here's my board. As a senior on a fixed income, I don't go for pricey things and aim for the cheapest route to the sounds I want, including DIY pedals. Bottom row, R to L: Homemade wah, clone of my favorite compressor-the Univox Unicomp (not transparent - it's an *effect* ), double pedal of my own design with The Crank booster and Wattbreaker drive (variant of the Bluebreaker with more heft and double clipping, Toggle with arrows flips the order. Schematics for both available on-line.), DIY Foxx Tone Machine, MXR 6-Band. Middle row: clone of MXR Envelope Filter with multiple mods, clone of Phase 90 with multiple mods (including variable offset and envelope control of Rate), Top row, R to L: Tonecore Roto-Machine (great pedal, and like all rotary simulators *better* in stereo), Behringer clone of DC-2 (great pedal...if you can find one), Donner multi-modulation pedal, Muza delay/reverb (lotsa power in a small inexpensive package, including 4 storable presets). The whole thing sits on a 12" x 12" wooden tile from the Dollar Store, and is powered by a regulated 8 x 9V@100ma supply I built. Total expenditure

A real working man's board there. Nothing to be apologetic for. Matching cables? What?! This isn't a "fashion show" it's about getting the job done. Reminds me a lot of my pedal board- Non-matching cables, pedals in weird positions, and I even have one at an angle from the rest so the foot switch sticks out in a more convenient way. Whatever works man! I'm with ya 100%. Rock on.

The Drop is so useful. It does feel weird since you hear the strings at their actual tuning in the room, but I notice it a lot less when I’m using distortion or octave fuzz. Yay for not caring if people think your board is not cool enough for them. Ours are almost totally different, but I feel this. I am old, tired, and am no longer bothered by hot takes on these things. You don’t have to use it, it’s fine. 😆

The first time I saw someone show up with a Drop on their board, I thought I'd be in for a glitchy mess. Glad to be proven very wrong. It's proven to be very very practical. And yeah, I've played gigs where people come up and compliment me on my gear, and I've had gigs where people enjoyed the music. I much prefer the latter.

I like how your board is a lot like mine, nothing really fancy or flashy (people would freak out if they saw how my OneStop power supply brick is attached underneath lol i did it myself without the proper brackets) and we both have a CFH wah pedal. I never see anyone with those. Its the best wah I've ever used. You can really tweak it and get some interesting sounds. And you're right, those LED lights on the back help a lot to see if the pedal is still on or not lol. I used to have that problem all the time with other wah pedals. Oh and dont feel bad about your patch cables not matching and all that. On my board there are 4 different style of cables connecting everything lol. I dont play music to impress people with my pedal board haha

@StompboxBreakdown
@StompboxBreakdown Жыл бұрын
Ooh, a Rivera-era Fender Champ, that's a practical piece of history right there. I see Rivera amps as being one of the last stops in guitar amps before the prices really start to leave Earth's orbit and you're into diminishing returns on quality. No doubt there are some *amazing* boutiquey amps that will tickle your ears and loosen your socks, but you can find Clubsters, Chubsters, Supremas and an assortment of nice combo amps for under a grand with *that* sound and high-grade build quality, hand-assembled in the USA. As much as I love my Peavey Classic 30 combo amp, my amp tech warned me that in the time it takes him to just open it up and diagnose a problem, he could open up, diagnose, fix/replace, tune, and re-assemble one of my Riveras. That's becoming *increasingly* important. People are buying $1500 amps where the only viable repair is a complete board replacement, and that's only as long as there's enough spare parts left to buy.

Board looks great to me, if it gets the job done that’s the important part. I rarely play outside the house so my pedals are just on the floor, but it’s probably time to get a proper board. Thankfully, I’ve gotten to a place where I am very satisfied with the 9 or so pedals I own, so my board should be fairly sorted once I’m done building it. I think I’m gonna go with a holey board because I personally can’t stand velcro or dual lock on pedals.
@StompboxBreakdown
@StompboxBreakdown Жыл бұрын
Around the house, I rarely organize things into a board. I just lay it out on my desk or on top of the amp. There is something to be said for having all the wires tidied up, though. Those Holeyboards look neat, haven't seen them before.

That is a perfectly acceptable board - and don't let anyone say otherwise! For my preference I'd probably swap out a modulation for a verb but again that's MY preference. If I showed up to play somewhere and I was handed this board to use, I'd be pretty content and excited to use some toys I normally wouldn't use.

Most of the places I've played, a board larger than this starts to count against space I'd otherwise have to actually stand on stage. I've really come to rely on the Caroline Meteore reverb in my "just messing around" playing lately, I could definitely see a Reverb landing on there in the future, but we'll see. Thanks for watching, and for watching all the way to the end!!

I looked at one of those Fifty Five Twelve’s and a Nomad, from Mesa Boogie, when I was looking for a better amp for gigging. The guy was selling it for $800, but it ended up being a bit heavy, and with the age of the amp, I just didn’t trust the guy, who was selling it. He had much crappier amps for sale, for almost as much money. In my experience, the unbelievably priced, used tube amp, that looks cosmetically fine, usually has a serious problem that either takes getting the amp really hot, or some other issue. The Nomad, which I found was was a great multichannel combo, that sell for half the price of the standard Mesa Boogie line. The guy called it the One Hundred-Fifty Five-Forty Five-Nomad. It had killer sound, with three channels, and a lead boost, that I thought could get me through a gig, if my pedalboard wasn’t an option, or a small board was the only other. Yet, it was far too big. It was a 4x10. If I had the space, I’d probably bought it for home/studio use, as it was priced at $700, and the guy told me he had people come look when he had it at $1000, then $900, and $800, but the 4x12 was always the dealbreaker. It did inadvertently lead me to the amp I eventually got, which is an Egnater Rebel 30, which just has more features, snd a line out, with its own Cab Sim and IR, that can go right into a board, and uses the actual power amp, instead of a modeler. Live, the direct sound, is the first amp I’ve found that sounds just as good direct as mic’d. I had found these amps, and others with similar direct outs, and setups, but the person was selling the 1x12 combo and a 1x12 extension cab, they had bought for it, for the same price most sold just the amp. I did some research, then made an offer, and ended up with the combo amp and a 1x12 cab, for $675 after shipping. The cabs alone, were selling for $200-250 used, so I thought it was a no brainer, after some searching. The guy selling it, just had so many amps, he was simply trying to make enough worth packing and shipping it. He talked with me several times, answering questions about the amp and the cab, even pulling it out and plugging it in, and asking what music I was playing, what my pedalboard looked like, and what my favorite gear is, like a local shop used to be like. He was cool, and he took my first offer, which was me offering to just buy the combo. He then basically threw in the extension cab for the shipping cost. Great guy. That was two years ago, and I gigged it last summer, through New Years Eve, with many practices, and a year and a half of random gigs and playing it nearly everyday. The tubes are probably due for a change, but the amp sounds killer. These amps are being slept on, because the Rebel Mark-2, is still selling for obverse a $1000 used, and a Head with a cabinet, will cost close to that used.
@StompboxBreakdown
@StompboxBreakdown Жыл бұрын
I had a Rebel 30 and really enjoyed it too! Sold it because I was in-between bands and was trying to reclaim some space in my house, so it went along with a 4x12 cabinet. You were probably right to steer clear of a suspicious deal when it comes to amps, though at least with the Riveras, amp techs seem to have no problem getting in there, finding service manuals, and replacing common parts.

That's a solid board, right there! Also, I too prefer to run straight into the front of my amp. But then, I only use the clean channel anyway. 😁 I'm surprised to see your tremolo before your drive section, as I always thought it sounded best as an end-of-chain effect. Although harmonic trem can sound kinda "univibey" to me, and I always put that before my drives, so maybe that's your thinking, too?
@StompboxBreakdown
@StompboxBreakdown Жыл бұрын
Thanks man!! I’ve always put the tremolo up front because it can push the overdrives harder at the peak, then go clean at the bottom. I use it for some Audioslave songs and it works well for those leads.

I got a ridiculously big board that requires a smaller satellite board for the real crazy stuff but really I could get by with a handful of pedals instead like a good overdrive and fuzz that stack together nicely a phaser,chorus with vibrato mode,delay with tap tempo and a good spring reverb on the amp and for my extra pedal I'd use my digitech expression factory it covers alot of stuff I don't use all the time and has a few good drives on it also

I would say the double barrel qualifies as boutique. I think of Wampler as a boutique brand too. The Wampler delay sounds great. And if you like how it sounds running everything in front, then more power to you. Miles said there are no mistakes in music. Would there even be shoegaze if somebody didn't like putting the reverb in the wrong place?

Nice one I think I'd be happy with that. any particular reason the drop goes before the wah? Is the drop buffered? I could see a fuzz face style thing opening up some grit and texture but you for lots of modulation goodness

It doesn't really show up with the half-step detune, but pitch-shifting the wah effect can start to sound weird. Better to shift the pitch as early as possible. If the board were a little bit larger, I'd definitely go for a dedicated reverb and/or a fuzz. Specifically, the Caroline Metèorè Reverb and the either the Shigaharu or Hawaiian Pizza fuzz.

I like tremolo before dirt because it can make the amount of clipping rise and fall along with the amplitude. I just think it makes it more interesting. As for the phaser, there’s two schools of thought on that, and I just like phaser earlier in the chain. I put the chorus after it, though. Actually, nothing here is even on my board anymore, lol. I should do an update at some point.
