To be honest I see both sides to a degree. I was curious about getting loc extensions myself. On one hand its definitely not anybody's right to come into someone else's face and insult/yell at them for things you personally dislike. Totally sucks that's happening to you girl, those people are way out of line. But, at the same time I wish you talked a little bit more about the subject itself. I don't think everyone who feels similar is part of one toxic group. I think the crux of the issue for these people is with those who portray a whole head of loc extensions as something they naturally grew. Considering the the importance the style still holds to a great many, it might be angering them to see others now coming to them and questioning "It's so beautiful, is all of it real?!" Because of the new and growing popularity of loc extensions. There's even people who take another person's previously cut locs and attach it to theirs. I guess, due to how deeply emotional and long the loc journey can be for many, it's easy for some to get triggered. Especially if it starts to get treated like another fad on instagram, and viewed as something as easy or "meaningless" as a sew-in. Maybe instead of "it isn't a journey", its important for people to accept and be upfront that it "isn't the _same_ journey", and just be willing to acknowledge how much patience the first takes? Idk if that's gatekeeping or not, it would be nice for locs to be a style truly for everyone, but I think some of those points do have some value. Never had locs, but I've been strongly considering them in recent times, and wanted to learn everything I could before my first appointment. Coming across this debate has been interesting for sure.😅

Thanks for your comment! I think your perspective is very fair and these are valid concerns. I don't believe everyone who shares the belief that "loc extensions aren't a journey" are apart of one toxic group, but I do feel a lot of the disdain is misdirected. I think we all can agree that questioning whether someone's hair is real or not is offensive regardless if its loc'd, loose, real, fake, etc. I feel as a community we can acknowledge the history of locs and its importance to many, while also recognizing its expansion in present times currently with the overall popularity of locs and loc extensions. I just dont believe it has to be an either/or thing. And as a community we can agree to disagree while still being respectful of other's spaces and decisions. There's enough space for everyone share their experience, and everyone's experience doesn't have to align. And just because our journey's may not align, it also doesn't devalue either of our experiences. There's also this overarching theme of "struggle" that I personally dont like. Many people who go the traditional route regularly associate their journey with struggle, and in return project their frustrations on people with loc extensions for having it "easy". And while the traditional route can be challenging (I experienced it), as a community we can't constantly complain about something being a struggle, and get mad at people for not wanting to experience that same struggle. I can't vouch for what people do/say in real life, however when it comes to social media, many of the people I see who share their experience with loc extensions are fully aware that its not the EXACT same journey as the traditional route. Many people who go the loc extensions route are very clear about why they made that decision, whether it be from impatience, lifestyle, health reasons, etc. However their overall end goal is to have head full of natural locs, and its their personal journey of getting there. Which is why I made the comment of it being the same destination, but a different route. I just feel like the constant nitpicking and insults towards loc extensions is unproductive. Im all for educating on the history and pros/cons of the different methods, but I'll never agree with shaming and policing what another black woman decides to do with her hair. Thanks again for commenting ♥️

Why is it anyone’s business what someone else decides to with or to their on hair? Let me also add, no matter how one gets their locs, they belong to the one wearing them, unless of course they had to take out a loan 😂🤣 then the locs are owned by the loaner (like a car, home, etc…) until the debt is paid in full, if you took out a loan for your locs, pay the loan off, 😂 you sure wouldn’t want a loc repossession 😅😂 … God bless, enjoy life!!!

As someone who started their locs with extensions and now have 100% natural locs, I completely agree. I didn't start my locs to gain patience or go on a spiritual journey and that doesn't make my experience less valid than someone who started with their own hair. It's okay to want the look and not want to go through the 5+ year journey to get mid back length hair. Not having that "patience" does not make anyone's experience less than!

Im glad you’re talking about this. I dont like when everybody makes it seem like every person that gets locs is now adopting some new lifestyle (spirituality, veganism, etc). We dont all have to be on the same journey, thats the reason its a journey. Its going to be different for everyone depending on what your goals are, and i think we need to respect each other’s different paths. And your locs are beautiful 😍

I agree. I personally am not on some spiritual journey with my locs. I got them because I’m in school and my loose natural hair took too much time away from other important things. I got instant locs and people have told me to my face I cheated. It’s the craziest thing ever that people are bothered about someone else’s hair. What difference does it make them?? I was advised to get instant locs because my loose natural hair was too loosely curled and it would take a long time to loc. Whether someone decides to get instant locs or extensions that’s their choice and it takes nothing away from someone who decided to go a different route. Folks need to learn what’s their business and what isn’t.

I personally think loc extensions are definitely a journey because you’re committing to an experience with your hair that has to be particularly maintained in order to be successful. It’s like when a lot of us stopped putting relaxers in our hair, some people did the big chop and started from scratch while others transitioned getting enough new growth to cut off their relaxed hair in stages. Some people are naturally mean and don’t know what it means to be a part of a community. We see this with almost anything that’s considered to be a lifestyle commitment like veganism or just being healthy for example. Definitely don’t pay naysayers any nevermind. I haven’t transitioned yet but I plan to with loc extensions for my own reasons. To me having locs is a major commitment because I’m that girl that always tried not to commit so much to a style and didn’t have a hard time deciding to cut my hair off at any time I felt like it. So keep going girl, you’re definitely an inspiration for a person like me! ❤

It’s crazy because I started my locs in 2020 when I had just cut my natural hair into a bob and had been getting silk presses forever and finally decided to get them because I realized I just wanted to be at peace with my hair but didn’t want to cut it all off. Taking care of my natural hair every day was taxing and I needed a style that would allow the minimal amount of work but the most amount of flexibility in styling as possible. Fast forward to 2023 and my locs grew in so nicely almost mid back for the first time in my life!! and then I decided to bleach them (too harsh for my already dyed hair, my stylist should have advised me otherwise) and my locs were damaged beyond repair. It was so embarrassing for me and I’m already going through so much in my life and I’m trying to get my mental health back on track and your video of you installing your extensions gave me a little dash of hope that I could restart my “loc journey” again and not have to give up per se. I figured I would share my perspective as I know it might not be the traditional journey but I still experienced something throughout this process. I learned a lesson that’s for sure!!!

honestly, your Locs are BEAUTIFUL!! period I can't stand how ugly our own people are to us at times its sad. I had my first set of Locs for 10 years, I started them before there was even a loc extension option but if I had that option, I would have done it also, I grew them long and cut them anyway. now I'm on my second set. All Locs are beautiful to me they come in all shapes sizes, colors, you can get extensions or grow your own, there is so much beautiful individuality and variety much like the entire black community colors, sizes, beautiful individuality I wish we all seen it that way. YET we put one another down so much and all think we are the leader of the Loc Community and give is all a bad name by being so ugly, it's so disheartening. I promise you we all aren't this way. The loc community should appreciate people like you who create content that shows how both journeys can have benefits. I have a niece here in my city that does them she does them in different colors... a lot of people go to her they're beautiful. if a person never told you that they have loc extensions no one will ever know no one will ever know so what's the big deal like you said just because it isn't for you doesn't mean that it's not for everybody else... I agree with you 100%, you don't like unfollow Keep scrolling I personally just started my loc journey in May and although I have seen significant growth and have been able to retwist my own hair I would like to try loc extensions because I don't want to color my hair anymore so I want to do some with color just to see what it's like and I'm going to do them I don't care what nobody thinks... So please continue to do your videos cuz I want ideas for my extensions as well thank you ❤️❤️❤️

Girl I been rocking with you since the beginning when you started your locs. And I’ve been locked for 2.5 years. I continue to watch even after you added your extensions because the content is good! Also I’ve referred people to your installation series who I’ve seen ask about them in different loc groups. I had loc extensions for a year before combing them out and restarting on my own for my own reasons. But both ways are a journey. Keep being you. Keep putting out the content. Keep giving us the styles. Keep giving the lewks. Be well and stay blessed!

I think the reason why ppl trip out (i could be wrong) is because ppl that start their journey naturally go through all the phases and they build a connection with their hair and experience self love and a spiritual journey but they feel like loc extensions are cheating, you don’t go through any phases, and it’s more so a spur of the moment thing and just getting it for the “trend” purposes unlike the ppl who actually had to go through the phases. I can also see ppl being upset bc ppl who get the extensions don’t go through the quote on quote “ugly phase”. Ppl have to realize that everyone has their reasons for whatever. Ppl also need to mind their business because it’s not like it’s their head and ppl in my opinion got too comfortable not watching their mouth on social media. Like you said the journeys are different.
@SharmelLynnette

I definitely understand where you’re coming from. However everyone doesn’t have the same connection with their hair. Also if it’s truly a journey of self love and spirituality, someone “cheating” the process shouldn’t take away from someone elses personal journey, if it’s truly about self. I just feel like the disrespect and assumptions are unnecessary, especially as someone who’s gone through the traditional route and went through the different phases. And even if someone chooses to go the loc extensions route, it’s their choice and you never know what led them to that decision. I definitely appreciate your comment, and thanks for watching! ❤️

I think the backlash is probably from people who care about the origin of black people and locs and what that means to them. Where else locs are becoming a mainstream style that people are just using to get a certain look and they might find that “rude” to the culture i guess because it’s less respected.

18:42 I just came across this video as I was just looking for videos on how to wash loc extensions. I have heard a lot about how cruel people can be in the loc community when you have Loc extensions. This is the first time I’ve seen it. I am 8 months into my JOURNEY! Me deciding to get locs and deciding to get loc extensions had nothing to do with my spiritual beliefs are feeling. I always liked locs. One of my daughters started her locs herself. They are now almost down to her butt. The Audacity for someone to come on a platform that they already feel hate for is ridiculous! This world is sad. I was encouraged to start them with just my own hair but I did what I wanted to do for my reasons. I’m so happy you created this video. I like my locs and it’s a process. I have frizz like any other loved person may have. I am trusting the process. You should really create more content about loc extensions. Well I haven’t watched everything you have made 😊yet but I will. Some of us appreciate you!

I’m so happy you made this video! I just started my loc Journey with loc Extensions! It has not been long at all but I have and will go through things that I will refer to as part of my Journey. I was a loose naturally and I just got tired of looking for someone to do my hair. I moved from California to Texas and couldn’t find anyone that was suitable for me. My reasons for locking my hair is not important, I just know I love ❤️ locks and have so for quite sometime. Everyone should be embraced no matter how they are starting. I like how you stated your Video was Titled (LOC Extensions) If you don’t like the Loc extensions , why are you watching. No need to be rude, when people are here trying to get information like myself. Keep doing what you do and God will continue to bless you and everything you are trying to do. You are beautiful ❤and I don’t hear anything in your content that would be considered rude or nasty.

Locs will always be beautiful on a black woman no matter how she starts it, I’m glad you put this out cause a lot of women need to be aware of this. I personally started my locs in the traditional two strand twist on short Afro “4c” hair and now I’m 3 years in and I personally enjoyed every bit of my journey from the beginning to now but my journey is not yours, and as long as you prioritize the health of your hair no one would even know the difference. I feel like maybe the problem starts to come in for some people when the loc extensions themselves hinder your actual hair then help it, like using false hair or getting them done by someone who is not trained in attaching the extensions to the hair with no problems, but either way it goes locs are locs and they will always be beautiful no matter the journey

Your locs are gorgeous and I love your channel 💕 you're right, some people are very insecure and get very bold online just to make themselves feel better. I believe in working smarter and not harder. If loc extensions or instant locs work for someone, then cool. I started my locs out with micro two strand twists, and have had mine for about 14 months. If I ever decided to start a new set, I would most likely go with loc extensions because I don't know if I have the patience to go the traditional route again lol. And like you said, it's not about the journey so much as it is about the destination.

Your hair is absolutely gorgeous! I love it and I love the color! I’m so sorry that you have to deal with yet another reason some feel the need to cause divisions and criticize someone else. My spiritual journey does not involve my hair…it’s my relationship with God. I am starting my locs because I want no longer want to deal with my natural hair…it’s a lot of work and I don’t want my hair to be a job…I have other things to do! It’s as simple as that and that’s my right and my business! Lol! I’m not understanding why so many like to judge and cause division no matter what you do or what “ community “ they identify with. First it’s division between natural hair and relaxed hair, then in the natural community it’s between different hair types..crazy….now here we are with locs…DIVISIONS…WOW! I fully intend to get extensions. I am 50 years old and have earned the right to do what I want. I don’t ask permission, nor opinions..compliments or otherwise..I did not invite anyone on a journey that I’m not even on, so no need to comment on it. I don’t ask anyone about their journeys or whether their hair is real or not…I just compliment on what is beautiful! If a person can diminish a person’s worth in a “community” to something as superficial as hair…then maybe there is another spiritual journey they need to be taking. This is not to diminish in any way the importance someone else places on THEIR hair journey.. YOU do YOU, however do not judge someone else’s value or “journey” based on what YOU feel is important in YOUR life.

I started my journey 2 years ago. But never had a thought that I would ever judge someone for not taking the same journey I did through the traditional way. It’s the same way going to a black church when you walk in the first thing that’s said is “ girl look at what she got on!” When they should be saying “welcome sister I am glad you are here” As women we all have our own journey and especially as a black women congratulate don’t hate. Some are just miserable and there is nothing you can do to change their minds on how they feel! Stay blessed luv great content🧘🏽! Hatred is different from constructive criticism this is pure hatred, disrespectful, and disgusting to say the least the messages that were sent to another beautiful black woman trying to better herself! 🤢 🤦🏽‍♀️ we have it hard enough out here without doing it to each other!

I added loc extensions 2 weeks ago(after seeing U add)&I absolutely love them. My own locs are abt 10” long but wanted to add length for more styling versatility. I also made my own locs&installed myself. Took me 3 days(abt 2/3 hrs per day) to make 80 locs, of which 62 were used. Then it took abt 8 hrs to install, which I did over 2 days. Was very time consuming but worth the $ I saved!!!🤗🤗🤗

gurl. I just started my own journey, and I've been debating about vlogging, then decided against it, basically because of everything you so eloquently stated in this video, about the "mean girl" gatekeeping behavior I keep seeing pop up in the comments across MULTIPLE channels. Beautifully said. Everyone's journey is unique (alien superstar baby), and precious because it's YOUR journey. I appreciate the way you handled yourself, and I appreciate both your transparency, and honesty. I found your channel doing my own research around locs, and I valued your point of view on loc extensions. Keep doing what you doing, with that positive spirit, and the blessings will continue to flow for you.

When I first loc'd my hair, I did it via the 'no brushing/neglect' method. Six years later, I had a baby and after eight months experienced post partum hair loss and it was quite severe. In a panic, I cut my locs out because I thought the weight was adding problems (my hair was down to my mid back by that point). As soon as the hair loss stopped, I reloc'd my hair and I put my old locs back in as extensions - it was still my hair, but it was extensions. I have - from time to time - purchased human hair and made them super long, but I can't handle the weight of them THAT long. Now I've got my hair to a good (for me) length and I love it (it's roughly the same as yours is now - looks gorgeous btw) - some of it is extended with my hair, some of it is extended with HH extensions and some isn't extended at all. And all of that is OKAY! It was my journey to get where I am now and I've been loc'd for the better part of 12 years - and it has been a journey!
