Let’s whip up a show-stopping croquembouche in 50 minutes... said no one, EVER! In this episode, we’ve taken the ‘pass it on’ game to a new, relentless level and challenged the boys to produce a croquembouche, a French dessert consisting of choux pastry puffs piled into a cone and bound with threads of caramel. What could possibly go wrong?
This episode was filmed before lockdown
We used the Crispy Cream Puffs recipe from our Deserts in Duvets book, if you want to look at more recipes from Desserts in Duvets, you can find ‘em all on the Sorted Club: Books app. Find out more here: bit.ly/3bBGUJs

Ive seen the croquembouche episode on masterchef australia where they were professionals by any other name at that point, had advice from a french master baker who is considered literally the best in the world, a full step by step exact recipe to follow that he provided and if I remember correctly a two hour clock. Getting anything close with five people, the first three of which are at most advanced home cooks, very limited communication between them, and a fifty minute clock is amazing even if they had a full recipe to work from.

@@saint-cetacean agree, this matters a lot more than people would guess I'm sure, they will have also practiced the recipe numerous times and got it down to a science. They will also be definitionally exceptional cooks to get invited to try and get into the main show. I'm not saying this is an impossible task, but that someone did it with full preparation and practice time ahead of the task and they still took longer than the sorted guys only further emphasises how difficult an ask this was. Getting the rolls made, filled and on a plate with caramel with just 50 minutes is a big ask. There was no margin of error as it needs all three of these elements to be the right dish. I'd even go so far as to say any change in order whatsoever, except maybe swapping the chefs, and it will be a fail. They were all perfectly placed to maximise the chances of success.

This was one of the best relays ever. Couldn't stop laughing. I saw croquembouche and was already excited, then I heard the intro and knew where this was going and was already scared for the boys. However they really did well, this episode had so many highlights. Mike clearly was cheating, there were just too many hints, but with that task, SSS, I would say the hints where necessary and how everyone reacted on finding out the theme was just hilarious. When Jamie said we had a laugh I really did they know their audience quite well. The best, which I had to watch several times was when Jamie recounted his turn and was talking about the filling, everyone's face mirrored mine when I saw him in action. You did really well and this was definitely a pass.

I am literally stunned... I had to make croquembouche as part of my graduation from culinary school. It literally took me HOURS and was one of the most stressful things I've ever done, culinarily speaking. The fact that the guys made something this awesome in less than 1 hour is utterly mind boggling! I am also incredibly impressed. That said...Janice definitely takes the Most Sassy award for today. I thought she was going to have a stroke during Ebbers time, talking about Jamie's score. Other than everybody's blind panic when they all realized just what sort of culinary hell they'd each walked in on, that was the best part of this video. :) Two (molten caramel seared...poor James...been there, done that, got the scars, literally) thumbs way, WAY up guys!!
