The piano-scene is so powerful. Nai seemed pretty content playing on his own and I imagine him just having very low social batteries so he needs to have a lot of alone-time (maybe even having some autistic signs here). Playing the piano is his time to recharge. And then Vash comes in and it is just exhausting to deal with someone right now, but ofc he lets him (a, because it’s his brother and he gets away with a lot and b, because it is even more exhausting to argue right now). But then they play together and though it clashes at first they manage to create a great melody, so either Nai is trying to prove that he still can keep up with Vashs melody-changes or he really just feels „charged up“ by his brothers presence. It is also super interesting to see how Nai is asking the doctor to help the plants. Because unlike Vash he can’t „heal“ plants and needs help from outside. 10:40 one of the things you really begin to understand during all Trigun adaptions is that Vash is propably the only person who can live the pacifistic lifestyle on this planet. Considering this badly scarred up he is you can easily imagine that a normal human wouldn’t have survived all the horrendous stuff that he had to life through.

Regarding their discussion about being able to understand less conscious creatures, I wonder if either of them has read Roald Dahl's "The Sound Machine." It's fitting that in that story, the creatures are plants as well :)

I love how in depth your discussions get! I think there's a few details of nuance you might have missed (the show's fast pace doesn't help that) that makes it even more complicated; (No spoilers, TLDR at the end) -Luida's plan is ideal (for the survival side of the problem), humans would eventually have soil TO farm on; you can't grow crops in sand, but it's also a bit idealistic. Terraforming the planet would absolutely lessen the load on the Plants in the long run (_if successful_) and let humans be less dependent on them; the problem is getting there while keeping the human/Plant populations alive with limited Plants to do so. I've seen people scorn Roberto's criticism about it taking too long, but he's unfortunately got a point. Unless you sacrifice a portion of the population to free up enough Plants, you're taking a slow approach while racing against a declining population. What's the point (from the humans' perspective) if you go extinct before you're even finished changing the planet to survive? He points out it takes a LOT of Plants to support the growth of the flora in that small space, and most places aren't _privileged_ enough to have that many plants to spare without sacrificing their population. Good long term idea, flawed in how to GET there. -The Plants are absolutely vital to their survival on this planet. Odds are they were looking for a more hospitable planet, but they crashed on this one. It's *possible* that the original goal was to use Plants to terraform a planet, and sustain them until then, but because of the crash and reconstruction of civilization, there isn't enough left over. It's possible the Plants weren't *meant* to sustain a population to this degree for this long. -A good majority of the population may not even be aware the Plants are sentient if they rarely exit their dormant state (and education levels seem very low outside of cities). Similar to your animal analogy, the Plants can't communicate with humans. -Obviously there's the issue of human greed and using the Plants for comfort over survival, but you guys went over that wonderfully! On the Plants' side, (outside of the brothers), the rest of the Plants actually CAN'T sustain themselves without humans to take care of them (this was confirmed outside the show, I believe, not a spoiler). It seems sort of like a living nuclear power plant in that sense; without outside forces regulating them, they can burn themselves out. They also can't survive outside of that solution they're in. And again, obviously, the morality of keeping a sentient species as a power source, but you guys covered that as well! TLDR; Trigun has given us a messed up kind of symbiosis that, while benefiting one side FAR more than the other, isn't ideal for _either_ species in the long run while in this environment. It pits morals and compassion against human nature and survival, and lets the audience try to figure out what the solution is, with Vash and Nai at opposing ends of the spectrum. (Sorry for how long this is, but your analysis was so good and brought up so many good conversation points!)

Loved your discussion on this episode as usual. Honestly as much as I love this series with all my life, I think 13 episodes were just too short to show all the world build-ups and the deep understanding of characters and their intentions. But I'm glad that you were intrigued by the message and themes they unfolded through this episode.

To me since watching this episode it shows how this adaption of Knives is way better tham what we got from the OG anime. He's so human and it's ironic

sadly the manga wasn't done at the time, so they couldn't do much with Knives and certain other characters. But OG trigun is still damn good and Knives is still a great villain just like Legato Bluesummers.

I think it's an okay adaption, the manga highlighted his motivation a lot better.

I don't think the Plants were created. Otherwise they wouldn't default to CLONING them from a set of cells, when they could just generate them from scratch if they knew how... I assume they found the OG Plant at some point somewhere, and harvested cells from it to create clones essentially. Since they spawn matter from nothing via some type of higher dimension energy, I assume they originate from beyond base 3D to begin with, and given the sealed environment bubbles, base 3D seems to be toxic to them eventually, which I assume was what they originally found, a dying Plant essentially, on a bleedout timer so to speak. I assume the Plant Molecular Scientists know what they are doing, as they aptly named the job title w/ an on-the-nose term like Sinner

according to a twitter thread someone posted from a con, which included a video of the panel for this anime, the director Kenji Muto just casually revealed a bunch of worldbuilding lore, including the fact that the Plants were created by cloning the cells of some kind of mummified alien creature humans found at some point. So, going by that, they DID sort of create them? Or at least they had a major part to play in the spread of their species. But it's also unclear if what they made was actually the same as the thing they found, maybe it was just the starting point and what they made was something else.

Considering how the last couple episodes are gonna go i wonder what they're gonna think about their whole "Nai is using the humans and maybe eventually if they can turn human-plant hybrids with experimentation we can find some semblance of peace" theory because ngl, i def did not get that vibe as i was watching on my own. i can see where they got the idea, but personally i thought Nai was never gonna let that happen. He'll use the humans for his agenda and then soon as he gets the plants at a suitable place where they can survive on their own, he's gonna kill humanity so fast.

Also I get that Luida's plan, while idealistic is still very flawed. I feel like it should be to her credit that idk?? Home has known Vash for so long, they're not gonna just. Abuse the Plants, like the rest of humans of Noman's Land who would have no idea that Plants are sentient at all. Like Vash tells them how to care for the Plants, so it would make sense for them to do their diligence in making sure the plants are not outputting past their limits while attempting this terraforming plan. They have a very cynical outlook for Vash's relationship to Home (which yeah, understandable) but it's been like. 150 years. Their relationship's gotten better, surely.

Everyone says how much they love this new Nai. I personally love the new Zazie way more! Cute non gender-conforming bionicle mask wearing bug being! And at the end, they ask the 66 billion double dollar question that's as tropey as it is always relevant now with how DAMN HOT this summer heat wave gets!
