The SOSS hinges are great! They are also used in the Aerospace industry (not talking specifically about these ones), I am talking about the design style, for monument/furniture doors.

I've used them when I designed commercial projects where the client needed semi-concealed doors. I have used them in both mirrored walls and wood paneled walls where the door is concealed by a reveal pattern. If well executed they are hard to spot. Very nice product, the doors with mirror on them were especially heavy, no problems. I would also like to hear more on the shop, I'm building my new one and its always great to hear other peoples ideas!

A question, if I may ... on the hinge side of the jamb, is there a second stud, inboard of the first? I couldn't quite comprehend what Jon was indicating. He didn't provide a closeup photo to clarify it.

hi, thank you for the demo. in our area here, we have 3" x 4" door frame with inner rabbet of 1.5 " (38 mm) x 1/2 " (12.7 mm). how do we install SOSS hinges ?

Have you ever used the Soss template to mortise this 212 hinge? I just recently made some test mortises in both pine and Poplar and I’m finding this hinge to very hard to push all the way into the mortise to sit flush. I’m using the required 42024 router guide and an Amana 51304 router bit. I can’t seem to figure out why the fit is so tight though. And ideas or thoughts? I’m wondering if I should use the Amana 46259S bit that has the double spiral cutters on it. Maybe this would produce a better cut.

Can these hinges be fit into a standard 3/4” jamb with the buck stud behind the jamb mortised? Or should they be installed in a 1.5” jamb?

Does this hinge allow the door to swing both directions.

Another "Advantage" to these hinges are for concealed entries. I plan on using them when I convert my wife's library to built-in shelving, I will be putting a large safe behind a corner shelf and using Soss hinges to hide the access point

When removing the door for painting, when you're unscrewing it, would the mortise in the door take all the weight of the door, or should you have someone or something supporting the door until all the screws are out?

The mortise supports a lot of the weight, but you definitely want to put some shims under the door to support it while removing the screws.

I'm wondering if these hinges are better or worse for heavier doors. I have a small closet that houses our air handler. I'm thinking of swamping out the current bi-fold doors to a cabinet that opens like a door. These hidden hinges would seem perfect but I'm concerned about the weight. It will be more than merely the cabinet but the contents as well.

I would contact the supplier with the relevant information and ask them for a product specification sheet. They will tell you how many hinges you will require to carry the load, so weighing the door and its contents would be advisable before hand. If you are using the existing door lining I would recommend checking its perfectly square and not in wind (twisted) as I can not see how you would be able to adjust the hinges once they are routed.

Thanks,, that's kind of what I was thinking. I'm thinking of completely rebuild the jam, .. and I figured that the hinges would be rated for total pounds. I'm concerned that the total weight and the swing, .. including the leverage created by total extension, would need to be figured. Accordingly, what do I need ti address? And , that was really the root of my question.

If you want to case your door traditionally do not use this hinge. It is for flush trim less applications only. It has no throw like a butt hinge.

How do you adjust the hinges if something is a little out of wack?

You can't, that why I used Sugatsune hinges, they can be adjusted by a couple of mm in all 3 directions.

⁠@@cg3356yep agreed, my father-in-law bought soss hinges and after installing them I went Sugatsune and such a difference. Its a must to have adjustability

Cant wait to see you install that door and those hinges in an existing door lining. Ban impact drivers for life will be my grumpy old man campaign.

Yep exactly! would never work on an old frame way to much variables and things to go wrong when working on old frames. Looks like you need everything to be spot on when pluming the frame in. Would also like to know if theres any way to micro adjust the hinges when to door is installed? in the video it looks like the bottom hinge could do with being pushed out a fraction, you can see it gap open slightly on the handle side of the door as you look down it.

And then you take of the door whilst the wall is wet plastered and come back to a swollen nightmare. Looks like it would be better to fit dummy door linings first like the good old days. To be fare the latch side of the door is still free to move so he could have sneaked a packer in to take up that fine adjustment.

Dead right with the plaster .This system just seems fit for very highend builds as he said in the video in fairness. Just on the gap in the door if you look down the hinge side you can see its closed in a bit to tight to the frame which shows something probably went wrong with the hinge dept during fitting but I know what you mean about packing out the striker side of the frame. Way to many things to go tits up using these hinges, I'll stick to butt hinges, a sharp chisel and the traditional ways.

Haha I've seen some lads use a full cornflakes box on the one hinge, must of been a monday
