I love how the camera zooms out as Raziel says the line 'my history comes full circle'. And what do we see on the floor? A snake. Easting it's tail. The same snake symbol that appears throughout the game. Marvelous.

anemiandEh dEh Janos Audron must stay dead, for if he is alive - he can be used as the power source for the engine in BO2. He knows, as we can tell in BO1 and SR2, that Janos is dead - and the most likely culprit in returning him to life is Raziel. He dies in SR2 before BO2, as - to avoid spoiling anything for you - we see that he gets Resurrected.

I'll make this brief. Kain doesn't die in this game. Technically, Raziel was supposed to kill him but they managed to change history so it didn't happen. Basically, at the start of Defiance. Raziel has been stuck in the Stuck in the Spectral Realm for 500 years with the Elder God, because of the events in this ending. He's scared of going back to the Material realm in case he encounters the reaver again. And meanwhile, Kain is still stuck in the time where Soul Reaver 2 ended.

And not only are events in BO1 changed after this piont in time in this video, but events in SR1 have also changed slightly. Raziel doesn't have memories of the changes cause the timeline distortion and re-shuffling takes place "around him" and not "to him". He will always retain the original memories of the original timeline. It is speculated that Vorador either died by the hands of Kain due to their disagreement about Umah after BO2. Or has lived in exile to Kain's Empire throughout SR1.

the idea is to never allow yourself to run out of new foes to slay with the reaver raziel. never allow yourself to encounter yourself.

@batu04 I don't think you fully understand it :P LoK doesn't end at Defiance, and the only thing Kain did to the Elder God was to piss him off, he didn't really stop him in any way. Janos was possessed by the Hylden Lord, thus giving him the means to open the Hylden Gate and make Janos a slave of the Device. However, both these actions were made undone by Kain at the end of BO2. see next comment -->

After recently finishing Defiance. I now know why Kain said Janos must stay dead. It was to prevent the Hylden from possessing Janos. But as we know, it happens anyway thanks to Raziel. I really need to play the rest of this amazing series sometime. That way I'll be able to grasp all of the plot.

@BlindmansJesus probably because technically both Raziels are 2 different beings. yes they're the same body and everything, but he had no memory or anything of his past life. either that or its just something they couldn't really figure out how to explain so they left it as a hole in the story.

Cheers for putting this all up, it was awesome to watch again, im desperatly praying that the game gets a final ending, and no new bastards better not decide to change certain elemants of the game, i want a proper ending for the game and not censorsed for shitty reaons:P tho other than the demon fights i want to play this again but iv nt gt it with me:(

I can't remember how vorodor was alive in BO2, but I believe his beheading still happened. Their is a reference to it, as raziel lead mobieus to his mansion. This part however was a plot hole, because it didn't fit into the precise time frame that it was suppose to happen. The writers even acknowledge it

First of all thanx for uploading! I haven't played defiance but I plan to do so now so I wanted some recap. I have a question though. I assume that all these events are supposed to happen so that Raziel's soul goes into the Reaver. The only thing that shouldn't be there is future Kain bcus Raziel is supposed to kill him earlier in the game, right? So my question is, who gains possession of the reaver after Raziel kills his past self in the unaltered timeline? No spoilers for Defiance pls lol.

Exactly. Vorodor was still captured by Mobieus's mob in the alternate timeline. I just believe that the beheading never took place in the alternate timeline. My hypothosis is that once the pillars were destroyed, Janos Oldren was possesed by a powerful Hylden. The Hylden took Janos's body to the device hidden beneath Meridian. On his way he may have wrecked havoc in villages and settlements including the one Vorodor was detained in. Vorodor was able to use the chaos to his advantage and escape

@anemiandEh In essence the questions you ask hinge on Defiance, while BO2, strangely enough, has parts that answer questions after Defiance. The games themselves are a kind of meta-ouroboros. The middle games have events before and after the events of the first 2 while the last game, Defiance, technically takes place in the middle. However the young Kain from BO2 is not aware of Future Kain from SR2 so he is not aware of certain implications.

Surprisingly, I was reading through some forums about this game and a lot of people didn't like it, or just the gameplay. Which surprises me because it is my favorite in the entire series.

So I remember having a hard time with the gameplay as a kid, but holy hell is the story great. I'd never have guessed that "vampires and time travel" could ever work, yet it is one of the most compelling stories about defying fate and changing history I've ever seen.

@linikratyo continuation from previous comment --> So it makes no sense as to why Kain wants to prevent Raziel from resurrecting Janos in SR2 and Defiance. Janos however was casted into the Demon Dimension and can still return later on... Thus the real "hylden trap" might not have been revealed yet.

This game stretched and consumed all other games that tried to say they had elaborate plots and vocabulary's. It crushed all of it's competitors in terms of complication and even the most informed of fans admit to learning new things every time they play the game over. God bless to Rovelius.

Rovelius, I have played BO and SR all parts.Haven't played defiance yet.I can understand the timeline and paradoxal incidents that occur within the game.What troubles me is that I cannot understand why Kain says Janos must stay dead.Also, I do not understand what part in the timeline has the death of Janos when Sarafan lord throws before Kain's eyes in BO2? Sorry ,but for that part I got my timeline very very confused. Maybe it's simple. Explanation, please?

@hbk92701 The wraithblade was initially just cast out into the aether, but at the end of Defiance, entered into Kain. So Raziel still exists within him.

The Blood Reaver just consumed his blood, the soul is allowed to drift in order for Kain to use it later.

@VirgilHilts1944 Oh, of course he does. Kain turned Raziel and his vampiric bretheren into vampires and made them his lieutenants. They all were aware, that it is Kains doing. By then, he was the oldest vampire out there. That's why some of them even called him father, or god.

Good question but no. During the events of SR2 which are the original timeline, older Kain was suppossed to be dead already. Mobieus rigged Kain and Raziel's destinies. Raziel was supposed to kill older Kain at their 2nd encounter within the Sarafan stronghold at King William's tomb. Mobieus original plan would have worked but he didn't realize that Kain would one day learn his rigged destiny for himself after he founded his empire when Kain discovered the Chronoplast chamber(seen in SR1 ending)

Thats what im saying...raziel resurrected janos,providing the hylden with the means to open the gate, kain tried to stop raziel so that they would not use janos for this, he warned him in defiance too,but raziel didnt was in part influenced by the hylden to kill kain

No, the reaver infused itself with Wraith Raziel's soul at the time he killed the human versions of his vampire "brothers" and himself, so that Kain could draw their souls back into their corpses about 500 years after Blood Omen.

I still think human Raziel should be able to recognise his own voice. Granted, nobody sounds like they think they do, but you'd still think he'd notice a similarity. Oh well. Hardly the point of this scene, is it?

@linikratyo About the hylden and falling into their trap?I believe he reffers to the events on BO2...? That may explain why he told Raziel not to raise janos. Raziel didnt listen and the hylden posessed Janos..later you find him in BO2. Thats only my theory,but not sure. However I didnt understood the end of defiance,what did Kain managed to change in history?He stopped the Elder God..but the Pillars? I love how the history of LOK's.. it makes you use your mind to fit all the pieces together:)

the spirits of the balance have been purified out of corruption. kain is anew the guardian, purified too by the touch of raziel. the balance is restored, will forever remains as kain is alive.

Late reply. Exactly. This is still the Blood Reaver. By preventing Raziel's soul from entering the blade it never becomes the Soul Reaver that Kain has in Blood Omen 1/Soul Reaver 1.

Is the Kain that appears in these various times the same Kain or each time lines Kain? Reason i ask is because if Raziel had died here.. how exactly would the original Kain have had "this" soul reaver, wouldn't the Kain displaced in time ( the one who says" Janous must stay dead" ) take that reaver, seeing as he is without one currently? I'm so confused! and i've played all the games to, lol.

The timeline is somewhat confusing. You must understand, the events of BO2 never took place in the original timeline for Kain was the last surviving vampire in Nosgoth at the end of BO1. The event that took place in this video changed the future from that point on and inadvertantly Kain's past aswell. In the new timeline certain events in BO1 have changed some are known others are not, such as the beheading of Vorador in BO1 doesn't happen. These changes allow events for BO2 to come in fruition.

Vorodor was able to escape while Mobieus's mob had their hands full. Mobieus's mob without strong leadership fell apart with the death of Mobieus at the hands of older Kain and Raziel. In the origonal timeline it ceased believing all nosgoths vampires were extinct with the death of Vorodor. None of it is actually confirmed by the writers, but this is my interpretation of it. I've attempted to devise an explanation that covers all bases. This is the best I can come up with.

it doesnt make sense! If raziel is not trapped in the blade, it can never break since he would not be in it. But that soul in the blade, the wraith blade had to be in there somehow. But wait, thats what happens in defiance, Raziel does go into the blade at the end. But what happens to the wraith blade? Would there be two souls trapped in the blade when it breaks next? Then three, since the sould never continues forward in time after the revear breaks.

Something about this whole story that has bothered me, is that if raziel lead mobieus to vordor, much as he lead his men to Janos, wouldn't that mean that the mobieus in the BO1 timeline was aware that kain would postpone his fate as we see in this video. Doesn't this also mean then that the release of the hylden always happend, and the BO2 isn't a drastic change in the timeline?

Damn it why did this game have to end a cliffhanger??? They could have at least added another ending!! Like, if you could get past your Sarafan self without killing him, fight Moebius and gain Janos' heart, and then maybe Raziel could have found out what turned the angelic creatures into vampires... THAT WOULD BE A GOOD ENDING!

But what does the snake eating it's tail mean? Does it allude to the Wheel of Fate, or is it a metaphor for how Raziel defeated his former self?

GmodPlusWoW the snake eating its own tail is called Oroborus, the symbol of the infinite cycle of death and rebirth. You could say it's related to the wheel of fate in some way.

SakuraWish The timeline jumps through history thanks to Moebius and Kain using time streaming devices and portals. The cycle of Raziel's time line up to this point is: Wraith Raziel kills Sarafan Raziel, 500 or so years later Kain resurrects Sarafan Raziel and turns him into Vampire Raziel, Kain has Vampire Raziel casted into the abyss knowing he will be turned into Wraith Raziel. And so the cycle repeats itself through Soul Reaver 1 & 2. But as we see it throughout Soul Reaver 2 Kain is constantly trying to stop key points in the timeline from happening, and in turn stop the cycle from repeating itself. The only problem is that history abhors a paradox, and in turn as events in the past are changed, nozgoth began to strain and reshuffle itself causing dreadful consequences.

One thing i dont get. Kain used the Soul Reaver in SR 1 against Raziel. Strinking him with it destroyed it because paradox. So Kain must have believed if the Reaver is existing the enemy would benefit from it. But how? Or was the whole act just to proof something? Or did he know the spiritual form of the reaver must connect with raziel to move the plot? Im kinda lost here....

Rovelius Yeah but WHY? Im a huge fan of the entire thing and i try to understand this but i cant figure it out. There must be a reason for this. I refuse to believe the storywriters of the LoK franchise are dumb enough to oversee such an important thing.

kain knew everything, at the end, one of them had to die, but his whole intention was to find a way to restore the balance without any of them (kain and raziel) dying. Well, at the end you'll know what happens if you play Defiance

Kain has seen the future, or at least the future that was prescribed for them, so he knows how he is meant to die and how Raziel is meant to die. They already changed Kains fate before with the meeting in Williams Crypt. That proved Kains theory about the Reavers being the cause of history changing. So now he simply knows that he needs to change Raziel's fate and knows how to do it. As for the initial destruction of the Reaver, that is because Raziel was already contained in it, there was no hope for that form of the Reaver, so once Raziel unknowingly absorbed his former self then destiny could finally be changed.

Well the game must retains some platforming elements, if it didn't the whole game would be a huge cutscene. Not that I would mind, but if it wasn't for the forges, it would be a bit too straight-forwarded.

Here's a definition of "abhor", because I had to check a dictionary myself to get its meaning lol. Abhor: to hate a way of behaving or thinking, often because you think it is not moral. E.G: I abhor all forms of racism. Superb game, is all I have to say. And yes, I also believe there should be a book off it. Although there exists a comic of the things to come in SR2. It's pretty awesome AND I HAVE IT BWAHAHAHA XD
