Some years after the master, our evolution would follow, until I had the honor of surpassing my lord. For my transgression, I earned a new kind of reward... Agony!

Kain reflects on millennia of uncertainty and doubt, remembers his all but futile struggle against shadows on invisible strings moved by unseen hands...the atrocities he has committed and would do so again...for that second throw, a better throw against his destiny. And so he did match them, move by move...the tyrannous stars. Now he stands alone, at the end of all things, forced to make the choice again. ..Sacrifice himself... His piercing eyes look up at the night sky, searching... ..Or let Nosgoth die. What is a King to do? He lowers his weary head. The abyssal tendrils reach out to him, infinite eyes watching, imagining the taste of his soul, so close...so stagnant, so wretched.. "AS LONG AS SINGLE ONE OF US STANDS..WE ARE LEGION." Those words...those are his own words..but that voice...like an eternity of torment condensed into a perpetual harrowing SCREAM. Kain looks down, the Reaver blade is engulfed in white hot fire, sapphire flames blazing through the eye sockets of the skull guard. He smiles, lifts up his head, eyes filled with regret, hope and...defiance. "Raziel, you ARE worthy." Kain, The Scion of Balance raises his right hand, his sword.. The dark creeping parasitic mass of tendrils halted..hesitating. For even false gods knew what it meant when Kain raised the Soul Reaver in anger. It meant you were dead. VAE VICTIS!!

Soul Reaver takes place within the fictional world of Nosgoth, in which the health of the Earth is tied to the nine Pillars of Nosgoth, and each pillar is represented by a guardian. Prior to the events of the game, the Guardians were corrupted, and after Kain murdered eight of them, he realized it was the ninth. When Kain refused to sacrifice himself to restore the Pillars, he condemned Nosgoth to decay eternal, and proceeded to resurrect his six lieutenant vampires, including Raziel, to rule the land. At the time of the Soul Reaver intro sequence, vampires are the dominant species on earth, as are super predators, humans have been decimated, and each vampire tribe has claimed a region of Nosgoth and turned their attention to internal affairs. . Unknown to vampires there is the Elder God, called Vortanius, a powerful entity, who controls the Wheel of Destiny, a cycle of reincarnation of souls, a loop of predestination. However, since vampires are immortal, their souls do not turn on the wheel, causing the earth to decay while the Wheel remains immobile. When Raziel is revived, a thousand years after the game's intro sequence, Nosgoth is on the brink of total ecological collapse. Characters The protagonist of Soul Reaver is the vampire-turned-spook named Raziel, whom Kain murders at the beginning of the game. Although Kain is the protagonist of the previous game, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, in this installment he is the main antagonist. The Elder God resurrects and guides Raziel, explaining the game's controls, and describes the events leading up to the story.5 Ariel, who preceded Kain as guardian of the Pillar of Balance, appears as a spirit and provides advice to the player. While searching for her, Raziel meets his siblings - Melchiah, Zephon, Rahab, and Dumah - who serve as bosses in the game. Each has developed unique abilities, which are partially absorbed when Raziel kills them and devours their souls. A fifth brother, Turel, was omitted due to limitations in development time.6 Argument At the beginning of the game Raziel approaches Kain's throne and shows his newly acquired wings. In an act of apparent jealousy, Kain rips the bones from Raziel's wings and orders him to be thrown into the Lake of the Dead, a natural whirlpool. However, Raziel is seemingly resurrected by the Elder God and this He convinces him to be the one who restores Nosgoht's balance by becoming his "soul reaver", his avenging angel (soul reaver) and takes revenge, assassinating Kain.With the guidance of the Ancient God, Raziel he adapts to his new existence and returns to Nosgoth. Upon infiltrating a necropolis inhabited by vampires, Raziel finds his brother Melchiah, who has regressed into a beast unable to maintain his own flesh.8 Raziel murders Melchiah and devours her soul, after which he confronts Kain in the face of the ruined Pillars of Nosgoth in the Clan Shrine. Kain does not seem surprised to see Raziel, he even appears to be waiting for him, Kain appeals to his anger by confessing what he did with his vampiric clan, which further enrages the latter. When Raziel begins to criticize him, Kain simply launches a tirade against Raziel, pointing out the disgrace into which their empire has fallen and challenging him to combat. However, it breaks when it hits Raziel and Kain escapes, strangely satisfied. Raziel enters the spectral plane and finds the spirit of the sword, which he hooks up with Raziel. To Raziel's horror, he realizes that the crypt was made for him and his siblings; As a cruel irony, Kain revived the Sarafan to serve as his vampire children. Raziel falls into a secret passageway under the crypt and finds a flooded abbey, inhabited by the Rahabim clan, whose members have evolved into amphibians, overcoming its weakness to water; their leader, Rahab, has become a merman. The original ending of Soul Reaver involved Raziel activating the Silenced Cathedral's great weapon to blast 'a deadly hymn' that wiped all of vampiredom from the face of Nosgoth. I can't help thinking the sluggish, wheezing machinery, the grunting cries of animalistic fury, and the ultimate pipe-organ music and choral singing is meant to represent that exact moment. Raziel, bereft of his brothers and master, watching as the world dies beneath him. Avenged. Victorious. And utterly alone...

listened to this while sorting out my rpg character background. 1000 years ago, Egotistical mortals dared to think them selves divine, and so were struck down for there hubris. A Millenia later, one of these heretics were reborn. He was offered reprieve from damnation, so he may aid a group of other equally fated/epic heroes save the world. Always under threat of returning to his own personal hell, he seeks away to shake his bonds and the metaphorical gun pressed to his back, and if possible, take down the parasitic creatures, known commonly, as gods. yeah i like LOK

Same company can shit out a hundred Laura Croft games but they cannot finish this damn story

We are at a point now where those failed attempts at a proper revival are long behind us, allowing us to cleanse our pallets from their awful taste like foul blood to a vampire. Now is the time to bring it back. Kain's journey is not over yet. The Elder God still has plans for him. Will Kain save Nosgoth in the end? Or let it rot? What of the Hylden? What of Raziel?

I played the whole series, but never beaten the final boss, so I do not know how the story ends and I never looked it up in hopes one day I will try again.. This music tells me the time for that is coming up now, 20 years later

knowing what we do now Kain's face when Raziel showed him his wings wasn't one of jealousy or rage at all more like a surprise (which of course makes sense) Looking back the thoughts running through must have been wild...to realize that now was the time to make his play at fate. We see in the later games he genuinely respected dare I say admired Raziel so in the moment condemning Raziel must have been insanely difficult for him....but than to turn around and "play his role" so that he could have Raziel to be motivated enough to do what he needed to to be ready and strong enough to play his role as well is crazy

Thanks for uploading this gem. I am glad they havent defiled this story with forced remakes. It would take a hardcore fan base to properly finish this.. this, Religion. Yeah, Im gona call it that.

What I really like about this theme is that it started as a track in Kurt Harland's InSoc album. To have something so iconic have a life before what we often associate it to is pretty cool to me. Incidently I adore Dont Be Afraid (the album). One of my favourites of all time. I'd love to be able to listen to this track before I associated it with LoK though and see what sort of impact it would have.

Kain just rolls up on the castle from Resident Evil Village like a pimp with this song blasting from 20 miles away. He has his lieutenants right behind him and a giant procession in front. Knocks on the door and says, "We're here for your daughters... Yes, we KNOW they're vampires... Because my sons need BITCHES!!"

Ok hear me out... kain can talk to raziel in the sword but as the final game goes on raziel gets quieter and muted by the finale.
