Cradle Of Filth just keep releasing masterpiece after masterpiece. I found this album in a charity shop and bought it for the hell of it. Didn't give it much thought. It was this song that got my interest and made me spend more time with the whole album. It's a gateway song. Not even close to their best work, but a good siren song to lure the unsuspecting in. I now own everything they have released. In my top ten favourite bands. I listen to so much music that I started needing more complex and challenging music to keep me interested. They provide exactly that. My favourite album Is 'Dusk And Her Embrace'. The two considered their best by consensus are 'Midian' and 'Cruelty and the Beast'. Cruelty has the songs 'Bathory Aria' and 'Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids' which are epic songs with amazing lyrics.

Great reaction again! I was curious how you would like their music (this is one of their softer songs). I’m not a big Cradle of Filth fan but I enjoy their music. The first thing I thought when you mentioned you like the vampire / goth esthetics and sound was ‘oh she needs to check out Type O’Negative!’. Regarding pitch, Dani Filth actually did have some troubles with his voice a while back (like, 10+ years back, but still, after Nymphetamine, so around or after the time this song was released). But he got a dedicated vocal coach and worked on his technique and nowadays his voice, especially live, isn't exactly what it was on their first albums from around the turn of the millenium, but it's much more sustainable, and still really awesome and unique!

Thanks for this tidbit! I didn't know that about him. Correlates with at least two (prolly more) vocalists I respect tremendously, that made that choice for live performance, as an (intelligent) way of preserving their beautiful voices: Maynard of Tool and Mikael of Opeth. There is also, especially in the case of Mikael, a move away from the energies they worked through in cathartic ways, and felt the desire to move on to more melodic (and sometimes less aggressive, but never boring) works.

As a general rule, there is no such thing as Symphonic Black Metal. If you like Dimmu Borgir, and their ilk, that's your prerogative, but they are not Black Metal. Just because a generic symphonic band has tremolo picking, harsh vocals, and bad corpse paint, doesn't make them Black Metal.

My first experience with Cradle Of Filth came via a Goth/metal girl I used to hang out with ‘round here. We met before I moved back to the area, then continued once I found a place. One day she brought me some burned CDs, as they were still in use then. Among them was a Cradle Of Filth album, the name of which I never made note of. But I liked the tracks enough to go find my own copies. I came across a double album compilation and bought it. After some time I grew to like the first disc a lot. Because to me each track sounded like its own little horror movie, and I used to be big into those. I also have some background in both metal and Goth, so I suppose all of that set me up nicely to enjoy their brand of Gothic-style extreme metal. Though this tune is more like a radio-friendly version of their songwriting. That said, it’s a great and sensible intro to the band before you might sample some of their more hardcore material. Either way they have lots of strong, heavy compositions to choose from. Other groups I would recommend would be Norway’s Dimmu Borgir, black metal with actual orchestral parts, harsh vocals plus clean singing; and New York’s Type O Negative, heavy Gothic/doom metal with especially low male lead vocals. I would consider these some of the top acts in their different sub-genres.

Another great song is Dracula from Iced Earth, its based on the classic novel by Bramm Stoker

This comment was CENSORED by YT(!), so another take... You want to know what genre they are? Nowadays, I would say it is goth metal, but for sure they come from a very own version of black metal. Very well-made extreme metal right from the start. The lyrics of Dani Filth are always extraordinarily well-made, unique. He called the genre "vampire metal" in the beginning, if you want to know what they come from, you might watch one of the probably most notoriously shocking music videos of the 90s in the uncensored version. (The one with the introduction of Dany Filth in the beginning, where he fantasizes about killing the pope and explains that they used nearly 100 gallons of blood for the video and have all the bells and whistles for an offending video, like ... yepp ...): Cradle of Filth: From the Cradle to Enslave kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9SSgsuErLzGgps.html I guarantee you, after watching this video, you will never see a violin the same way as before. (People who watched it will instantly know what I mean!) Honestly, this is one of the best and most disturbing metal videos of all times, and it instantly made me a fan of them. They deserve a deeper look into their early work. They were always excellent.

Your reaction review is awesome! I could listen to you talk all day. I like that, coming from a very different musical discipline, you can appreciate the wonderful musical quality that COF belches out with poetic harmony. It actually takes a musician to appreciate a band like this. My parents are not musically inclined and broke my COF CD when I was in highschool, which just made me wanna listen to it even more. They have like 3 or so albums that tell an elaborate story about the countess Elizbet Bathory who allegedly bathed in virgin blood and embraces this as truth, although it was a bunch of misogynistic Aristocrats that made false accusations because they didn't like a woman having that much power in Bulgaria, as she came into it due to the death of her husband. If you're curious about their old school sound, I'd recommend "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids" or "Bathory Aria". Though, to be honest, I'd absolutely love seeing you react to Rainer Landfermann ("Langsam, hinter's Licht"), especially if you’re up for something a bit unsettling and a bit of an assault on the senses. And I’d provide you with translations of the lyrics! That said, when you mentioned wanting to be able to do extreme metal vocals I immediately imagined you adding them to "I Never" or "Break of the Dawn" and I cannot decide if that would be hilarious or atrocious.

I didn't hear about Cradle of Filth until 2015.. the first bands I heard that I considered goth were, Xandria songs like Forevermore, Ravenheart,, eversleeping, more bands like Epica, Sirenia, Within Temptation, Lacuna coil, Theatre of Tragedy.

Well goth isn't really metal. It's a sub genre of punk with the theme of dark poetry. I mean Edgar Allen poe is arguibly the father of Gothic literature. The goth style started in around the late 70s and early 80s along Souxie and the banshees and of course The Cure who invented the "Goth look". It was never really metal but just a dark version of punk.

@@SoulSingerDiscovers Hahahaha. Oh, well, it was an MTV financed movie, it was totally clear, that the critics are trashing it. Nevertheless, I was floored that Jonathan Davis does a "serious" solo thing in a different direction, so I would have watched it for that alone! 🙂

I know you are just starting your metal vocals journey, but when you get a bit more used to the growls, please check out Will Ramos from the band Lorna Shore. There is a video from last year, where he visits the University of Utah Center of Vocology - they stuck a camera down his throat and see what's happening when he uses different vocal techniques.(it's gross, but fascinating) ..but yeah, listen to their songs first. I recommend To the Hellfire.

Honestly, if you have a soft spot for cheesy horror, you should just do yourself a favor and listen to more Cradle just for the sake of it, reaction video or not. They channel the whole Hammer film horror and cheesy 80s horror so well. Not their biggest fan by far, but I do appreciate them for how they unapologetically have so much fun with that stuff and make some pretty amazing music. Also, Dani is a fantastic vocalist and writes pretty awesome lyrics. "Cruelty and the Beast" is probably the album I'd go with.

Based on your curiosity about goth-metal and your teenage love of cheesy horror/vampire stuff (which I completely share), I definitely think you should give a listen to the band Type O Negative. Their singer, Peter Steele (RIP) was a truly unique voice in the metal world, and their music was a great combination of gothic romance, heavy metal, and dark comedy. I'd suggest the song "Love You To Death" as a good place to start.

So to answer your question about the relation between goths and metalheads. Keep in mind I'm talking about the waaaay-back days, so like the 80s, when I was in high school. (I'm old.) And I can only speak to the US. I'd say in the beginning we were natural enemies. I was the goth kid listening to mostly British post-punk stuff, and I hated any metal I heard. I wanted my melancholy melodies, minor keys, and sad poetic lyrics. Then again, the metal I was exposed to was pretty universally bad: mostly hair metal. I didn't start giving metal a chance until the end of my college days when my friends played the Black album, and I made a deep dive into Metallica's back catalog and became a big fan. But that was it for me--until Tool. Basically, up until recently, I liked a lot of hard-edged alternative that verged onto metal (like Disturbed), but few actual metal bands besides Tool and Metallica. Then I married a metalhead. And I was STILL resistant. Then I discovered Nightwish. I think the bottom line is that the crossover is MUCH bigger between the goths and metalheads nowadays, partly because there are now a LOT of bands that fall somewhere between. And both my husband and I were a little "too cool for school" back in the day and so resisted music that was different than what we liked. But he's helping me learn to like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest and a few other bands. And he's getting into Tool. You learn to like more stuff as you get older. So a marriage that was a divided house can stand. As long as you give the other's music a chance.

I’d recommend trying out “archives of an enchanted philosophy” by “Bishop Of Hexen” it’s a concept album based on story the band made up, and lyrically each song continues the previous, overall it was masterfully written and it is also surprisingly lesser known, it’s from the late 90’s so I presume they were overshadowed by the likes of great bands like cradle of filth and dimmu borgir, anyway, If you do check ‘em out hope you enjoy

People who react to this song, do not react to the real cradle of filth. I see most react to this song, and i don't get why. This is very far from there best songs they have made. I usual think it's a song for those who don't really want to get into cradle of filth. Cruelty and the beast is there best album, together with dusk and her embrace. Listen to songs from those to really hear what Danny can do. And his writing on these albums is so much better.
