I think this means Jinjer's perennial live is next. Not your "typical" live stadium sound to be sure. And it's the last song of their show. I was the drummer in metal shows in the 90's and by the final song, I was ready for a stretcher and an ambulance, and for them to be this for their last song of the show to me is totally amazing!

I forgot something: what is fascinating for me is that the guys first write the music without tati being there, she knows nothing, then she gets the finished songs, which are not mainstream :-)), then tati first writes the lyrics in russian and then translates them into English, and these lyrics are sometimes very lyrical...as a musician, i can't understand how it works...

It seems like Jinjer has emerged as one of the leading metal bands of this era, and I think they totally deserve to be. They’re obviously all quite talented and skilled- the entire group can shine. And what you described as your reaction to “Pisces” is of course universal across the board- people in shock, exasperated, wondering how can she possibly do that, or even if it’s actually her in the first place. But personally I love metal vocalists who are multi-faceted like that. Developing different voices or even modes is so cool. I consider myself a self-taught amateur vocalist, who can do melodic singing as well as harsh vocals. But it took me months to even begin to get those down, and my vocal journey is still ongoing.
@SoulSingerDiscovers
@SoulSingerDiscovers Жыл бұрын
That’s pretty cool Matthew! Tbh I feel like any vocal journey is a long winded one if the vocalist actually cares about their craft. Im still learning and I consider myself a professional, and someone that is very well versed as a singer. Tatiana has definitely been part of my gateway into harsher vocals, not just for the mix of contemporary but for hearing harsh vocals that really resonate with me. An outstanding band too! 😊
@matthewgoodA1206
@matthewgoodA1206 Жыл бұрын
Oh, totally. I’ve actually been doing amateur vocal work for over 20 years, but it was quite the slow start, constantly toying with my voice to figure things out. Emulating some of the singers in my music collection. The harsh metal vocals came later. And I’ve discovered different aspects of my voice in various ways. So you’re right, it’s an extended process. As my father once said, when we were discussing well-known artists, “Nobody starts out great.” You have to begin at the bottom and then work to ascend over time.

I don’t know what the best word to describe it would be but I think Jinjer is attracting a lot of recognition from folks outside of the metal community. That level of chops demands respect from all but the most jaded. I think they've had an impact on attitudes and respect for metal in general and harsh vocals in particular within the mainstream music community. I don't know if we'd have seen for example Harper on AGT if Pisces hadn't had such an impact, for example.

I love how you approach Jinjer. Welcome to the rabbit hole, part 2. I came to them very early, and they never get boring. The best song was always the next one. If I should name the best discovery of a band for me in the last 15 yrs, Jinjer would be it. And there is a lot of great bands out there. If you wanna go down that rabbit hole, I would say GO FOR IT. (And I would for sure not be mad about waiting for all other requested bands that I love.) I have yet to hear a bad song from them. Love them to death. Seriously. They never fail to surprise me whenever something new gets released. They constantly evolve and I grow with them. Next one? HOME BACK. Masterpiece official video. You will love it, too. Absolutely sure about that. Or something from the Kiev concert. OR ...f*ck, pick any official video. I love them all. I am very happy you came back to them so soon. Even more happy, that you like this song and that you can imagine reacting to more of them. Because: Every song is different, every song has something unique to offer. And we are just at the surface of what genres they can mix together. They are a perfect representation of where contemporary progressive music stands. They don't even speak of "metal" anymore, because they combine so many other elements with it. They are far from the narrowing metalcore sounds, they are something on their own. Fantastic to witness since many years. I am really, really happy about the continuation of your Jinjer journey. Have a great new week, keep on making me smile and all the best, my dear dudette!😎❤🤌

Jinjer has amazing talent, but also the uncanny ability to write and play what they want. Sure, they can thrash out some metal, metalcore, etc - but they can also throw in so many other genres and elements, that the totality of their composition is just inspiring. Tatiana is the face of the band because of her role as singer/performer, but there is just not a weakness in any part of their music. Seriously, people say there isn't a bad Jinjer song, and they are correct. I haven't been listening too long, only a few years, but they give me hope that the metal community is alive and kicking and ever evolving - for the better. Jinjer is the one of the best modern prog metal band for sure. Considering they are younger than Mastodon, Opeth, Meshuggah, Gojira and Tool they could be stated as a new wave of prog metal or as a future of this subgenre (although who knows what will hapens in the future). But of course there're lots of other subgenres of metal which can't be represented by Jinjer because they have nothing to do with their music (except heaviness). Few days ago Jinjer's bassist Eugene said something like - we are moving our music forward continiously just because we are boring to play the same music. It means Jinjer doesn't make similar music even if it's succesfull. They are progressive because they are looking for the progress. That's the point which could be the guide for all other metal bands (and nonmetal as well).

I am not sure there's any single band to describe modern metal, but "to hell with genres" seems to be one of the themes for this corner of metal. See for example Sleep Token. "Life is dark. Life is bright. Life is ugly. Life is beautiful. Don't get lost in genres, they'll only disorientate you. Music is for everyone." -Vessel 2017 Picking different genres for different parts of the song depending on what kind of feelings you want to evoke is so bloody effective in telling a story.

The _point_ of genres is to inform someone else what direction they can expect. Saying "they are their own subgenre" is utterly pointless. Yes, Jinjer is Jinjer, obviously, and, no, a genre cannot accurately describe them, once again obviously, as that is true with pretty much every other good band out there, but saying they're an extreme variation of Prog Metal is a pretty good start.... which is all genres are supposed to do.

Since discovering Jinjer last year, I have enjoyed my slow journey through their work. They were my first concert in “Fuck, I’m Old” years. I’m seeing them in July in Charlotte and then in September in Myrtle Beach. “Teacher, Teacher” is my favorite song by them because it is such a representation of the band’s style. Maybe my favorite part is how she created the most beautiful “Fuck You!” with the “I Smile To You” line. For suggestions, I’m sure people have recommended the Wacken Live Air performance of “Perennial.” It’s a great song but this performance is amazing and illustrates what you were talking about with the difference between a “singer” and a “performer.” While “Pisces” was the song that got me interested in them(I have to avoided saying that it “hooked me.”), the song that made me say “I get it” was the official live performance of “Bad Water.” Before it, I couldn’t get into other songs of theirs that I checked out. As soon as I heard this one, what was keeping from enjoying them was what I love about them.

Hey Melisa, glad you're enjoying your Jinjer experience. Like many have already said, there is most definitely a Prog Metal element to Jinjer and actually a comparison to Opeth wouldn't be to out of the dark. All 4 members are Opeth fans and Tatiana has said her growl voice was heavily influenced by Mikael Akerfeld's growl voice. As for the light and shade elements you mentioned at the end of your video.... that has always been a part of Metal even going back to Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi (Sabbath's legendary guitarist and the man who has more to do with how Metal sounds today than anybody else) always made sure there were soft acoustic bits on Sabbath Albums so that when that really heavy wall of sound did kick in, it would feel oh so much more HEAVY!

I don't think Jinjer is a good or bad representation of where modern metal is going, because they represent such a small subset of the ridiculously wide range of what metal is. Metal as a whole is very fractious, and what's good for one sub genre, may not be very welcome as a representation of another. Jinjer's an incredible band, but I doubt I'd recommend them as an introduction to Doom or Symphonic Black Metals, respectively.

Jinjer is fairly solidly in the prog metal genre. If i were to pick a favourite in the prog side of metal it would easily be Meshuggah, but Jinjer brings a mix of many other influences and genres in what they do unlike the more extreme prog metal band i generally prefer. I listen to Jinjer for just those things they create and the different influences. I do think that metal is becoming better over the last 5-15 years because many bands are moving away from sticking in one genre and Jinjer is really in the wave of mixing things up and i really appreciate it. Mostly because a lot of metal is so formulaic and predictable it is actually dull. Like literally 99.99% of all power metal or the more old school oriented genres.... Frankly music is better now than it used to be especially in metal.

Not just Tati though, any band that mix cleans and harsh vocals. However, are they a good representation of modern metal? Perhaps. Hmm... No, I wouldn't say Jinjer is typical of modern metal at all. They're a rare blend of raw talent, humility, an enormous range of influences across all genres of music, and a history of hardship and strife of the type that can breed something much more 'real' than most. There's nothing artificial or phoned in or sterile about them. They aren't flawlessly trained conservatory musicians (the drummer, Vlad, _was_ conservatory trained, but on Piano. The others are all just self-taught). They learned on the road, fleeing from war, singing for their supper and shelter, and to establish themselves in Kiev once they arrived. When people like that sit down to write a song, it's kind of a different thing than when someone more... shall we say privileged, to borrow an overused buzzword?-does the same. I'm not sure if Jinjer could write a nothingburger of a phoned-in song if they _wanted_ to. To me, it feels more like they're having to hold back the torrents of meaning and creativity inside to curate the best parts of it, rather than struggling to overcome writer's block and doodling until they find an earworm, if that makes sense? There are other bands today that are doing very creative, very cool stuff, but there's nobody like Jinjer. I think they're one of the most original, deep, and powerful metal bands performing today, maybe even the very top, and I think we're only starting to see their rise.

My favorite track of theirs is Vortex, it has no repeating parts like Bohemian Rhapsody, just a continuous journey... For you though, she had a 1 take vocal performance for the track Judgement and Punishment, and then they have a great live performance for the song Perennial... For focusing on her voice I think those might be the best 2... Oh and her guest vocals on Twelve Foot Ninja's over and out has her harmonizing with a great male vocalist

0:26 - Greetings from a portuguese viewer (and Jinjer fan) who had to get used to over 30ºC in March, April or October and over 40ºC in the Summer for the last 20 years. You better get used to those types of temperatures over there because it's only going to get worse. I used to consider 30ºC very hot, now my heat "intolerance" level has gone up from 30ºC to 37ºC. It's very worrying to realise how I've adapted to deal with temperatures up to 37ºC as if I was dealing with temperatures between 25 and 30ºC. 😟 13:25 - I don't think they put all that thought into what they do in their songs, at least not deliberately. One thing I've come to learn about Jinjer since I discovered them 7 years ago was that the only "rule" they have is "this must sound good to us because we have to enjoy playing it live", especially since Vlad (the drummer) joined the band. They never set out to create anything only to please the fans or because they felt they should follow a path that would give them instant success. Their first album after being signed by Napalm Records (King of Everything, where Pisces comes from) was kind of overdone in terms of audio production, no wonder they re-recorded Pisces with Vlad because he gave the song the soul and the groove it lacked originally. That album made them quickly realise that they couldn't put things in the songs that they wouldn't be able to reproduce themselves live, so the following release, the Micro EP, was much more raw and less embellished and that put off a lot of the more conventional metalheads who thought they were going to follow the previous album's formula. That trend continued in the following releases, Macro and Wallflowers, and although they might have lost quite a bit more of the "fans" I mentioned before with those two albums, the fans they gained by being themselves and not follow any set formulas were more than the ones they lost. 🙂

I think I'm too old for mosh pits but there are also circle pits where everyone runs in a circle which and you just have to keep up. You see those in Europe mostly. Being of an older generation and as a musician who played multiple styles including Jazz, I can't tell you if Jinjer by themselves represent the future of metal or what metal should be but I do know I liker them because they inject so many other styles into their music and they are talented enough to play them right not as musicians who heard one jazz or blues song and think they know how it goes.

Hi there! To answer your question at the end, IMO there is no 'good' representation of modern Metal music, really. Metal by definition has no boundaries, no rules, and no limitations. It always pushes the limits, exploring new grounds and enjoy complete freedom, yet building up on the rich tradition of the forefathers. I guess, as any Metal fan grows older, he will find at some point that it is going too far. But some others will pick it up and continue the journey. Metal is forever. It exists in the past, present and future.

I discovered your channel tonight through this reaction to, Jinjer, I was so impressed that I subscribed. I'm a big fan of many different genres of music so, I appreciate lots of things. I highly recommend that you listen to (and hopefully react to) a few other Jinjer tracks, for you I feel that the 'must do' ones are; 'Perennial' live at Wacken Open Air Festival from 2019, this gives you a true view of the band in a truly live setting; 'Judgement (and Punishment)' Tatiana's one-take vocal version, this is good because you get a close up view of Tatiana as she is singing so you can clearly see her technique in detail; and 'Home Back' the official music video, this is a very personal song for the band as it's a protest against the invasion of the Ukraine by Russian troops in 2017 of the area of the Ukraine which they're from, the reason why I recommend this in particular is there's part of the song which as a Soul and Jazz singer you'll really appreciate.

I think you would also really enjoy Home Back. It is incredibly relevant to current events in Ukraine, where they are from, and there is a very jazzy breakdown in the middle of the song where Tatiana goes full Ella Fitzgerald. It is stunning. Also, you'd do fine in a pit. Pit etiquette is that if someone goes down, a gap is created around them, and they are either helped up, or helped out of the pit. No exceptions. If someone violates this unspoken rule, they are ejected from the pit.

@@SoulSingerDiscovers It is deeply cathartic. I have been accidentally (maybe?) punched in the face and not known where it's coming from though, so there's also that. The metal community as a whole is incredibly inclusive and welcoming, and is, in my experience, the warmest and most positive community in music at shows. That said, genre snobs can rival those found in art and fusion jazz circles.

I've performed as both a funk/soul vocalist and a metal vocalist. If you have the control to belt out soul music, you should be able to get the metal growls down pretty easily once you have the right technique and figure out how to use the throat and tongue correctly. The hardest part is the breath control, which is important to protect the vocal chords, and if you have experience with the big powerful soul belts and sustains this should come pretty naturally if you get the rest down. I'm also really excited to see another soul singer want to branch out into growling, go for it. You'll enjoy the reactions from people.

MARC!!! Tell me all your words! Thank you for this comment. I definitely want to learn more about metal vocals, I have experimented a little myself and I weirdly feel like some of the mechanics are intuitive to me and then others are totally alien. Which is so strange! How did you transition to metal or was did metal come first? Did you take guidance or training or both? URGH! So many questions, as I have yet to meet someone who has done both! ❤️

Yes! They do double track. The recorded version of Pisces has Tati double tracked in that final verse where she flips into the clean belt (doubled with the growl). While I agree that the doubling can be nice, in that specific instance, I prefer the video version with out the doubling right there (it is in other parts BTW). But the extra punch hearing her clean belt right after a growl and then jump back into a (doubled) growl just fits the dichotomy of the song better, in my opinion. I also love the differentiation between a singer and a performer. Tati can sing, sure but she is a true performer.

Mosh pits tend to be surprisingly friendly and wholesome. It seems violent when it's really more just kinetic energy being released. There's some bumper cars, but it's very rare you get get an a-hole that's genuinely trying to hurt anyone, and even when/if that happens others will usually step in to stop them and help anyone that gets hurt. Metal audiences in general are consistently the nicest audiences, and I've been to audiences for a wide variety of genres. Are Jinjer a good representation of modern metal? Well, I'd say there aren't really any good representatives just because of how diverse and fragmented metal has become. I think Jinjer are a good representation of one (or a few) popular strains of metal, especially the combination of djent and metalcore, with some affinities with bands like Periphery and Protest the Hero, all of which owe a ton to Meshuggah (who invented "djent").

The Pit IS a Feral thing, but it is a collective experience. Think school of piranha, but the prey is Angst, Rage, and Sadness. Once you're in the Metal wold, you just call it The Pit, The Pit is the Object, Mosh is usually a verb, but can also be a noun. However, one can Mosh without being in a Pit. Some specify a "Circle" Pit: These people are called Douches, or in the U.K. Wankers. There is an etiquette, but mostly, people care for each other and severe injury is much less than one sees in the stands at the average Football Match. Go with someone you know, who has experience. Until you get the hang of it, keep your forearms up like a Thai Boxer. You'll do fine. Happy Stomping.

I think , Jinjer "I Speak Astronomy" , there is a very good example of her breath control in that one as well as Perennial. If you want some Reggae do the One Take Vocal of Judgment and Punishment. If you want to see how low she goes, live version of Whose Gonna be the One. You'll never run into the same kind of song twice with them. You could do one a week and fill a few months of their content. Jinjer, is their OWN thing. They are a good representation of Progressive Metal, but they just feel like their own thing.

I grew up in the Mojave Desert. Summer temperatures would occasionally kiss 50°, but often hovered in the mid 40°'s. We were not far from the hottest place on Earth, Death Valley. I once, personally experienced a Summer, while stationed near Joshua Tree California, with The American Marine Corps, where we kissed 56°c. 3 days in a row. That was 0.6° shy of the world record, at the time. They say it was a dry heat, but once you pass 40, well.....Kilns and Pizza Ovens are also dry heat. I now live in Canada. While warmer than Scotland, in Summer, is much more suited to my pasty British/Celtic ars.... ancestry.

to the point of wall of sound vs. pulled back and dynamic intricate stuff. in my opionion there is a place for both, sometimes you just need to get blasted in the face with a wall of sound and then there is times, especially if you take your time to really LISTEN to the music, where the more dynamic und complex/intricate stuff hits just the spot. So i think most metalheads can appreciate both of those worlds.

Jinjer is an awesome band, since you like looking so much at the vocals with a wide range, and since you have looked at Nightwish, I would recommend Beast in Black, they are pretty impressive and their song Blind and Frozen is a very good place to start followed by From Hell with Love (truth be said all their songs are good but if you really want a good representation start with those 2). They certainly are willing to not to limit themselves to 1 style of music. The lead singer, Yannis Papadopoulos has an insane range, definitely on par with Tati, different, but on par and even has vocal cover of Nightwish's Ghost love Score that gives Floor a run for her money.
