* takes bong hit * ...you know, you really have to cut up the video according to the golden ratio and rearrange the pieces so they match the fibonacci series. If you play the result in reverse at the same time as the original video the true cosmic message will become clear. It's really the only way to properly watch this video.

Really well done good job. Something to have in mind about Tool is that a huge part of their tone is actually the bass that is pretty aggressive and complements perfectly the low gain guitar tone to sound huge together. Similar to a heavily influenced by them band like Chevelle. ( I’d love you to also try to get Chevelle Mark’s series tone btw, imho Tool on steroids).

Sounds great! The cranked mids is definitely a core part of his tone along with the Marshall Superbass upper mid snarl but you did a great job!! Thanks once again for explaining in detail too! I actually have this identical setup at home but I dial mine a little differently. I don’t crank the mids on either amp but rather just push them slightly and also drop out the bass on the Marshall because the Diezel is providing all the low end. I’m also selling my VH2 as I now have a new VH4 and CH3 on that sounds much better to me than CH2 on the VH2. It’s difficult to explain but the VH2 sounds looser to me. I think I commented on this on your other video. The VH4 also has 2 more channels and I find myself using all of them to get different flavours.

I know pickups don't make much difference. But, I recently put in a Duncan Distortion that I heard Adam uses, and it definitely added a little bit of that Tool magic. I feel like I've gotten kinda close with my limited set up. Like you said though, I always feel like I'm using too much gain. If I lower the gain it doesn't feel like enough. There's a secret sweet spot in there somewhere that I don't think Adam will ever tell.

@@Durkheadin general i agree with you. In Adams case, his tone that made him this tone guy isnt even the tone he has anymore. Its kinda funny. His live tone is still good but its not the old Marshall les paul jb bridge pickup combo. He went to a marshall/mesa setup for undertow live, aenema he toured with marshall/mesa/diezel vh4. Then for lateralus he abandoned the mesa im pretty sure. But at any rate hes now using a duncan custom sh6 and two diezel vh4 alongside the marshall superbass. Its good but its not the thick crunchy tone that made him a big tone guy.

That was sounding great. That was really very close to the Tool sounds! Isn't it possible to produce this sound with amps that already have more midds in their sound, like the PRS Archon and the Orange 50w mk3, together with the Laney Ironheart 60w... These amps are very different, but I think this could work.🤔

I think you did great while still keeping your riffs and tones yours. Adam Jones tones are hard to dial in I have found, either I put the gain low enough to sound ok and open enough to have the clarity and cut with the big power chords on the smaller strings, but then the muted notes and low strings does not sound with enough balls, gain or compression. I found the guitar tones on the later alums sound more dry too compared to the aenima era. I think he rides his volume knob a bit on his guitar so maybe there is a bit of that too in his tones. most modern metal guitar players keep the volume dimed on their guitars.

he was using the synergy system with the vh4 module for a while but he switched back to his modified "real deal" vh4 heads just because they sound much better with the matching diezel poweramp section that makes a hughe part of the diezel trademark sound. its is also impossible to sound excact like him because his vh4 amps have all been modified several times during his career so his sound changed a bit once in a while..but espcecially the very early versions of the vh4 are an amazing amps and you should get very close to his signature sound. the newer versions sound much different by the way.. cheers 🎸🎸

Very cool and interesting video. Did you experiment with finding AJ's "clean" tone, e.g. at the beginning of Lateralus? Great tones! I can definitely hear some of the techniques on display to spotlight this amp combination. I’ve been chasing various iterations of his tone since I first heard Ænima, and have found my own happy medium using my DSL20, (surprisingly) an Orange Micro Dark, and two modelers both running in stereo - my venerable PodX3 on various combinations of recto, Diezel, and even JCM900 tones, and my new HX Stomp of course on the Daz Benzin Mega model, though occasionally changing up to MarkIV or Rockerverb tones. My 96 LP Studio was about as close to Custom as I could get, complete with ebony fingerboard, and once I swapped out for the Duncan Distortion in the bridge, I just really never want to put the guitar down. He’s a guitarist that found his own sound and his own way, without becoming one of the nameless legion of shredders. Truly unique in our modern guitar world, and a fantastic visual artist! Great work as always, and happy new year to SDS!

So, I'm going to put in my two cents - great tone, but you don't really sound like AJ at all to be totally honest. I asked my wife if she thought this sounded like Tool and she said immediately 'not at all, it's nice but it doesn't sound like Tool.' I'd say you're closer to maybe, Brent Hinds from Mastodon than Adam Jones from Tool. I think while you have the amps, the Seymour Duncan bridge pickup that Adam uses really truly is the special sauce that gives his tone the high-gain crunch. That pickup has so much gain in itself it's almost like a pre-amp boost! I use a Marshall DSL plus a VH-4 pedal and have a AJ signature Gibson with a Duncan Distortion SH-6 in the bridge and the tone is very very close. I also use the exact same strings as he does, Ernie Ball Paradigm top heavy skinny bottoms. I used to run a different Gibson with the factory pickups, burst buckers or whatever they were, I don't remember through the same rig and it was totally different. As soon as the SH-6 was running through it the sound transformed like magic to something very near to that killer tone Jones brings to the band. I have a PRS with aSH-6 in the bridge and that also sounds very close but not quite as good as the Gibson but maybe that's just in my head. In my opinion 95% of a guitars sound is strings and pickups, so it makes sense to me that it's mostly in that SH-6 and the Paradigms. Also on the Marshall you want to crank the mids, Treble 3, Bass 3 or somewhere around there.
