Captain's comment about the crowd at AC/DC shows is so true. I saw them years ago and when they started playing You Shook Me it was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. The crowd went absolutely nuts. Probably the best show you will EVER see.

Saw a pub band doing AC/DC stuff (among others) the other day. The guitarist used a £199 Vintage VS6 SG copy through a Peavey Bandit 112 (about £350) and nailed the Angus Young tone VERY convincingly. You don't need to spend anywhere near a grand.

***** According to your comment, playing a Les Paul and playing a Startocaster makes no difference in tone as long as you're the one playing, did I get that correct? If so, I'd recommend you to invest in some new ears.

***** you speak of this, and these guys, as though they are some sort of magical, secret holding, mythical creatures who do un earthly things. It's music and as such has an equation, a pattern, a FORMULA, if you will...True in ANY trade or science on the planet...Any chemical equation, once written, can be duplicated, and so the SAME with music.. Once transcribed, it can be played...If you hit the right notes at the right time the guitar will play ITSELF, and requires VERY LITTLE THOUGHT PROCESS, mostly done on the RIGHT SIDE of the brain... In a WORLD full of imitators, I agree there is only ONE Toni Iommi, or Eddie Van Halen, but to suggest that they play their music as NO ONE ELSE CAN is just LUDICROUS... If you want to sound like the artist do what the artist did, same equipment, same settings, same notes, same accents and ALL that equals the SAME SOUND!! Gee, if your THEORY was true why do all the MAJOR labels have their OWN musicians called STUDIO MUSICIANS, who play OTHER peoples music on their album. It might surprise your small mind how many studio versions of black Sabbath you have listened to of Toni Iommi's songs that were PLAYED and RECORDED by a STUDIO GUITARIST!!! Learn the instrument, and the industry before trying to sound educated, or put someone else down...

***** Yes, he wants to 'sound' like Toni, not 'play' like him. When somebody is playing delta blues with a Harley Benton guitar into a cheap Line 6 amp with all EQ cranked, multiple distortion pedals on and chorus, flanger and heavy delay effects messing up with his tone, but still plays well you're not going to say ''you sound great''. What you say is ''you play well''.

just got myself a catalinbread DLS mk3, although angus i believed used no pedals except a boost maybe, the the catalinbread DLS mk3 is one of those pedals that will really give a convincing acdc tone, and best of all at bedroom levels. True acdc tone is only achieved by cranking a clean plexi hard, which is not feasible for some of us

I don't think angus uses a drive pedal...I'm pretty sure I saw a video of him talking about his rig....I think he said he uses a 100w head with a wireless system straight to his guitar....I think it's just a high volume clean tone that gets slightly gainy via the guitar volume knob
@tomomichalcak4171
@tomomichalcak4171 10 жыл бұрын
Dude, it´s Schaffer Vega Diversity Systems or shortly SVDS, made by Ken Schaffer in the 70s. It´s a wireless system, but Angus found out that it makes differences to his tone, i would say probably a clean boost sound. A great AC/DC fan and gearmaster named SoloDallas, bought the last remaining SVDS and made replicas of them about a year ago. Very soon they will be on sale. It´s got really amazing warm tone, and it´s the secret to Highway to Hell and Back In Black Angus tone. Look him up on the internet :D
@Barrygee

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Any Marshall Amp Here's the secret: Use VERY little gain. Page's tone is very clean, but his amp is very loud, which makes it sound very dirty.
@brpadington

I have a shitty old Marshall MG 50 watt combo. I hated the amp because the drive channel sounds like shit but the clean channel sounds pristine. When I played with a band I noticed that the sparkly clean channel turned into raunchy dirt at about 1 o' clock on the volume. Perfect AC/DC territory.

I know this is now 2 years old or whatever, and I'm sure this has been said before but this reminded me that Angus actually rolls down his volume control before a show, and he rolls it up to max for solos and has it about 1/2-3/4s for rhythm stuff

***** It's just not that simple. Way back in the Purple days, he used to play a specially modified Marshall Major Head, using a Treeble Booster as a pre amp. Now, if you are going for the MkIII and Rainbow tone, It gets really tricky. Mr. Blackmore had a Fender strat with a Hum cancelling system and a few other tweaks, as for the amps, same old Marshalls, altough this time, the pre amp was a tape machine used to fatten the already thin Strat sound and provide Delay effects, his IOWA tape recorder sound is not something particularly easy to imitate nowdays, when most of EQs and preamps fatten up the sound by just pushing more bass into the mix.

No disrespect, but it sounds like shit, too much distortion and clearly does not sound like AC/DC. Clean is the way to go, and as you say it's in the fingers. Chappers knows how to play guitar, no doubt about it, but play AC/DC?? He is a country mile away! Unfortunately neither of you can do a proper demo of Angus 'cos you ain't got the fingers. I'm paraphrasing this but Angus said that his tone is pretty much this: Volume all the way up, Treble at 12 o'clock, Bass at 12 o'clock, Mid at 12 o'clock, Presence all the way down. On Let There Be Rock, he used some kind of overdrive pedal, that's why his tone sounds so distorted on that record compared to his usual tone.

I don't know for sure what amp he used, and reliable info was welcome, so thanks :) I'm pretty sure it wasn't a vox if I trust only on my hearing, but I was just noodling around

I think that you could do that with a marshall sl5/dsl15/dsl40, a epiphone/cheap gibson les paul and a slash crybaby wah. Maybe even a ge7/dunlop mc401 for a leadboost.

HRacingGreen Guitar Center just had a 4th of July blowout of silver Epi SG 1966 G-400 Pros for $220; I've been wanting an SG for a while and couldn't resist at that price. The neck profile is seriously different than my norm (strats), but after a little adjustment, I love it ... and the new (coil splittable) Alnico Classic PRO stock pickups sound damned good. The earlier (pre-2012, I think) Epi SG pickups (called just "Alnico Classics") sucked: they were muddy, indistinct and had poor dynamic range. These were the pickups installed in my Epi Dot Deluxe, and they were a load of clumsy, hamfisted bullshit. The guitar simply came alive after installing a Duncan Seth Lover set and upgraded volume/tone pots. These Alnico Classic PROs are much, much better than their crappy predecessors in every single way: they sound great as-is, they aren't muddy, they capture a significant percentage of the Alnico II 57 Classic sound, and they're acceptably coil-splittable, so they are pretty damned versatile. Conclusion: with an Epi G400 1966 SG Pro and a nice loud amp, you can get pretty close to the Angus sound. I have a 100w Fender Mustang III v2 amp (I've replaced the stock Celestion speaker with an Eminence Swamp Thang), and I've heavily edited the stock AC/DC sound (the preset called Aussie Rock). I lowered the gain to about 2.2, added bass, removed treble, added "tube sag" and bias, pushed the noise gate up one notch, made the cabinet simulator a 4x12 Marshall, and then added an overdrive that I could toggle with the push of a button. Instant Angus, both pre-Back in Black (without the overdrive) and post- (with the overdrive). And the cool thing is, I don't have to crank the amp up over 5 to get every single smidgen of that AC/DC sound I'm looking for.

Have you heard of the Schaefer Replica system by SoloDallas? It comes in a tower and pedal forms. Recreates Angus Young's clean tone from the early Albums through Back in Black. If you haven't, check it or and please send me a link when you do. :-) You guys are fantastic! Keep up the fun....we all love the banter on this end. Cheers!

you know that angus young is playing on the clean channel? thumbs up if you didn't! he plays on a tube amp (obviously) and just turns up the volume so it distorts. and the other part of the tone is just the way he picks, hard and soft. you can get very close to the tone by turning up the gain, but backing the volume on the guitar.

The key to Cannibal Corpse was the amp they used in the beginning. They used a Crate Shockwave stack. They are a 300 watt(yes, 300) head and 4x12 cabs. Luckily they are cheap, unfortunately hard to find for sale. Most people hang on to them...

For the latest Jimm Page sound, well, its not easy, he has so many kind of tones on houses of the holy, physical grafitti, presence and coda... But for the led zeppelin I, you'll be good to go with a telecaster, any vox, marshall or fender cheap amp and a decent fuzz (london if you can find it). For a classic live sound, you must look for a Catalinbread RAH.
