Brian shares his story about developing hyperacusis and provides a warning against activities and certain therapies recommended by his medical providers that worsened his symptoms. He suffers from the even more rare form of hyperacusis called noxacusis, also known as pain hyperacusis. He offers insight, encouragement and describes how he has changed his life to live with it.

Amazing, thanks, can certainly relate to all of this, not least the fact that yes it can get worse and that people don’t realise just how bad it is when it’s severe.

Thanks for sharing I totally identify I also notice bad weather magnifies all of it . I actually can get seizure like reactions From certain sounds and it does take hours to recover from 🫤 my blood pressure goes up in certain environments . Hardest part is def the isolation having to find a new path to experience your life in solitude . Stay strong ❤❤❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I know my friend what you suffer because I suffer the same from 11 years now, worsening continuously. Even my voice is now painful. The only way we have is to stay in the silence, try to avoid setbacks, and move forward in our life. To be positive, some researchers, especially in the US (Dr Megan Wood team for example, Johns Hopkins University), progress in understanting the illness. We just have to wait and share our knowledge (I'm European). Take care man ;-)

I can relate to this . I too had such bad hyperacusis...I made a list of what caused me pain. MOST Sounds perceived amplified by 10 times as well Running water in shower, sink and in pipes as well. Air passing through ventilation systems ... Refrigerator ... Voices...especially female or very low voices The S consonant stabbed my ears far worse. Automobiles Television and radio Squealing brakes Birds Silverware pots and pans Crushing plastic bags sounded like a crackling fire Fluorescent lights Gas pipe lines Shopping carriages sqeaking wheels Etc...Etc..Etc... What worked Relaxation techniques...very soft sound therapies that I created for myself...I also used soft rain sound while sleeping. If I used anything too loud ...my tinnitus would spike. I also had a very bad case of misophonoa which led me to hate every mouth sound including chewing food..gum snapping..lip smacking . I would get furious and or sick from these sounds. Thankfully within 5 years I beat all of this .

I can sooooo relate to everything you say. I am currently in crisis because of it. "Normal" people just think we are mad/bi-polar/child haters etc etc etc. It is real and a living nightmare. I'm 67 and have had it almost all my life but it is getting so much worse lately. I have already moved home 33 times to get away from noise. I now would rather be totally deaf

Hi Brian, I'm not really sure if I have the samething, I can be in my home with no earplug and I don't really have pain when I ear directly something but if I'm somewhere with a lot of noise, i can have a really big disconfort in my two ears for a long time, I have this since i'm 25 (now 27) and it's just getting worse. At the beggining I was able to go to restaurent but right now I cant do anything. TRT treatment look to work on people with hyperacusis but not with pain but I'm not sure where I am right now. Let me know if at the beggining it was like me. Thank you guys! I don't have any hope for a treatment, it look like we need another 10 000years before finding a real cure lol. It's just sad to have this at this age, I feel like i'm ready to end my life because i cant do the things that I like ...

One misconception is that there is Permanent damage to the inner ear hair folicles. Not true. I believe these very hairs can get traumatized but over time can regain their normal function . How else can I recover from the same excruciating condition?

@@symbolistartist This was discussed a lot in Phoenix Rising ME/CFS community forum. Most probably this is the root cause for me tol since i havent had any acoustic trauma. Its been 5 months im in this. It got better to the degree where i go out without pain. But the pain starts when i talk. Very interesting and weird. What about yours?
