Knowing which sounds to choose when producing music is half the battle. Sound selection can truly make or break your mix. If you’re experimenting with new genres and stepping outside your comfort zone, it can be easy to get lost in the sauce. Getting used to different frequency sounds takes time, but learning what exists in the frequency spectrum will help you understand which sounds actually sound good.

Great video.This is the one of the best things one can do as a producer.I would add, save the sounds as a kit, so you can reuse anytime you want to write a song in the same vibe.

Great video! Thank you Isabelle. The one thing I would say when using reference tracks is being mindful and intentional with giving the sound your own twist. Once you nail a reference, explore different things. This is what helps you create something more authentic.

This video was great. I've done this subconsciously, but never studied a track by breaking out the frequencies like that. Does anyone else feel like they are cheating when they "refer" to sounds from an inspiration track and use similar layers? Somehow the idea of doing this more formally leaves me with that feeling, but at the same time I'm getting frustrated with my own abilities at choosing sounds 😆 Maybe this will make it faster

I didn't watch this when it first came out. "BAH! I know how to select my sounds!" I ususally go by feel. But I'm glad I did watch this. It gives me a process to follow if I ever branch out into a different genre. Today I made a jazzhob, R&B type beat. A bit left field for me. And now this added understanding gives me another tool to use. Also, fun fact: I used a techno drum shuffle in my jazzhop beat. Surprisingly...it worked pretty well, especially slowed to ~ 90BPM from its original ~130

Thanks for the video. I bounced here from my Landr acct. It's a good concept to bear in mind. I tend to start a song thinking about how the band is set up. Bass, guitar, drums. And the style of player. Guitar could be The Edge or Eddy VH. Then do I use strings or a brass section? Maybe a synth player. So it seems that this way also keeps the track in genre. No rogue players crashing the session.

I've never started making a beat by listening to a reference track first,so this is new to me. I do agree that the sound selection is really important and it's something I need to improve. A lot of times I end having to switch kicks even after the master. And it's time consuming and very ineficient

If you choose similar sounds to the reference track, the sounds will be almost mixed, that’s the point of this video.

Do you have any tips for making the comparison to the reference track "fair"? Like, the reference track is already beautifully mixed and mastered, so the sounds sound different than the raw recordings/samples.

And yet you still sound very simple. There is depth in the reference, the music sounds complete and full. I've been doing what you do for years, but the result is always simple and doesn't sound professional. Here's the main question. All stages of mixing, mastering I studied and I am still studying, but I can't achieve a quality sound of reference. And I can't find it on the internet. It's a vicious circle

Takes a while for me to fully understand it and stop trying to glue sounds that don`t fully match with each other. Gets kinda hard to *mix* it when you have a lot of that sounds. The biggest problem for me was when I understood this fundamental thing, but get so attached and used to my sounds in my first album songs, that I could not imagine any other in their place. And trying to make this sound as I want - still a hell challenge for me. But at least new instrumentals sound so much better with 10x less time spend on it (which is cool, but depressing at the same time to release album that you spend 6 years and it sounds worse than my demos from yesterday😑)

I'd say learn sound design and how to manipulate the samples you have. Also you can find sounds for free on KZfaq to download and make your own

1. I'm not even trying to follow a specific genre :( 2. I don't even know how to describe sounds 3. You're doing complex stuff like analyzing EQ This definitely isn't for beginners like me...

If you're not trying to make a specific genre, you could try the tips in the video with music that you like. That will still help you develop your intuition for what sounds work with other sounds. There are also many videos on how to use EQs for beginners. As for learning how to describe sounds, you might benefit from listening or watching other more experienced music producers describe sounds, and use their descriptions as reference points. Then you can, on your own, practice labeling sounds you hear in music according to their texture (soft and quiet, Harsh and loud, plucky, pulsating, etc.) I hope this helps you.
