Soundcraft Spirit 8 (16/8/2) Mixing Console Restoration - Clean, Repair & Rebuild (eBay Pickup)

7 жыл бұрынIn this video I restore the favorite mixer I own and current workhorse, A 1990 Soundcraft Spirit 8 (16 channel) pro audio mixing desk that I picked up on eBay in a bad, neglected condition. The unit is EX-Hire and had been sat in a warehouse unused for some time as a user lost the power supply, or so I was told.
I filmed the entire restoration process from the day I got my hands on it through to very recently where I'm actively using the console on most of my gigs at events with live bands.
This video was shot over some few months while I was also studying at University and working. In between writing essays and doing the practical work I worked on this console with any time I got, where possible.
The mixer is made up of 16 mono channels and 4 stereo channels, These can be routed into the 8 groups and then the 2 masters for left and right. There are also two additional mix matrix master outputs. The console was manufactured in or around 1990.
The desk had been entirely neglected when I got it and spent a long time gathering dust and filth in a lockup somewhere. Been bits of rust and dirt had gathered over the mixing surface and inside the chassis too from where the desk may have caught some damps.
I completely tear down the mixer to every single part - the channel scrips, cables and screws then thoroughly clean every piece before re-building it up and repairing any faults found along the way or replacing parts until I reached a fully working state.
I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it. I no doubt some people will probably say I spent too much time and effort on this desk but quite frankly I don't care! It's now my favorite console to work on of every desk I own! (Sorry to my poor little previously-restored Spirit Live 4..).
It is now used very, very regularly out on gigs for both live sound and recording using a Tascam US-16x08 USB audio interface connected to the direct outputs.

Hi Nathan, I'm about to open up the same model as there are no lights in channels 9-16 as well as 3 seemingly dead channels (rather than the 1 the seller informed me about). Regarding the missing lights in the meterbridge i suspected a loose/broken ribbon cable as I know these often supply groups of 8. Oh yeah, groups 5 and 6 seem to have the same problem. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, I actually do the same job, with a spirit 8 /24. 3 years ago, I used it for a concert. All was functionnal, except 2 mono channels (1 the fader with bad contact, 1 don't work). The sound was so good and so clear, I understand Nathan when he says it is his favorite.. During these 3 years, the mixer was stored in a garage with some wetting... Now I found rust inside the panels. I put off all boards and I clean all stuff, boards, dismounting faders, cleaning their graphite boards and little contacts... this job take a long time but it is efficient. I bought 3 new faders for spare, but if I would to replace all....for around 500 $! Before cleaning, I have tested mixer and I have found new problems: 1. A buzz and little cracks appears. Maybe power unit tired? No investigation at this time.. 2. When Pfl are pressed on channels, no sound in headphones. Pfl afl led light on. On Meters, I don't see any change, probably they continue to monitor mix out.. 3. On 1 mono channel, to press pfl has no effect. Maybe the switch? 4. When I put off large ribbon bus, I endommaged some connectors. I have to repair it or buy a new ribbon cable and connectors to make a brand new one. I love this mixer, sounding so smooth and british. Any ideas for pfl? I read schematic and I suspect IC5 on Aux Master board. My skills in electronic is very basic, but components on boards are very simple to change. I have recently repaired my old folio sx, changing 072 CI was difficult because it was CMS and my eyes are not very good. Spirit 8 CI are DIL, easy desoldering / soldering. Hey Nathan! Hope you get this after some years :) Im refurbishing a studio lc 24. Looks like the PFL logic on the master bus is stuck on somehow and im scratching my head on how to fix this problem. Additionally, the first 8 channels have a very weak right side output. Any advice??

Hello, my large ribbon cable is dammaged. Some connectors went out and broke when I deplugged it. Anybody knows where I can found these connectors? Thanks for help.

Very helpful, thank you. Can I ask, please... at 19:17 you say- "...and also give the control PCB a clean-off as well. So I'm going to go ahead and do that" [cuts to dirty kitchen roll]... but what did you clean it with? Contact cleaner? Dry kitchen roll? Would be super-helpful to know. Many thanks and good work.

Thanks, Appreciate your kind comments and glad to be of help! I wiped the PCB with just dry kitchen roll in that case. However if you're having difficulty you could also use contact cleaner. Hope this helps. --Nathan

Hi Nathan, I have a Soundcraft Spirit Studio 16-8-2. It has all been working but recently, a couple of things going on, wondering if you could share any thoughts. 1. I've got a couple of faders thst need a little extra weight on the them to make it engage sound. If I strip it down, would something like this be serviceable or require replacement? 2. I have 2 channels where when you hit PFL, it doesn't make the instrument solo to the control room and headphones as it should, to make it solo, it needs the PFL on thr channel next to it to be pressed too. It's not normal but I wonder what situation can have arisen where the current channel PFL is somehow dependent on the adjacent channel. It's only happening on this single mono pair of channels. Very weird. Cheers and thanks for sharing that with patience, these desks can be brought back to their best. I'll do the same with mine at some point. Chris

I said it's a PWR header, which doesn't have anything connected to it across any of the channels / isn't used. 🙂 --Nathan

your an absolute legend mate... question... let's say I just wanted to thoroughly clean a board... not remove actual soldered components or anything... All you have to do is unscrew alotta sh1t right?.. that's literally all that is needed to clean the top and knobs and such?.. no real electronics knowledge per se? For example, I fix my car (change tranny fluid/filter, flush radiator/ change pads/calipers, change a timing belt, a ball joint in front suspension, etc) and have mechanical ability for sure... I have built a couple guitar pedals from a kit... I should be able to handle disassembling and cleaning though, right? Also, so that dodgey channel 7... that simply needed to be disassembled and cleaned, and that's it?
