It makes me so sad to hear what the kids... MY kids included... consider music. Yes, my Dad hated "my" music... but damn... it was still MUSIC... raw and seeping with talent. My kids' music is so weak... computerized... and so far from "organic."

God I miss record stores so bad...How many of you guys were record store groupies? I spent more time in the record stores just chilling with my friends, making new friends, buying new records, old records, getting introduced to up and coming new music...buying concert tickets there, having bands pop in and just jam the fuck out or purely just hang out and sign a few autographs....there was ALWAYS something going on at the record stores....My closest was Streetside and Vintage Vinyl....See not only are most of us trying to get over the fact we'll never hear the best man in Rock's voice live again, we are all still now being taken back to our youth and traveling back to the times where no fucks were given, and that was OK, in fact, that was how it was suppose to be....every time im almost to the point im accepting him being gone, Im slapped with another reminder that in fact, he IS gone, and tha's a very hard pill to swallow. RIP Chris....you got me throughmore years of my life with you in it, then with you NOT in it...."Nail in my hand,from my creator-you gave me life, now show me how to live". RIP Chris

Yeah Smashing Pumpkins are pretty fucking awesome too. Liked both bands cause they embodied the do it yourself punk/underground ethos but true to it they didn't settle for some of the regular punk cliches and incorporated different stuff, like Zeppelin and joy division. And thank god cause we the listeners got some pretty epic shit to listen to.

Ugly Truth is one of their best songs ever, and that's saying a lot. I love every version of this song, and once again it kind of defines Cornell's self/world view. Love the bridge, the lull, and the subsequent crescendo, which was their trademark sound and why I love so many of their songs.

no san diego. I was really active with bands (sorry this is blasterkid...just a different username.) but I started seeing soundgarden live...in 1989 any time they'd come near here...saw them 3 times for the louder than love tour and then 3 or 4 times on badmotorfinger...then 1 time for each of the other albums...I've seen Chris solo I think 12 times. never saw audioslave but felt like I got a lot of good shows under my belt. In 1989 or maybe 1990 they opened for Danzig of all things...last show of the Louder than Love tour and I was front row dead center smashed to the stage with Chris right there...they opened with Beyond the Wheel at that show and I mean...it was the greatest thing ever. I loved Soundgarden more than anything...Chris obviously...and I mean. I am just devastated with what's gone on. I'll never get over it. :(

P.s. Judges of Cornell's voice here: their sound is raw in this and many early shows. Cornell, in the beginning, was all power and only partly melodic; his pitch was usually imperfect (maybe owing to how loud they were). There was a marked difference between his days with Soundgarden, even when they released 'Down on the Upside', and his later voice, when he'd matured and was covering everything from 'Nothing Compares...' to 'I Will Always Love You'. He was at the height of his powers in the last few years; his tone was perfect; his pitch was on nearly all of the time; and everything coalesced beautifully. I don't think he was so mindful of his pitch and being 'in voice' until sometime around 'Euphoria Morning'. Nevertheless, he shows his range here on 'Beyond the Wheel' and it sounds relatively effortless. He was monumentally talented as a singer and songwriter, and that's why so many of his peers and following acts are paying homage to him.

This may all be true, but I far prefer his singing on the earlier records. Broader range, powerful, as imperfect as it may be technically

I love this show. At this point they are still using cheap equipment and playing in smaller venues, but they've been a band for 5 years and they've gotten really, really good. Their first album didn't turn out as well as they had planned, but they had forged ahead and were now playing a setlist of new and improved songs which ultimately began lifting them out of obscurity after Louder Than Love was released. These are my fuckin heroes, working their day jobs but living the dream of one day being professional musicians.

The only reason I can see that Soundgarden got lumped into the "Grunge" thing was that they were from Seattle. Other than that they are about as metal as you can be here. They were definitely the heaviest group outside of Alice in Chains out of the whole bunch and Chris's lyrics just put it over the top for me. For me he was definitely the best songwriter out there at the time. You can hear and see the greatness that was to come right here. Great early insight into what would shortly become a really great band. Thanks for the post.

Grunge was never really a sound..maybe drop d tuning. All the "grunge" bands sounded different from one another...rather the big four anyway. It was the flannel thing. A fashion thing. It was a complete opposite of the hair band crap we were infested with. The media just had to,call anyone wearing flannel grunge.

Chris J zG Grunge was not a new form of music at all the bands were either punk like Nirvana or heavy rock like Soundgarden. Some of these songs are influenced by Led Zep.
@SDCLFC1

Disagree. There's definitely an element of Soundgarden fusing DIY punk noise with slowed down heavy rock. Thirty years on it looks hard rock and we all go, oh yeah Sabbath, but back then hard rock sounded nothing like this. It had none of the distortion, chaos or anarchy that Soundgarden introduced. And that's why Kim scoffs at the idea of them being a Hard Rock band because they thought hard rock at the time was full of poser wankers - which it was.

SDCLFC1 a lot of punk in grunge and the background of the musicians tends to be punk it definitely was for Chris and Jason here. Same with Nirvana. I know Jerry Cantrell said he likes punk. Eddie Vedder is fan of Fugazi and Minor Threat. The so called grunge scene was just another form of punk.
@SDCLFC1

Yeah - it's another form of punk, and hard-rock and other-stuff etc but I think you can definitely point to consistent aesthetics within what were calling grunge and say that they did being to a new sound, a new category, a new way of arranging rock, punk etc. The way the guitars were used and the challenging vocal aesthetics were something very new and distinctive - now they are very familiar and so we forget that it was replacing rock/guitar/punk music that was very different.

I saw Soundgarden in New York City at the Armory back in spring 1994 and I just want to say their venue was kick ass probably the greatest I have been to besides The Cult, Metallica, and Guns n' Rose's. I'm glad I went to the show because I never had another opportunity because of sell out concerts, you have to take a chance if you can get to any show...
