If you are looking for that classic supermarket jingle then look no further. Sounds For The Supermarket was the title of a tape cassette produced by a Minnesota based Communications company in 1975. It was available by mail purchase to supermarket venders in the US and Canada. The music contains inaudible subliminal recordings that were intended to increase buyer purchasing at grocery stores. Customers were influenced to purchase more products as a result of the brain-wave patterns hidden in the musical notes and sound compositions. Different subliminal tapes were also sold for purposes of advertising and social programming and all contained the title "Sounds For The. . . ." Iv'e held on to this for about 25 years. Musically the sounds are typical easy listening or elevator music. There is no information about the company nor the musicians anywhere that I could find. The label/information has peeled away with time. Each side of the tape had ten songs. All 20 songs are recorded here as 16 separate videos with two tracks bundled together on four of them. Songs 4 and 1 are very classic 70s easy listening.

M481+ I feel the same way you do. I was a child in the 70s and 80s. I have fond memories of the purple ultra-violet lights with plants in the old Path Mark in the Eastern part of the U.S. I also have fond memories of going shopping with my Late Dad back in the 70s and 80s. I thought as a Child that he 70s music was so relaxing for shopping and I concur as an Adult.

Wanting One Angel. Hope you don't mind my brief interjection... Soft Instrumentals like these never made me feel sad at all. I always got the sense that the intention was to help you relax & clear your mind; the diametric opposite of much of the aggression & stress generated by mainstream Pop/ Rock music By the time I'd grown up to become another working-class "stiff," Soft Instrumentals had left the grocery stores & shopping malls. I just remember how difficult it was to find recordings like this, back in the early 90's, 'cause I wanted to relax to it so badly at the end of the day!

I don't think there's really any inaudible subliminal messages in this. Store music of the era influenced shoppers solely by the style of music and the moods it tended to induce; you might want shoppers excited but not too excited, or relaxed but not too relaxed. Another factor was whether the songs were recognizable melodies or not; that is, whether they were instrumental covers of popular music, or originals. Certainly the markers went to great lengths to make sure the songs were in the current style. Yes, you could say these did "social programming," but it wouldn't be what we think of now. And it certainly wasn't like the single-frame-in-a-movie "Buy Coca-Cola when you're thirsty!" ads of the fifties; those were tested, and they really didn't work. This was just about knowing how shoppers react in different moods, and then creating those moods in subtle ways (product displays, store layout, decor, music, and lighting were also part of this).
@MKIVWWI
@MKIVWWI 6 жыл бұрын
Good post. According to Joseph Lanza's book "Elevator Music" there was interest in what kind of music people responded to, studies were conducted, and the whole "mood music" concept grew out of that -- different music for different times of day, and in different settings. But when people start wondering about "subliminal messages" in such music, I figure the "Tin-foil Hat Brigade" of conspiracy nuts has arrived.
@kurenan4564

I agree. There's enough (successful) manipulation in the way stores choose their music and layouts, you don't need anything extra.

As a 70s kid that grew up with this music almost everywhere I went, I agree 💯%. The upload onto KZfaq from the magnetic tape of the compact cassette this music came from may very well have defeated any delicate subliminal messages this Minnesota-based "communications company" would have had to overdub into the recordings De Wolfe Music supplied to them. I never gave it much thought until you brought this up, but youre right. Yours is an excellent description of holistic, environmental parameters used to stimulate a positive, relaxed mood in the shoppers. Loveable ambiance music like this is the most powerful component, IMO

ya'll remember those F.M. radio stations in the 1970s that would play this kind of stuff? Here in the southwest we had KTSM...A DJ's recorded voice would every now and then pop in and say something like: "KTSM" ...Beautiful music... for beautiful times." :--)

*mrob75* Absolutely! I remember vividly: "Take it e a s y: KEZY-FM, Dallas-Ft Worth." "Perfect at home or throughout your day, at work. Just take it e a s y: KEZY-100 FM" Thank You for stimulating some terrific memories. Here in Central Texas we have one of the very oldest surviving Easy Listening radio stations, "Simply Beautiful 91.3 KNCT, Killeen-Temple." It's a listener-supported station now, but the reason it didn't get swept aside in the 80's or the 90's is 'cause it belongs to a university True to form, it has no live d.j.'s. Just a recorded voice, like you said. So there's no oppt'y for beoadcasting students to exercise their voicing/ narration. But it's still a training ground for radio amplification & transmission students, electronic technician training, & for broadcast students learning recordin & mixing, & R&M/ control room management for broadcast... A hundred Thank You's for joining this discussion :o) !

This sounds so familiar. Perhaps this was the music to some Indonesian grocery stores back then in the early 1990s. The music would be interrupted by some announcement to the effect of "SOS lemon scented floor cleaner is on discount, today only" or "this is announcement for a particular Mr. Broto, your son is waiting for you at the information booth; he's been looking for you and crying his eyes out." Good times.

Those stores you went to likely had access to the dewolf music library, as that’s where all of these tracks actually come from. ex: The second song in the video is titled “Moment in Time” by Roger Webb.
@magnificentmuttley154
@magnificentmuttley154 Жыл бұрын
*@Sacha Vaillancourt* is exactly right. De Wolfe's music was used throughout Easy Listening radio, & in low-budget TV production. "Music Library" music like this is still much more affordable than hiring a music composer to score an hour or two of TV or film. And then theres paying an orchestra or a band for their time to record it. And not every film or TV producer has a recording stage, a studio, or a public auditorium to accomodate a band for recording sessions. Thats yet another expense Anyway, thats why so many of these tracks are recognizable to anyone who was around in the 70s & 80s. It was all around us & there was simply no way we could know at the time that so much of it was performed by the very same orchestra. *Trivial fact:* De Wolfe's music is the soundtrack to every episode of CPT's (& PBS') _Trade Offs_ series, produced 1977-79 _Trade Offs:_ Why Money?, 1978, CPT m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdx8ptZqm9DTqY0.html This track, SFTS #6: _Hello Again,_ by Roger Webb, from his Natural Beauty album, 1981. The longest track so far and the second longest in the entire album I think. In this bipolar track (gloomy/joyful), they are interested in the individual rather than society. GSM focus on the story of the one rather than that of the all, because that story matters too. This sounds like a special, extra chapter, a deviation from the main storyline, but a deviation that I, and we, are so glad GSM made! I feel that this is the song touches me the most in the entire album and is the one I would smoke my cigarette to (smoking kills kids, don't take it up!) when I wake up at 3 am for a piss and feel like doing some thinking and contemplation before I go back to sleep. Fun fact: this track would go to inspire the menu music of the PC game for the Disney movie Ratatouille. (Mostly the second phase starting in 2:15) Also can I mention how much I want to say "Hi I'm Bob Ross" when I hear this song!!!

+Ukiby3000 Part of the melody sounds suspiciously similar to Gary Lewis and the Playboy's "I Won't Make that Mistake Again"; but it sounds like these guys only lifted part of the melody line, not the whole thing. Pretty ballsy. They could have been sued! :)

Thats exactly what I thought 1st time I heard this one. That lead part played on a 4 valve trombone sounds just like something Chuck Mangione would play. I could be wrong. Maybe thats actually a Coronet (trumpet) like his. Coronets still trick me when they play in low octave like this, because it sounds just like a 4 valve trombone to me. If it were a _SLIDE_ trombone, Id be able to pick up on that

@@magnificentmuttley154 Interesting feedback. I’m sure you’ve already heard music by Herb Alpert, if not check out “Rise” and “Route 101”… it’s awesome brass music similar to this or Chuck Mangioni. Rather, it’s just great jazz music in general

*@Hodassa Yentl Lifschitz* Yeah, you got me pegged right off the bat! Ive had his greatest hits album for 20 years now. It was released circa 2001. It spans his string of 1960s hits with Tijauna Brass. (Lonely Bull, Whipped Cream, etc) It also includes Rise, Route 101, Fandango, & a few others from the _Rise_ album (1980). As a kid I used to get Herb confused with Chuck because he copied Chuck's style so perfectly Oh yeah! Gene Krupa, Hoyt Curtin, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Prima, Artie Shaw, Les Shaw, Glenn Miller, & more recently Syd Lawrence (1970s) Cant get enough of 'em!

@@magnificentmuttley154 Right on, that’s one of my favorite jazz albums of all time his greatest hits. And yeah you’re right, Mangione & Alpert have a very similar style & sound. Yes, all of those artists you mentioned are absolute legends, love them all! Syd Lawrence I haven’t heard too much, I’ll check his music out when i get the chance. Thanks for the recommendation

@@hodassayentllifschitz9893 there are a number of episodes of Les Dawson, a weekly British TV show back in the 70's, that featured Syd Lawrence & his Orchestra, right here on youtube. Stuck with a TV landscape that only showed Lawrence Welk & no other big bands/ Age of Swing music, I only got to see Syd Lawrence on PBS a few times back then. I completely forgot about him, in fact, until he came up as a recommendation among big band/ swingers. I have to admit I was beside myself seeing him again In the words of our generation: Right on, man!
