I am a guitarist, recently started playing with some keys. I had NO IDEA that you could buy a stripped down keyboard called a controller and then load apps for it in my iPad. This is a whole new drug that I'm sure it's going to take a 12 step program to get me off of. I don't know if I should thank you for broadening my horizons or curse you for what I'm sure I'm about to do financially LOL !!! Thank you sir, this is some awesome stuff !!! Your setup is immaculate - love the tablet mount positioned over the keys like that! Truly is a modern workstation replacement (assuming the audio IO is clean, which isn't always guaranteed on mobile jacks).

Thanks for watching! The iPad placement is definitely deliberate lol, I had a Montage in the lab for about year and a half in the same location, so I got used to having a screen right by my keys. Plus I use the MPC X often so again, I'm really used to having a touch screen right there. I have all types of iPad stands but mounting to the table made the most sense for me with the table size and being able to have it right over the keys. Plus, I can change out the keyboard if I wanted to also and still have the same ergonomics. All audio is coming out of the hardware audio interface of the keyboard and not the headphone jack.

I'm starting to get into this more and more. Might be putting off buying a Yamaha MODX if I can get the iPad to get close enough with the sounds I want/need. I have the Korg Module (lots of expansions for it now), FM Tines and probably will buy the Pure Synth 2. Which apps will you recommend and which audio interface/controller?

Jorge Silvestrini the problem with the iPad is that it is not always that you find great videos like this one, which allow you to get to know really good apps, instead of looking for them. With a dedicated hardware, the sounds are right there.. Having said this..the iPad is way more flexible. And it is totally portable/mobile.

@@V4D2 Agreed - I believe there are 3/4 iPad Apps that we can have and use for almost a complete replacement to say a Yamaha MODX. At least, that's what I'm trying to do.

Big up St Joe I’ve been wanting to integrate iOS into my work for years but I never really gotten round to it. Even bought an Akai Synthstation 49 for the 30 pin iPads!!! I’ll definitely be checking out these apps. iOS is amazing for sounds! Great vid!

Although I’m jumping in here like 3 years after the fact, this is dope info. I incorporated my iPad Pro into my production workflow like 4-5 years ago. I connected my iPad to Ableton Live and basically use it as an external Plug-in module. iPad apps are way cheaper than their VST equivalents, so this is definitely worth doing. My iPad is featured in nearly all of my tracks.

My favorite app to use as a module is Animoog. Sounds so damn good and offers some synthesis options if you want, but it's mostly out of the way in favor of playing. Also MPE compatible if you have a controller that uses it

My friend, you are speaking my language! SUBBED. This is exactly how I use my iPad - I got it solely to use for music, primarily with the goal of using it as a sound module bc it seems to be the only way to get high-quality MIDI - controlled piano sounds in a truly mobile package nowadays without resorting to a full blown laptop. And by truly mobile, I mean capable to transporting to gigs in a subway or Uber. I was briefly using my Subsequent 37 for dual-duty as synth & controller for an old Nord Electro 2 rack but realized 1) 37 keys was not enough for piano, I needed at least another octave and 2) that old Electro had garbage acoustic piano. I used to use a Triton Extreme as my master workstation for years so I picked up an old Triton rack and the MOSS & grand piano expansions and while pretty good, just couldn't compare to modern grand piano vsts. So my current setup for mobile piano is a 2018 iPad pro (the last model with a dedicated audio jack) with a Roland A-49. The iPad is pretty much perfect but I'm always looking for the best apps (mainly acoustic grand and Rhodes, I've got synths six ways from Sunday). The A-49, while being as portable as a full-sized 49 key controller could ever hope to be, has no screen or basically any CC controls and it *requires* a PC or iPad to turn on AT ALL. It is only powered via USB and will not work if powered via USB charger or basic MIDI host. And the key action is... eh ok I guess but not good enough to overcome these flaws. How's the keybed of the iRig? Is it semi-weighted or otherwise halfway decent for grand piano expressiveness? Definitely gonna check out some of these apps, particularly the (non-FM) EP one.

Thanks for watching man! Yeah, you know exactly what I'm talking about as a hardware guy. (I'm also more looking for instruments than synths). I would say the Roland probably has better key action than the iRig, I wouldn't consider the key action on this to be the best by any means, it's a really light key action. It works for what I use it for but I don't know if it would have the feel you're looking for as a live musician. I really hope companies like Yamaha, Korg, Roland, Fatar, etc...come up with something similar to this irig joint, or maybe IK will come out with a pro version with a fatar keybed in it or something lol.

I just got my Roland a49 today mate, I first tried on my laptop,but there was a delay in sound.i guess coz my laptop is too slow, so I ran to get the camera connection kit and have started to use it on my iPad..just browsing through KZfaq to see which app is best for me, can u pls suggest? I need something to record my keyboard and my vocals,sometimes I record some from my acoustic guitar too through a Mike.

@@deepdoshi7113I’m betting you’re using Bluetooth headphones. Switch to wired headphones and you should be good to go. Bluetooth introduces too much latency to use in music creation. This applies to the iPad, iPad Pro or any laptop (regardless of how powerful). We can put a spacecraft on Mars but can’t get Bluetooth working as a viable alternative for using with DAWs and headphones. Go figure.

Just wanted to say this is the best demo on this unit and software. I had a hard time hearing new keys from Korg on the videos from Namm 2020. They talk for 2-3 minutes and not play the workstation or play like one sound. If I was a big wheel for Korg I'd hire you right now. Great job.

Wow, I had no idea iPad apps had come so far! What version of iPad would you consider the minimum to run these Apps? Would 64GB be enough memory, or do you find they eat up a lot of storage? Thank you very much for the quick tour and sharing the amazing capabilities!

I've been in the MIDI world for some years, but using my M-Audio Oxygens to play live along with my laptop, Reason and lately Cantabile Performer. This is my first time with an Ipad and I really want to make it work and try to leave my laptop behind. The thing is that I'm trying to find an app for IOS that allows me to use VST. This way I'll be able to import all my sounds and make them portable as hell

Thanks for watching! There isn't a program that uses desktop vsts, but there are programs that use AUV3 which are plugins. You may not be able to completely replace your laptop plugins with iOS versions as everyone doesn't make their plugins available on iOS.

The video did a great job covering what I was looking for, an overview of some of the apps available for iPad and similar devices. Many of my clients are home users instead of pro users and are looking for a reasonably priced app that does a good job offering sounds similar to what can be found on a digital piano. While many of our builds make use of the components from a new digital piano, some of our builds are just a MIDI controller, so knowing what apps are available and which to recommend, especially for piano tones is very helpful. @@SoundsAndGear

This is great, we use two iPads already within our setup. One for click tracks and another as a wireless mixer. We were looking for a hardware keys for piano and strings sounds. Hadn't even considered this but will be going down this route now. Thanks for the great video.

Great list... I twiddled through several you mentioned that I hadn't tested out yet (a few have me pretty excited so you cost me about $45!)... my go-to this year has become SampleTank (iPad mini II/128Gb RAM with a Korg microKEY Air 61 and a Roland GO:PIANO -- both keyboards have Bluetooth MIDI) because not only are there great sounds available (both by default and in downloadable libraries) but also the UI makes it easy for me to set up many patches in advance for live performance, so I don't have to go scrolling while on stage. Getting an older iPad (less than $200) with maxed out memory has so dramatically altered my performance reality that I don't carry a laptop any more (though I keep one at home to manage my iTunes library and shuffle files to various cloud storage).

Good video. In the past I believed It would be necessary to buy different keyboard to have a good soundBank, but now I’am convinced that the iPad can replace tons of keyboards, just pay attention to have a good iPad with enough storage space for all your apps and that’s it, no needs Yamaha motif rack or other keyboards, just an iPad Pro with 256 GB and 200$ apps and you’re ready to work.

that is a clean setup, just a keyboard and an Ipad, I love it! DAWs are too busy and distracting, the Ipad is so powerful it can replace a roomful of synths.

True, if you really want to, you can replace your DAW too. Plenty of options there as well. Cubasis, Garageband, Nano Studio, Beatmaker 3, Korg Gadget, etc. Thanks for watching!

A great video for someone coming from a hardware workstation/module-type background and curious about the iPad. An excellent summary of many of the best options out there today. I use a lot of these same apps. Also, very impressed with the iRig Keys I/O.. -great keyboard action in a compact space, plus luv those touch strips. Plus, it’s also an audio interface, so you can plug in a mic or guitar, right? Think about getting one sometimes..

Thanks for watching! I knew I wasn't the only person coming from this type of background and thought it would be cool to share how I'm using it. Yeah, the iRig has a single input (dual inputs would be even better) and it doesn't take much space, connects with a single cable, and just plain works. I like it for sure.

I’m very new to learning all this but I would luv to have a set up like this. It looks the most practical I’ve seen so far. Cheers!

Thanks for watching. I talk about it in the video. With the keyboard I'm using it's one cable to connect it to the iPad. The keyboard has audio outputs like a regular synth/instrument so I can just run audio cables from the keyboard to my mixer, audio interface, sampler, etc.

Few years ago, I was looking for a rack motif xs for my MV8800, but since I discovered iOS apps, I invested this money previously allocated for my project to buy a motif, to buy an iPad with 128GB, and monthly buy song module apps.

Nice move, definitely keeps you flexible and with the ability to grow. Even if you upgrade your ipad in the future you can take all of your apps with you to the new one!

Great video, it’s always interesting to see what synth apps are being used on iPad, in particular SampleTank, I discovered quite by accident that by varying the velocity from 70 to 110, the instrument sound changes dramatically, for instance, selecting Heavy Metal guitar and played at a velocity of 70 creates a heavy metal palm mute guitar sound, at a velocity of 110 it becomes a blistering lead solo with sustain. SampleTank is the best app by far. You have a great choice of apps.

extra dope video, i used my ipad too liek that and as an external synth as well, when on pc i use audiomux for the midi and audio signal and on mac i use the advanced audio midi setting you can enable the ipad as an external synth and record as you do for any romplers

Thanks for watching! Nice, yeah I mainly treat mine as a dedicated hardware module and just record the audio to whatever I'm using (not a huge MIDI guy, I dig working with audio) But I've heard great things about audiomux as well as integration with MacOS.

Wow! Your presentation was Great and I really enjoyed it, also can you explain your audio hookup and the iPad you are using, I have an old iPad and a Brand new iPad pro and connecting the audio can be very complicated? Again really enjoyed your presentation, i have learned a whole lot!!!

Thanks for watching. In this video I'm using the iRig Keys I/O, which connects via lightning and has audio outputs. Basically it has an audio interface build in. Otherwise, you would connect an audio interface via USB C/lightning, or run audio out of your headphone jack on the older iPads.
