@Nigel Day, Mike Love is one of the reasons Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar left the Beach Boys in the first place. They contributed some amazing material in the early '70s, and certainly wrote better songs in those two years than Al ever did.

Well to be fair, Al often sided with Mike Love in deciding the band’s direction during the 1970s and 1980s, orienting the band in a more “oldies act” direction. That’s a reason why he isn’t as admired as Carl or Dennis. But Al has really come around to be a major champion of Brian and a great companion to his career (and have a great solo career in his own right.) I think Al is great.

While other surviving legendary songwriters from the 1960's (i.e. Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Paul Simon, etc.) are consigned to mostly performing tunes composed decades ago, Brian Wilson stands out. Here is an infectious tune that he penned at age 73. It is one of the finest "sailing" songs you will ever hear. It evokes the ambience of the Caribbean in the tradition of "Sloop John B" and "Kokomo." This song is an anthem and one of the finest BW compositions ever.

This song definitely has some elements of Sloop John B intertwined in it. And how is it that Al Jardine's voice hasn't changed in over 50 years of singing? He sounds exactly like he always has.

Instrumental intro certainly compared with Sloop. But the song has a more laid-back and mellow feel. Kind of like a grown up Margaritaville. Sloop was more if an sailing Irish drinking song.

"Sloop John B" blew us away with the vocal arrangement a-Capella section back in the 60's which is in the last millennium of 1000... I remember the first time I heard it on the radio! Now as for "Sail Away" Tim, well Brian brought this gem from his muse which is now in the new millennium of 2000. The vocal arrangements and harmonies along with the instrumental accompaniment are spectacular and other (like 4th) dimensional. The entire album of Pier Pressure songs are breathtakingly stellar. He has saved the best for last and us. Keep on keeping on as Gladys would say...Brian - from a v.l.f... very loyal fan.

Dennis had so.much talent and wrote some really great songs like Only With You and Cuddle Up. His Ocean Pacific Blue album is still one of my favorites and he l ed me get thfu some tough times personally. He was so underrated but always was a driving force in the Beach Boys. YOU GO AL!! THOSE big voices have nothing on yours- you know why? Because your a beach boy and can sing this ditty in your sleep. Your presence reminds of the good guys, always in the background , but no longer Al - the louder they get the louder yo get because this is your time and I hope that Brian had the idea for your being the band leader of sorts. What I want to see is you lay somethin down on the guitar- 10 years with Glen Campbell , the best had to have shown you a few tricks. I lift my glass to you Al and the virtue of steadfastness to a fault.

Al Jardine a legend indeed, with Brian and Blondie. One has to think what could have been had the Beach Boys as we knew weren't sold out in a really sad performance of kicking a man while he is down. Blondie as a young man growing up in South Africa under extreme conditions which affected his whole life. I know because we were friends and still are. The pain was excruciating and he found a home and acceptance with these great guys. If you know him, he not only has a great voice but a great heart and spirit. Sail away Blondie.

Brian Wilson Featuring Blondie Chaplin & Al Jardine Produced by Joe Thomas & Brian Wilson Album: No Pier Pressure So many years ago But I remember A distant sunset on the open sea Fascinated by the sailing ships On a crimson shore that seemed to call out to me I still can feel the hope that fills my heart I still can taste the ocean breeze (sail away) [Chorus] As I sail away to the farthest reaches Follow the sun to the white sand beaches I only know what the west wind teaches Won't you sail away with me? (Sail away) made a wish upon a falling star (Sail away) never thought that we would get this far (sail away) I won't be lonely you can be my only Won't you sail away with me? For a while I almost gave up dreaming But still this image stayed alive in my soul While I was working trying to make a living My so-called life was spinning out of control Summer wind was blowing through my head The endless current of my dreams (sail away) [Chorus] As I sail away to the farthest reaches Follow the sun to the white sand beaches I only know what the west wind teaches Won't you sail away with me? Sail away to a land without time Drink my water from a shell that I find I won't be lonely you can be my only Won't you sail away with me? Oh, let me take you there to another land Don't expect the world to understand (sail away) We can sail away while we still have time There's a million places that I have in mind As we cast our fate to the open sea Sail away with me (Sail away) made a wish upon a falling star Never thought that we would get this far Try and imagine how our life would be If you could sail away with me Sail away Sail away Written by : Jim Peterik, Larry Millas ℗© 2015 Brimel, Inc. under exclusive license to Capitol Records. +Raymond Volshenk Thanks for the feedback, Raymond--yes, "The Flame" had a great debut album, produced by my dear lifelong friend--and 'brother in spirit,' Carl. Unfortunately, regardless of how great it was--and several very obvious 'radio friendly' singles, "See The Light" only made it into the 80's on the Billboard chart--Brother Records lacked the promotional and advertising dollars to properly back it--and it's distributor--Starday-King Records--did not have the staff, credibility or funds--to properly promote it. It remains--44 years later--a great album by a great group of guys.

Thanks for sharing. It the age old truth, not what you know, but who you know! And of course money is what makes it happen, or not happen. And it's not always the best that makes it in music, probably more do now than ever. My son's grew up on stuff like The Flames, Beatles, BeachBoys, and later on Oasis, U2 etc. My influence obviously. They went into music, and landed a recording contract with Sting Records, one of the bigger stables in South Africa. Got a number one with one of their songs, and 4 on the charts, in about 2003-5. Interestingly, Phil Doherty Bono's guitar tech heard them, while they were in Ireland and wanted to manage them, but at the time we had to go back to S.A to get paperwork sorted out. They are called Saints of Bliss, and you'll find them on Reverbnation. One of their old songs has just been launched on a Radio station in California, I believe, called AVA RADIO? Maybe you could check them out. We now in Edinburgh, Scotland, and it's a dead end street! Hoping to visit the States, and have a recce! Regards Ray Quinton!

jsgreen1000 No, Brian just walked away from it with another wave of his hand "Let it go" instead of fighting a bully. Source: articles from the time it happened. not "revisionist" history coming from the ML camp.

jsgreen1000 Mike Love Beach Boy, lyricist My first impression of “Good Vibrations” was that the band could have been James Brown’s Famous Flames. The original takes were very R’n’B. There are several different versions and it took months for my cousin Brian to decide which one would be the final one. Then he asked me to bring the lyrics over. And I kinda lagged on it. Being the Pisces procrastinator that I am, I left it until the drive from North Hollywood to the studio to write them. It took me about five minutes. We were in the yellow Convertible XKE I’d bought for my wife Suzanne, who was pregnant. We were driving down to the city and I asked her to take down these words. We got to the studio, I wrote them out on a scrap of paper and Carl went ahead and sang the lead. And of course, I came up with the part that goes: “I’m pickin’ up good vibrations/She’s giving me excitations”. That’s my musical contribution. This was before the Summer of Love, but there were definitely psychedelic rumblings on the West Coast. I felt “Good Vibrations” was The Beach Boys’ psychedelic anthem or flower power offering. So I wrote it from that perspective. The track itself was already so avant-garde, especially with the theremin, that I wondered how our fans were going to relate to it. How’s this going to go over in the Midwest or Birmingham? It was such a departure from “Surfin’ USA” or “Help Me Rhonda”. So I thought the one thing that everyone can relate to is boy-girl. You know, “she’s giving me excitations”. Had that track not had anything to connect to people intellectually or emotionally, then it would have been a brilliant piece of music, but perhaps not gone to No 1. Accolades from everyone, from Leonard Bernstein, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, The Who...the list is endless! No, he guaranteed they'd be relegated from top of the heap to the "has-been" oldies bin within a year.
