The power of Echoboy is versatility. So many useful models and so many ways to shape the sound to your need. It might not be the best true models, like UAD tape delays as one example, but Echoboys models are close enough. What really matters is the power to shape the models exactly to the music you’re working on. Place the resonance on that exact frequency you’re after. The Style editor is what it’s all about. And on top of that you can control compression, Distortion and diffusion. This versatility you wont get by UAD. You get one sound. The best sound. But you’ll find it either works or it does’nt. Most of the time it doesn’t cos it can’t be tweaked like Echoboy. Somebody mentioned Valhalla Delay. And while it’s amazing too, Maybe a bit better fidelity wise, and with some similar features (Diffusion, Distortion etc.), it still does’nt offer that depth of versatility. Pretty amazing for a plugin dating back to 2006. 😀

ive been playing around with echoANNOYED and im ANNOYED, I. had it with their plugins, I paid out the A55 for this cr@p, echoboy is so out dated, ok the sound is nice but come one, no repeat control levels? no main in out control?, you really have to sit there on a bus and tweak the dry wet knob and pray whatever goes to the echoboyed bus is heard loud enough or that the bus is loud enough, its insanity how much this plugin costs., look at delay controls like guitar pedals or even PCM 90s, there is a freaken repeat VOLUME KNOB!!!!!! what is wrong with Soundtoys!

Great walkthrough of the Soundtoys Echoboy! I didn't realize all of the modes and subtle details in there. The pacing in this video is great for following long with your own music setup and seeing what similar settings and mode changes sound like with your own tracks. And with the monitoring of the sound field displayed and toggling the Echoboy on and off I could see what kinds of stereo effects are in the sounds I'm using and what the Echoboy is adding or changing. I've saved a vst preset of that Insight setup which I plan to use a lot, thanks!

I have all the soundtoys tools and I the only two I use occasionally is Echoboy and Decapatator. They are versatile but they’re also fairly cpu hungry. I also have other go to delays like Valhalla which Are light on the cpu and I prefer the results. Great step by step explanation of how all the controls work. I learned a few things about some of the controls ive never played with.

love it . i started using their phase mistress to add phaser to crash cymbals . then i starte dplaying with echo boy to run on the entire drum buss , and also for a track where i just drop in sound effects . at this point i am familiar with the presets and i can adjust and tweak so its become a real favorite . i have also played with the distortion stuff and its just phenomonal. i may need to branch out and use some different stuff (valhalla freq delay is also so cool) . i know a profesional musician who uses soundtoys and i have been able to hear when he uses it for dramatic effect - i am like - there is echo boy ! so cool . they really are great plug ins , as i have played with all of it and i have to say i recomend this stuff .

Since we're having a Valhalla x Echoboy debate here imma give my perspective: Echoboy has more parameters/customization, however Valhalla has a bit less latency. Both take almost the exact amount of pc resource here (calling anything from Soundtoys "cpu hungry" is quite a weird statement). At the end of the day it comes down to taste/money between those two.

Hi great video, @5:19 can you explain WHY we don't want the delay inline on the track? What is the benefit to routing to an Aux bus? As a beginner the only benefit that I can see is that you could route multiple tracks to one effect and have a single change affect multiple tracks... am I missing something?
@ManchesterMusic
@ManchesterMusic 2 жыл бұрын
There’s a few things. CPU efficiency is one benefit. By routing all tracks to a single instance of delay on an aux, you’re cutting down on the number of plugins you’re using in a session, thus reducing the burden on your central processing unit. Another benefit is tonal consistency. Sending a tap from all those elements to one instance of delay will ensure there’s a sonic conformity/consistency. A good example to illustrate is reverb. You might not want your drums to sound like their coming from the bathroom, guitar to sound like it’s coming from the garage and keys to sound like their coming from a concert hall. By sending all those elements to one reverb on an aux you’re ensuring each element is sonically ‘coated’ similarly, so there will be tonal consistency that will compliment your mix. Does that make sense? Of course you can do whatever you want in your mix to achieve whatever sonic goal you’re after.

The different saturation styles are based off style edit parameters ? Or is it a combination of changing saturation algorithms and style edit?
@ManchesterMusic
@ManchesterMusic 2 жыл бұрын
It's actually unclear (even after re-reading the documentation on this) - but *believe* the algorithms are a result of the combinations in the style editor page. Everything 'style' seems to emanate from there, but I can't 100% confirm that.

@@ManchesterMusic Valhalla stuff sounds brilliant, has great interface and costs 50bucks. The reason I use Valhalla Delay more than Echoboy are the new ducking algos Sean Costello added to the already brilliant algorithms. They do help a lot in a busy mix. Granted one can set up Echoboy on a return track with a comp listening to the dry signal in the sidechain, having the ducking algo incorporated in the interface, makes for a faster and easier workflow. Both delays sound brilliant and there are other options on the market too. We're spoilt for choice really.

I only use Valhalla’s plate and vintage verb and although they can sound really smooth and nice, there’s something a bit synthy about them to my ears, that I just can’t seem to get rid of. Will keep experimenting but I often revert to other things if I’m trying to get basic ambience or realistic type reverbs, even space designer sometimes.
@nectariosm
@nectariosm 2 жыл бұрын
@@Superdelphinus Well Valhalla is algorithmic and Space Designer is IR based, if I remember correctly from my old Logic days. I have IR reverbs for realistic spaces anyway, but I am a sucker for the 80s/90s Lexicon sound, which Valhalla does very well.

I'm one of the few it seems that has never bought a single Soundtoys product, though I have been tempted many times. I can see the appeal of this one, especially after your showcase, but I think I will pass on it for now. I'm quite satisfied with what Valhalla's delay can do for both my composition work as well as my mixing/mastering work. I've rarely come across a situation where that one doesn't cut it, and when that is the case, I find I need something wild which it seems like this one would not fit the bill. I will say that this one seems very easy to work with though!

Echoboy and decapitator are the only must-buys I think. I use most of them fairly regularly, but those two I use all the time. Actually I’ve started using radiator quite a lot more recently too as part of an experimental mastering chain - there’s a bit of magic in there somehow.

I was so disappointed with Echoboy after all the hype. First of all the tiny dark indicators and knobs make it super annoying to use but most importantly I just couldn't create truly authentic tape delay sounds like with Valhalla or Gen ECHOSON. I even found there was nothing I couldn't easily reproduce (and then exceed) with Valhalla. The one SoundsToys plug I truly adore is the Little Plate. I tested to death against other plate reverb and Little Plate beat then all.

For CPU efficiency and tonal consistency. However, you can do whatever you like with the tools… but it’s generally a faux pas to use time-based effects inline.
@willibtx
@willibtx 2 жыл бұрын
It allows you to send multiple different tracks/instruments to the same delay or reverb without running a different instance on every track. You could use the same reverb or delay for snare, vocal, guitar, etc (which isn't a great idea in every situation, but can really save on CPU load since you're running one plugin instead of three). It also allows for some nifty mixing tricks like ducking the wet signal with the dry signal using sidechain compression. Also it keeps you from messing up your gain structure by accident, or mistakenly putting the delay or reverb before the EQ or compression.

@@willibtx Hi Will. I have a question about multiple tracks using Reverb. I get the CPU thing, but wouldn't you have to use the same preset for every track? I am a bit confused on this. You sound very informed on this subject. Thanks

Sorry, but I need to correct you.. The "Prime Numbers" switch is used to alter the timing of the repeating signal, so that no resonance build up occurs because of feedback. This obviously means that you need a feedback value above its minimum, to be able to hear any thing it's doing. However you don't show this when talking about the effect. You just run it through a 100% wet signal and the feedback all the way down to 0%... I mean... it's an "echo machine"? of course you need to be able to hear more than one echo, when altering any parameter. it makes pretty darn good sense.. if you don't fully understand an effect whilst teaching 25000 people about that effect, just be transparent. To me, this makes me doubt anything else you say.
