30 years of wear and tear, dirt and grit - in this video we check out what condition you can expect from a 30 year old Soundtracs JADE Analog mixing console. There are plenty of dirt to clean, scratces to polish and paint that we might refurbish. But there are also some really great advantage when it comes to build quality that was better in thge 90's that still is in excellent condition, and will keep having a long life.
This is the third video from our serie about setting up and fixing a SoundTracs JADE 32 analog mixing console.

In the past Tim Jones by Studio Systems in the UK sold all the parts you need. He is retired but maybe his successor have those knobs for you guys. Cheers, Erik

Great stuff folks. I love this adventure. Checking out the channels is also good to do with the built-in oscillator, patch the oscillator into any channel on the patchbay and check the levels. I put all the knobs and plastic fader controls in the dishwasher and they came out pretty clean. For the channel strips I removed the face-plate before installing the I/O unit in the console and cleaned them up with soap and water, any strong cleaning products will remove the silk screening on the plate, so watch out what cleaning stuff you use. The small faders double up as extra channels during mixdown, but can also be used to control the 24 busses internally for using parallel effects. One last thing..........for cleaning scratchy pots and faders, you can use a lubricant / cleaner called De-oxit D5. It's a little expensive but works wonders. Great work and thank you 2 very much for the videos. Keep them coming. Good luck

Thanks a lot for the tips - that is highly appreciated!👍 Ah, it seems like there are many ways of using the small faders, since the layout of the console is very clever. Yeah, i guess we have to look in to some Deoxit. I have heard people recommend F5, do you know if there is any difference between D5 and F5?
@Joey-rp5vg
@Joey-rp5vg 2 ай бұрын
@@moneeo Your very welcome. The F7 I think is more of a cleaner and the D5 is more lubricant ( I could be wrong ). Both are pretty expensive for a small can so maybe use sparingly. I also had a few corroded connections in the patchbay, so I used some deoxit and a pipe cleaner to clean it up. If you open the patchbay be careful that some of the ribbon cables don't pop out at the rear.. Not all ribbon cables are locked in place. The busses / Groups are selected with an internal jumper. Every channel I/O unit has these header pins inside and the buss numbers next to them. You set a jumper between the pins to select what buss you want that particular I/O channel to be. But there are only 24 busses / Groups. So if your going to use them then you need to know where they are on the board. Hope that makes sense. 🙏

@@Joey-rp5vg Yeah, these ribbon cables at the patchbay looks very fragile, so i will try to avoid them. Just like you said, i believe it is a good idea to clean the patchbays connectors, i have noticed some crackles there.👍

@@moneeo Oh and one more thing......Go round the entire console and press all switches several times. Normally the switches aren't used alot and thats where the corrosion comes from, lack of use. Good luck. Joey

The fact this remained in operation so much of its life is a great benefit to you. Sitting in a hot, wet warehouse - for instance - can cause irreparable damage. I’ve just given a 50 year old MCI to a friend. He had the skills for restoration and the time to do so and has done an almost unbelievable job restoring it. Many, many dozens of hours with q-tips and various solvents after removing all knobs and buttons was the secret.

Yeah we feel greatful for the condition, it seems like it's only the last two years it has been sitting in a studio untouched. Nice - that MCI must have been a big restoration. It makes me smile hearing about old consoles like this that after all the years gets to shine and sound as good as they deserve!❤

These videos are getting better and better! It's truly exciting to follow your work on this great desk. One thing strikes me though: Where do I plug in a microphone? I see no XLR sockets. Please cover that in your next episode! 👍♥

Thanks mate!❤ It's so much fun doing these videos, and at the same time really force us to get it up and running 🙂 It feels so great to NOT have the XLR's on the back of the console, i will cover that in future a video, thats a great idea!👍

why are two videos hidden in the Jade playlist?

@moneeo Ай бұрын
Ah, my mistake. It was two earlier versions of the video that are already there, that got deleted but kept it place in the playlist. Thanks for noticing, now it's fixed. In a couple of days the next Jade video will be published, it's almost done. 🙂

Can recomend deoxit F5 for the faders and pots and deoxit D5 for switches and input jacks and XLR's!

So great to hear that you can fix the problems yourself, that is what i am hoping to do as well.👍 What has been the most common problem on your Jade?
@Frank290578
@Frank290578 2 ай бұрын
Thank you. I bought the jade in a burnt down studio. all the knobs were melted. and every circuit board black with soot. I sprayed each channel with dasty, cleaned it with a brush and clean it with water. I sprayed the wooden side panels and plate above the meter bridge and the front under the leather with anthracite paint myself. motip bumper spray. looks better than original... there are. not many problems in all the years. I did replace a few capacitors. the problem I sometimes had was that the red and black wire + - 17 volts in the center console sometimes did not make good contact and then became very hot. and then the jade receives too little power (15 to 16 volts) and you hear a hum from the speakers. and the dynamics then sometimes restart. the temporary solution was to push the plugs in firmly. also in the power supply. but I soldered the red and black wire later so the problem no longer occurs. and I had to set the voltage a little higher in the power supply, you have 2 potentiometers for the - and + voltage
