Frank Nastasi was a real asset to the show. He brought life to Pookie. The look of horror on Pookie's face was hysterical. At age 67, I'm not embarrassed to still laugh out loud at this. In fact, I probably find it funnier now than when I was a kid. What a grungy looking puppet, I think the original Pookie was found in a trash can. The late 70's version with the newer puppet is just as hilarious.

The loose, hip atmosphere, including the sounds of the set crew breaking up, was something no show had, save for one. I have a feeling that Steve Allen was an influence on the comedic genius that was Soupy Sales; how could they not have known each other with the similar wild, spontaneous humor they generated?

Soupy had a group of fans at his live show at WNEW everyday. We sat quietly on folding chairs and watched in amazement. His crew was his laugh track. Everyone friendly and funny!! We had such good times back then. Soupy always spent time outside the studio with us and took pictures and talked and signed autographs. He was amazing!!😍🥰

When I was in grade school, Soupy was my favorite. He also had a late nite show. Soupy did his show from the Maccabees Bldg which is across the street from the Detroit Public Library and Wayne State Univ. Sometimes he did his show on the sidewalk and would talk to people walking past. For a time, Soupy was pretty close with Frank Sinatra. I remember one show where Frank took a pie in the face. There was one show where the walls on the studio set were being pushed in. I found out later that several of the kids in my class were invited on set and they did that. One evening, my parents and I watched a show that Soupy did in the Grosse Pointe High Gym for free. Soupy was a naturally funny guy in a nice way.

Still laughing at pookie. Me too I lived in Detroit same year you up on Soupy Sales. I nickname my son was 30 years old now Pookie when he was little. I still call him that. He laughs all the time he's seeing some of the videos. Is it true story I went to a wrestling event and one of the big Arenas and Detroit. Can't remember which one. Before the event took hold. Soupy Sales steps into the middle of the Ring. And sis okay we're going to have a Soupy Sales Shuffle contest. So bunch of kids including myself got in the ring and did the Soupy Sales Shuffle. I won. It was a cheap little plastic trophy. But I was so excited. LOL God I wish I had that trophy still. That was my favorite show. And there was a black tooth and White Fang. Great memories huh?

Sometimes age works in our favor. At age 67, I laugh more now at Soupy Sales and The Three Stooges than I did as a kid. As a youngster, a lot of the jokes and the presentation were not fully appreciated by me especially with the Stooges. So now, I find myself questioning my maturity. This stuff is hilarious.

I was able to talk with Soupy on the phone 20+ years ago while he was co-hosting on a local radio station in Toledo. I told him a few jokes and he asked me if I wanted to go on the air with him. I declined his offer because I am a big chicken but the point is that Soupy is a very generous man willing to share the stage, as it were, with others. This is evident on his tv shows. He always let his co-stars and staff get a laugh, often at his expense and he obviously loved it that way.

Soupy was the best. Funny, silly, in-the-moment and inspired. Watched him in NYC in mid-60's. ( Also, Chuck McCann, Sandy Becker and Sonny Fox.) Actually, his show NEVER had an audience, there was no room for an audience and there was a liability issue. If you did go, most likely you sat in a room with monitors, like on the first floor, or the 5th floor. They had studios 1,2,3 & 5. My dad did Soupys sound effects and I used to go into the studio all the time

Pookie was the best. I remember one commercial they did. One of the sponsers was Sivercup bread. Pook was going to get some for Soups lunch. They showed a bunch of old clips of car, train & plane crashes then a boat wreck. When he came back to the window he & the bread were soaked. He started throwing all the wet bread at Soupy and as a 6-7 year old I almost peed laughing so hard. This was from his days in Detroit before there was any tapes Everything was done live.
