Impaq is not the largest homeschooling provider. We easily have around a million children homeschooling in our country, and most of them refuse to register with the Government. only about 30k of those are Impaq students (from what I hear - I stand to be corrected as this is my guesstimate) and the vast majority are "homeschooling PROPER", with the parent at home teaching or presenting to their own children only, using a variety of resources and collaborative groups to engage with others doing the same thing. This is known as Eclectic homeschooling or unschooling if you are following a self-directed learning approach. Apart from that, there exists a plethora of partial/full-time/homeschooling/unit study/sectional and complete curriculum international online schooling options that have been going for many years. South Africa is just a small tip on the edge of one massive continent and Homeschooling is a huge and varied lifestyle approach to the education of children. Traditional homeschooling used to use homeschooling material specifically, and not mainstream schooling content because the academic content is why so many parents worldwide chose to remove their kids from schools. In South Africa, we have a much more varied sentiment about this, and our reasons are far more complex because of the sheer scope of many socioeconomic challenges Firstly, one cannot provide homeschooling, just like you cannot provide the service of marriage or parenting. Homeschooling is a legal status. As a homeschooler of my own children and a parent of 25 years, I have had to comment on headlines and articles like this regularly. It is no wonder Impaq doesn't have the stellar reputation the media peddles. Impaq is an educational helps provider. They sell a product, they are not a HOMESCHOOLING provider. Impaq is a merchant that offers a CAPS curriculum in terms of books and support, exams etc. The traditional homeschooling model is specifically NOT school at home, but more of an organic, learner-directed, project type, research-fueled line of study. Impaq is basically taking regular school work, at a mainstream scholarly pace, with no consideration to asynchronous learning back home, facilitated by an off-site mainstream institution. It's not what homeschooling in South Africa ever was or is or will be. HOMESCHOOLING is an umbrella term for many different approaches and that does include school at home if this is what is best suited to your family's needs and budget. Because our long-standing legal provision for homeschooling specifically provides for parents who want to remove their children from the mainstream, educational indoctrination movement in order to engage with alternative forms of education, it's not very sensible to call mainstream distance education "homeschooling" even though one can incorporate that into your homeschooling journey if you wish. I don't trust any companies that deliberately misconstrue terminology to gain access to the community economy.
