This is the Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) trip “The Andes to Patagonia” we took to South America right before the COVID19 pandemic occurred. This adventure with the Iguazu Falls post trip was 23 days. The trip starts in Buenos Aires, Argentina where we learn the Argentina Tango and visited a local Milongas to try it out (at least the brave ones). We visited the lively streets in the La Boca District. Next, we flew to Bariloche, Argentina where we rode a sky lift to the top of Campanario Hill with a panoramic view of lake Nahuel Huapi with the small villages in the distance. We did a Limay River float with lunch and horseback riding with a family dinner at a ranch on the Patagonian steppe. We drove to Puerto Varas, Chile and visited Perez Rosales National Park at the base of the Mt. Osorno volcano. Next, we drove to Castro Chile where we had “A day in the Life” of the Rilan community including the hosts preparing a traditional meal called a curanto. Curanto is a stew consisting of typical local fare-shellfish, meat, potatoes, and vegetables-cooked inside the ground with hot rocks, similar to a Hawaiian Luau. One of the highlights was visiting the Punihuil Wildlife Reserve to watch the miniature penguins. Next, we flew to Punta Arenas and visit the Magellan Straights and an outdoor museum of Nao Victoria (the only ship that returned from Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe). Next, we drove overland to El Calafate, Argentina to visit Los Glaciares National Park. There we saw the Pertito Moreno Glacier. These glaciers are fed by a giant ice cap, the largest continental ice extension after Antarctica, that begins in the Andes and occupies well over a third of the park’s total 1,700 square miles. We took a boat ride to get a closer look at the glacier and saw several ice calvings in action. Next, we flew back to Buenos Aires for one night. This is the end of the main trip. However, we booked the 4-day post trip to Iguazu Falls. The Iguazu Falls are Located on the boarder of Argentina and Brazil, together, they make up the largest waterfall system in the world, with roughly 275 distinct falls and large islands. There we saw the falls on the Brazil side one day and then on the Argentina side on another day. We even took the excursion to ride in a boat underneath the falls to get completely drenched. That was very exhilarating. This was a wonderful trip that made our bucket list.
