A very snakey outing in South Carolina, where we find over 40 snakes under tin in a few hours before getting rained out! The only new species for the episode was an unusual South Carolina Slimy Salamander sharing tin with a pair of Copperheads.

When I was about 13, I was fishing in this little pond in Bradenton FL, circa 1977. I felt something on my bare left foot, I look down, and there's a huuuge cottonmouth head resting on my toes!!! I was scared sh!tless! I didn't breathe for about 2 minutes, until it slithered up and over my foot, and disappeared into the brush!

Funny story, I live near where you flipped today. I have a big aquarium and one day I cleaned it and did a water change. I replaced the ornamental rocks[ hollow store-bought rocks] I kept the replacement rock outside on my back porch. A few weeks later I did another water change. When I picked up the fake rock in my aquarium a copperhead came out of the rock and smelled very awful. He was decentergrating from being in my tank underwater for a few weeks. Had to completely remove everything and super clean it my tank.😩

Copperheads are some of the snakes you find that I'm most "meh" at, but the zipper patterned copper, and especially the pale one, were lovely!

A large Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake bit my Mother in Law- Poor snake convulsed for an hour before it died...Mother in Law didn't notice the bite.

As someone who frequents a good part of the low country of South Carolina, I can confirm that there is mostly copperheads and moccasins. Occasionally you’ll see a timber rattler, and once in a blue moon you’ll see a diamondback.

Here in NE Oklahoma it’s a similar thing, ‘cept we get more rat snakes than copperheads. But you still have probably a 1/3 chance of finding a snake under a piece of tin. Me and my dad one time was doing roofing in a chicken house we were building, and there was a 5-6’ rat snake underneath it. I never in my life had I seen him so scared up until that point. He dropped that tin and screamed. And this is a 49 year old grown man. I used a fire poker we had outside to lift the tin up, cuz he wasn’t able to identify it so he just said “snake” and he pointed it out to me under the tin. And when I grabbed it he looked at me like I was holding fire in my hands.

I always love you vlogs. Please linger a bit longer on each find the go pro zipped over many so fast I often could not spot what you were seeing on my computer without pausing it. In real time there I know they were easy to see. I'm struck by how much the Coppers remain still and rely on their camo-skins to remain unseen, when the other snakes you uncovered were often more reactive. Here in CA we don;t have those beauties.

Whether it’s something that I need to improve with the video, or even something that is a suggestion that I could bring, I will always consider. Perhaps he had a long day and didn’t feel like editing all that video out. We’ll never know, but one thing is for sure I’m pretty sure he’ll note this for next time!

Those are certainly beautiful snakes. I read that Lowcountry copperheads are desirable for antivenom production as it is often more toxic that in other parts of the southeast. The slimy was really cool and I learned from this video that they changed the name...lol... P. glutinosus was such a great descriptive scientific name. Its been a pretty decent year so far here in the Lowcountry of SC! There must be a lot of chow for those snakes!

I live in SC and around water, you’ll see water snakes and cotton mouths but in the woods, it’s copperheads. They’ll live in you flower beds too. We have a king snake around our house thankfully.

Holly copperheads, I have never seen so many copperheads in one place and all of them was beautiful light ones dark ones, I love copperheads even though they are so common it never gets old finding them and they are always so calm as long as they are not bothered and don't feel threatened.

i think the scariest/coolest/most dangerous part about copperheads is that even standing right over them, you can hardly see them. we have copperheads throughout the woods where i live, and with leaf litter, they’re impossible to notice without getting closer than anybody should.

Crazy how you have such an even distribution of both Northern and Southern Copperhead morphs all there together. Edit: Some looked like the ones you see in East Texas and some looked like ones from the West Virginia Highlands. Wild.

What a large number of copperheads, geez!!! Mind blowing how many there were lol! I do have to say though that the dog was a pretty big distraction for me in the video. I've always struggled with anything that has heavy or raspy breathing (my own self included), so it could just be me. I also found thinking about the what ifs on the likelihood of the dog getting too close to one of the snakes. Idk, I guess what I'm trying to say is that if it were me, I would never bring, or allow a dog to go with me field herping lol. Great video otherwise; keep up the awesome work!!!

When lifting the tin, your thumb looked like it was only 6 inches away from that rattlesnake. The fact you got away with that is a tribute to how much snakes don't want to bite. And maybe being cold and slow...but it still scared the s..t out of me.

Great video I can’t believe the wide range of colors in the copperheads. I’m new to reptiles and amphibians but learning more everyday. If you ever get time and need ideas for a video maybe you can do a herping for beginners or a identifying reptiles video. Thanks can’t wait for the next video

If I'm not mistaken, every piece of tin had at least 1 copperhead, with multiples under most. I know that metal acts as a heat sink for the snakes, but I wonder why it's predominantly copperheads that love metal? My father had a scrap pile at his trucking company when I was growing up, and from time to time our mechanics would dig around for a piece of metal or part in it, and you had to be careful, because you could usually count on multiple copperheads.

Got way too close to a huge Copper Head at an old country cemetery in Georgia. Gave me a real start. Had to be between four and five feet. When your busy reading gravestones I was not looking for snakes. My mistake.

Why so many copperheads in that area? I've never seen that before. Kinda crazy how close his finger tips were to that one copperhead that was sitting under the tin. I think I'd use a hook to lift those. Especially once it became clear there were a ton of copperheads out there.
