Ace, Leah, & I got out for the opener of the SD Residents weekend on public land. It felt so great to be back out after 'em!

I love at the end when Ace is laying in the truck bed, his tail wiggling, just sniffing the rooster scent. These videos are helping me through withdrawal, aka, the off season.

Ace is a joy to watch, tons of energy and that tails going a mile a minute! So good to see good bird numbers after a winter like that 🙏

Wow Ace comes through yet again, he is a certified downed bird specialist, my first bird of the season, same thing but never found him with 2 good labs, hes probably still running. The great Ace chase," I'm not tired ,I'm winded" LOL

Glad you're back for another season. Well done. I enjoy watching the flushers like Ace. He is solid. I also hope you got a little of the "Dad, don't embarrass me" lecture on the way home! ;) Be well and have a enjoyable season.

Thanks Mike. When Ace finds birds in light cover, I get a workout. Great to start another season! Oh, & Leah doesn't get embarrassed by me. She's pretty confident I should be embarrassed by myself. 😆

Really a nice video on what it is like to hunt with a a springer with some drive. I have had 2 springers and both were fun to hunt with. So many good memories of knowing my dog was on a running bird with the ability to hit the whistle and have my dog sit until i caught up with it. Released the dog again and continue this process until the dog kicked the bird up within shooting range, so much fun! Gotten older now and hunt behind a GSP, nice relaxing pace. Thanks for sharing your video with us.

He's my 3rd springer. He's only 4, so he's a handful sometimes. I'll try to keep up for now, but someday I'll have to train a whistle sit. Most of these birds won't wait. But for the time being, I'd rather see them & not get a shot, than never see them at all.

Oh, how I miss the good ol' days of hunting pheasants in Michigan with my 1st English Springer, 4 decades ago. She was simply a natural, and taught me so much about how to enjoy the sport. Love seeing Ace's tail wagging at 34:00, how they love to do what they were bred for! Thanks for sharing this. Great seeing how you kept him hydrated, too.

Very nice dog work, they say the Springer is the only dog for wild pheasants. Also like your choice of gauge, 16 is my favorite. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching. A field-bred springer definitely fits my style of hunting best, especially late season in snow & cattails. Early season, light cover they can be a challenge. Yes, they can be trained to "hup", but then in most cases (where I hunt) you'd never catch up to the bird. I'd rather see a pheasant & not get a shot at it, than never see it at all.

Great video! I felt like I was with you when Ace was searching for that second bird. I've had that happen many times where you down one and it takes forever to find it but when you do it's exhilarating.

Right? And not because we need the bird so badly (although losing one is the pits), but because your dog has just done something amazing. For me, it's the biggest thrill in pheasant hunting.

🤣🤣🤣 So nice of you to say so, Lookis. I'm guessing my off-season regimen looks much like yours. Working too much. Sitting around a lot. Texting back & forth w/ my innumerable friends about pheasant hunting. It's grueling.

It was. Probably early August, although I've shot them considerably younger than that even. And later in the season.

Boss 1 oz of bismuth 4s. That 2nd bird was a prime example of why I prefer 4s over 5s. It was a long-ish straight-away, laying there dead about 15 yds from where he fell. Took a little to find him, but I'll take that every time.

That’s a good sign, we found even adult hens didn’t re-nest in Illinois, as our habitat deteriorated.

What shells are You using? Brand, FPS, size shot?

Boss, 16 ga, 1 oz bismuth, #4, 1350 fps. When I can shoot lead, it's typically Fiocchi (High Velocity, Optima Specific, Field Dynamics, which are all the same thing; NOT Golden Pheasant), 1-1/8 oz, #5, 1300 fps.

Heading out to SD near Holabird on Nov 9th! Great stuff. Great to see the amount of birds that made it through the snowy winter. Your dry delivery had me cracking up. As a dad of a 15 year old daughter, I can relate 😂
