South Korea has a sizable military industrial complex, so it's no surprise they make their own electronic optics. In this video we're taking a look at red dots from DI Optical and Actus, and talking about South Korea's potential appeal in the US consumer market.

The dong in machine gun optics with the big windows and the mechanical BDC were terrible. The gov bought tons of them. Everyone hated them and they were super clunky and could block the feed tray tabs on the 240. We had them for the mk19, 240 and M2. Replaced them with trijicon products.

@@Joe-hz1nw We had a bunch that were deadlined due to failure to hold zero. I personally never used one that wouldn't hold zero, but there were plenty sitting in the arms room that were claimed to be broken. So take that for what it's worth. Most guys also hated the mechanical BDC and preferred a simpler reticle based BDC like the ones found in the ACOG and other magnified optics.

Personally I think ditching the "Dong-In" name for the US market was a mistake. Think of the free advertising through memes, especially if they leaned into it and named their optics stuff like "unit", "cyclops" and "long dong" for magnified/lpvo scopes. Who *wouldn't* want a Long Dong?

I had a DI Optical RV2 on an AR a few years ago during a brief window when they were available, I guess. Mostly I just wanted a red dot that took a AA battery with good battery life and good build quality. And at least at the time the only real options were cheap garbage, or Aimpoint. I stumbled on DI by shear chance and really liked it honestly. It was built like a tank, had good battery life, and took cheap ubiquitous AA batteries. Only real problem was at the time they advertised an auto shut off and shake awake feature that simply did not exist. The first unit shut off after 30 minutes regardless of movement and would have to be manually tuned back on. They did ship a replacement that just stayed on no matter what, which was fine by me. Maybe the cost of fixing that mistake both financially and reputationally is why they've never really come back to the US market in force. Which again is a shame. I think their stuff has promise with enough development time. I understand now the battery issue isn't as big a deal as I thought it was at the time with long enough run time. But using a common battery still doesn't hurt. Unfortunately, my house got broken into and the thieves stole the whole damn safe, including the gun with the RV2 on it, and by that point you couldn't get them anymore. If they become available again, I might buy one just for the nostalgia.

Loved the Blade Runner reference. While the constant background advertising was Japanese in nature, the actual world we see in the movie is heavily Chinese dominated. Also, I seemed to remember that the internet could be used for more than Lisa Ann porn and KZfaq, so I 'googled it' (I think I spelled that right) and Sony is indeed still around. Sony. So fun facts, I am friends with one of the founding engineers of DI Optics when they started their US front. And if it tells you anything about their quality, even he doesn't use their stuff lol. They are good on paper but if you dig deep the build quality and QC is not there. They do not hold up under use. My friend also tells me that the Steiner DRS1X is actually OEMed by DI Optics USA and that thing never took off for a reason. My friend eventually formed VG6 Precision on his own and then became the principle engineer at Aero Precision. If you know, you know.
@TheStig505
@TheStig505 6 ай бұрын
I work at Steiner, the R1X (not to be confused with the DRS1X) was indeed made by DI Optical. We rejected a lot of them mostly for tracking issues, to the point that they were checked 1-by-1 before being shipped to retailers. Ones on the second-hand market should be fine, but the warranty still works on them. The DRS1X is made in Colorado besides of course the lenses and some of the electronics.

For most infantry personnel, they gave us something called the pvs 11k(probably manufactured by dongin also) which is a scope type reddot and it worked quite nice with the pvs04k night vision scope. Sadly, I was a TOD/radio guy so i barely got to use them.

It is actually surprising to hear Core-1 did fare in the middle in terms of performance. As a conscript I was issued one along with the Actus 1-6x, but I had some gripes using it with K2C1. Grunts do grunt thing I guess but I think there was a legitimate issue in the rifle system as a whole.

@@michaelturk7237 K2C1 is basically just a K2 infantry rifle with added picatinny rails. But, to do that they changed the iron sight design. This is where everything went wrong.. The rear sight is detachable, but MOD just said nope to the front sight post and just made it a tall freakin ring! Not detachable, not folding no nothing. That blocked the red dot's vision so much we added a riser with that high sight mount. Now the red dot is so high that I can't get a hard cheek weld! Also, you were supposed to be able to use irons through that mounting. Nope the riser is just a tad bit high that you can't see the lower half of the sight picture unless you crank up that range setting to 500, 600m. Core-1 with OG K2,K1A rail upgrade kit seemed fine. But just for K2C1 this is just a beginning.. Actus 1-6x weren't free from this matter

All of them are awesome under NODs, built like absolute tanks, and the EG1C's circle dot is currently my favorite RDS reticle. All three have NV settings and good battery life. I stand corrected on the T3N battery. As to quality, the DI sights are easily as well-made as my Aimpoint PROs. The dots were VERY sharp and clear, and the NV settings worked well with my issue NV gear. The very first generation had a slight tint to the glass, but after that the glass was extremely clear (new generation of coating). They didn't have shake-awake, and for half the price of my PRO (and how cheap AA batteries are) I can live without it. Battery life is excellent. They are combat sights rather than competition sights, pure and simple. You could beat them with a hammer and they wouldn't lose zero. The major failing for DI Optical was in the COMPLETE lack of marketing in the US. They were simply invisible. That said, DI Optical is a supplier to the US military for machine gun optics (like the big ones you see on an M2).

I have an idea for a new video. Test the light emissions out the front of all red dots and holos and illuminated LPVOs and prisms you can get your hand on under night vision. Is it just fudd lore that an enemy with NVs would be able to see your scope emissions even when "passive" aiming? Or des it make sense that Sig wants to sell their $3k red dot without front reflection?

The Bushnell Mini Cannon is also made in Korea. It's out of production, but you can still find them for sale new, and for only $125. Quite a good value proposition if you ask me.

Video Idea: Use a quest 2 with an IR Illuminator clipped to it for the cheapest and dorkiest night vision setup and then try to actually shoot and move with it on. The 4 cameras on it morph the images into one picture so it would be like IR drunk goggles basically.

Hey Hop, speaking of Dong In, that reminds me of Bushnells Big D and Lil P. Have you ever seen them in person? The Lil P is the most baffling sight I have ever seen, its a micro prisim that only has a 13mm window and seemed to vanish almost as soon as it was released.

I had a DI Optical FC1. I thought it was great. Then, during a very rainy rifle class, it got water inside. It took a lot of sleuthing to find a contact to ask for a replacement, from which I was very surprised to get a reply, even if it was in broken English. They sent me a new one, but eventually I sold it to a SK military respecter.

I kind of wish the battery was directly on the bottom as part of a built in riser. That way it's not blocking your pereferal vision and you're probably going to want a riser anyway.

While I was in the ROKMC, the only optic I remember ever seeing was actually an old Aimpoint T1. Then again, I was in a Logistics battalion and we all used the older K2 rifles not the K2C1s that infantry gets. That being said, one of the places I was stationed had infantry guys that would do fire watch for us at night and they never had optics. They all just had a rail cover and a vertical fore-grip. Considering the fact that most of us are all just conscripts, the most 'clone correct' you can get is having a standard K2, or whatever that discontinued export model was called, paired with a shitty sling. Though, I had ONE NCO with the older model of K2 that slapped on a quad rail handguard (which the top section extends to the rear, above the receiver, for optics), but even he didn't have anything more than a sling on it.

It's weird, because most of the top of the line phones... Aren't made in chinastan. That being said... Ten years ago, Holosun was making airsoft clone optics. Five years ago, only a few KZfaqrs were shilling their early serious optics. Now... They are OEMing optics for bigger names, and are pretty much the largest red dot optic manufacturers and make very good stuff.

HOLOSUN lost their minds, it was a steal when the price reflected the Chinese slave labor to produce it, now for the price I'll take the US made Eotech, even aimpoint has a sub $400 dot. I'm particularly fond of Eotech, but if you don't have $650 for an optic just buy an aimpoint ACO for $350, the glass in both make holosun look like the wish Chinese clone it is.
