So when SHTF, you have 20+ million people who have served active duty and who will pick up a gun, some 'nades, and fight. Imagine if Arab jihadists had that many trained men. Yeap, that's horror right there. Coupled with 70% mountainous terrain, nobody can steamroll through Korea with anything less than nukes and WMDs. If the standing army gets destroyed, it'll be urban and mountain guerrilla warfare until invaders type GG and go home.

There's a reason even the Viet Cong feared ROK Marines and Aussie SASR soldiers. I've heard stories of the Viet Cong launching ambushes on ROK Marines and SASR troops only to find out they'd been outplayed and get counter ambushed. I'm not sure how true it was (I heard the story from a Vietnam war vet, not a historical source) but I heard a story of the Viet Cong springing an ambush on some ROK marines only to discover the Marines already knew they were there and had silently killed about half the ambushers.

@@arthas640 This is very true and it goes much deeper than that. Just recently i dug deep into the VN war and part the ROKs played. It's crazy what they did. VNs still tell ghost stories about the ROKs and simultaneously are the only ones that deny that they got wrecked. It didn't take long before the VC even commanded their people to avoid conflict with ROKs. ROKs often came back with a k/d ratio of 20 : 1. All top political visits (Even from the US President) and General Westmooreland himself, were protected by ROKs, which speaks volumes. And these things are only scratching the surface.. As a Korean, I will say though, that the ROKs were also merciless, but this was mainly due to the predicament they found themselves in fighting the VC. Both the NVA/VC and ROKs played very dirty, although i must say, that the ROKs did it mainly to counter the VC methods

To any anyone saying the ROKs were inhumane, i‘d say that the NVA/VC weren‘t any better and initiated it in the first place. To anyone that says ROKs committed war crimes, i‘d say the VC not only committed war crimes against the enemy but also their own civilians. To anyone that says the VC/NVA were only fighting for freedom and unity, i‘d refer to the Tet Offensive or the „re-education“ camps invoked upon their own people, of which many were killed and tried to flee from. To anyone that says the ROKs did it only for money, i‘d refer to Korea‘s experience with communism (aka. North Korea) or the fact that many ROKs volunteered, even though most of their earned money went to the government. They wouldn‘t leave families and friends behind to fight in mosquito-ridden and booby trapped jungles for money, when most of it went to the Korean government.. As mentioned in the beginning, it‘s partially due to propaganda and partially due to willfull ignorance.
