Matthew Leung Ming-hong had been working as a breaking-news reporter for six years in Hong Kong but recently emigrated to the United Kingdom because of concerns about growing restrictions on journalists working in the city. Three Hong Kong media outlets popular with the opposition have folded in just six months, following the introduction of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong on June 30, 2020, raising fears about the future of press freedom in the city. The 29-year-old is starting a new life in Britain’s northern city of Manchester and plans to eventually resume his journalism career in Europe.

This youth can't even speak fluent English and he wants to emigrate to the UK? I hope he will get properly educated about the history of China and Hong Kong soon! The education curriculum in Hong Kong schools should have been revamped after 1997! The people of Hong Kong had been brainwashed by their colonial masters for generations, to think their motherland and culture is inferior and that the British are superior in every way. They never gave the local people any democracy during British rule and only gave them a taste of democracy by giving them the vote only a few years before they were supposed to return Hong Kong to China. In 1980 I was in Lancaster University in England and met some Hong Kong students. They had been brainwashed into thinking that when Hong Kong was returned to China, they would suffer under the Communist government and so many of them were desperate to emigrate to the UK. However, after 1997, the One Country 2 Systems proposed by Deng Xiaoping made Hong Kong prosper even more and Hong Kong became the freest city in the world for trade and business but the Central government never meddled in Hong Kong's government. The CPC should have checked the content of the textbooks used in Hong Kong schools, though, as these continued to denigrate the Mainland while adulating the British! Is it any wonder that youths like this young man are misguided and easily manipulated by Western agents eager to use them to overthrow the CPC? Give him a few years in the UK and he will realise how much "freedom" and respect he will get in the UK. He sees himself as "White" but they will stigmatise him as a "yellow" Chinaman!

Well said! His democracy and freedom of speech will be shut in the UK very fast! It's no big secret that the greatest threat to the US dollar reserve status is the rising of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa representing AU) economic powers - the countries were the resources are from to make the resource-poverty UK's economy work. The problem with the rights activists as Hong Kongers is extreme lack of financial education to think the Fragrant Harbour's shiny buildings was built by the Queen of England's fairy dust. Yet to the financially educated, the UK's 'hoarding Tories' hedge funds built the Fragrant Harbour's free-market capitalist model and exceptional smuggling port providing the world blood-diamonds and conflict minerals through the worst human rights violations of resource-based nations with Anglo American. It was a British-South African that founded the South African Communist Party (SACP) in the early 1920s as brother to CPC. The new generation Hong Kongers as rights activist really think everything revolves around their extreme ignorance.

Only cities like HK and Beijing are able to have this amount of freedom, solely because these cities are for business and trade. Why a difference in the government? How is having a one party system democratic? And also other minorities are getting squashed due to the Chinese government, areas where the practice islam, those people are sent to camps. Any country that doesn't let people have basic human rights like free speech or the freedom to practice whichever religion they want is not democratic at all. If a journalist is leaving to have 'freedom', do you really think it's a democratic country? A word against the government can quite literally ruin your life. The people aren't to blame here, the people who have power are to blame.

You can't really blame them, just look at them, most are just "too young, too naive, and too simple". They don't know how complicated world politics is. There was a day my HK friend expressed her tiredness living in HK due to political reasons and she hoped she got the chance to leave HK, however, when I asked where would she live if she decided to leave HK, she became quiet... Did he instigate riots? Did the reporters who report the protests instigate anything? You can arrest the people who break the law, including those white clad terrorists in Yuen Long, including those police who break laws. But arresting people for reporting facts can never be right and explained away. Are protests not news, are people peaceful protesting not worth reporting same as those acting violently? @@midasgold4223 If you report news that are true to the fact then that’s reporting. If you report one sided news that only create more riots and unstable society then that is not news. News is unbiased reporting. If you call people out there on the streets throwing fire bombs at subway stations peacefully protesting and the polices who are doing their job chasing you down are using excessive force then there is something wrong about your judgement. I am not saying all journalists are bad. But there are a lot of so call online journalists reporting so call reports that’s just one sided bias.

He’s leaving his life in Hong Kong. That’s a drastic move for someone who is and has obviously been loved by family, friends, colleagues and others. But his reasons are noble and I hope his new life in Manchester will be fruitful. I don’t doubt that it will be hard.

The question is, is the law always correct? Especially in a one party state? Back in the time, black people in the US were forbade from entering the banks. So they protest. Yes they may be “causing chaos”, but they were totally not “taking others’ freedom away”. They were fighting for what they deserve, but no one mattered acknowledged the major issue there, and would stay the same way if people kept silent. And those who protested for black people might might have violated laws, but were they doing the wrong thing?

You as mainland chinese don't know how is life for chinese people in Western countries, and I can assure you that his life will be MUCH worse in UK with freedom than in HK without "freedom". There are many things more important than freedom of speech in life: friends, family, the people you are surrounded, your home, your city, etc... do you wanna sacrifice all of that for just being able to criticize the government? For me the choice is obvious, I moved from a western country to China, and I choose China 1000x times, despite most my family and friends are not here. Stay strong everyone. I had to leave Hong Kong in October last year after 28 years. It was one of the hardest decisions. Where ever you go afterwards no may how hard or different to our life before in Hong Kong. You cannot underestimate the feeling of happiness you get from Freedom. I know many ex-Hongkongers in Canada and the US who regret they left Hongkong in 1997 because of western one-sided, negative propaganda against China. SCMP would make a true, valuable contribution by interviewing these ex-Hongkongers about why they regret leaving Hongkong. Such independent journalism would serve the Hongkong people better than churning out endless videos of Hongkongers making their questionable migration to UK. Don't Hongkong people learn in their school history class that UK is a country with a history steepest in global colonialism, violence and contempt toward non-West European people? UK is not even a liveable country due to its Anti Asian sentiment. The jobs awaiting Hongkongers are low- to medium skill jobs, i find it underwhelming how much these migrating Hongkongers trust the western mainstream media.

They won't understand, because they are already closed-minded and totally poisoned by hate. If you told them you are Chinese, pretty sure they would dislike or even discriminate against you (they really hate and deny themself as "Chinese"), let alone listen to your sincere words. The fact that there was some incident back then months ago when people like him were looking for fights against the local British Chinese who were protesting against anti-Asian racism...just tells how these guys think.

Its the problem of being an idealogue, the real world just doesn't work that way, I used to be him, until I was faced with the reality of how insanely more difficult it is to build a life as a first generation immigrant in a country with the majority being a different race, this guy will never become a well respected journalist in the UK because he will never shake off that thick "Chinese accent", and he will finally feel what it is really like being treated the same way he used to treat mainlanders in HK, its not as fun anymore when you are on the other end of the demonization stick.

@@TheRealIronMan true that, but at least he is not being threaten with arrests and jail time by a regime with little regard for rule of law. Immigrants need to have a realistic prospect of their life up ahead in a new society. There is nothing out of ordinary about that. This journalist may well be washing dishes in a back alley of a restaurant somewhere in Chinatown and there is nothing wrong with that. If he is smart, he can still move up from there.

If you look into events that happened around the world, you'll normally see a flood of ppl fled their countries by the tens of thousands for the following reasons- war, chaos, gen0side, famine, serious political instability, severe economic problem. HK has its own problems but it doesn't fit into the aformentioned categories. Rarely will you see ppl flees bcos of "Lack of Freedom".....at least not by the tens of thousands. So this begs the question-> Is the problem really has to do with the situation in HK??? or is it more to do with that particular individual??? I think is latter, WHAT DO YOU THINK? Btw I am from HK so don't tell me i don't know what is going on there

He left on his own free will and he's crying about it like someone forced him to. This guy is delusional. He probably has money if he's able to move to UK.
