Home to over 30 million people, Indonesia’s capital Jakarta is facing a mounting waste crisis as its main dump site, which is the largest in Southeast Asia, is now working at overcapacity. Bantar Gebang landfill receives about 7,500 tonnes of waste every day, as there is no alternate site to dump waste.

Back then, the largest Landfill in Southeast Asia was in Manila:Smokey Mountain and Payatas Landfill but now they are gone now because of transformation by support of local government like Payatas Landfill where the tragedy occurred in 2000 are closed now to become a park and bicycle path

@@blazingfire_0712no open landfilled here now because it is banned here. Wvery baranggays here have sanitary landfilleds to diaposed safely and process the garbage by recycling so we dont have open landfilled here like indonesia or thailand.

@@blazingfire_0712the garbage are totally gone because they treated and the past landfilleds are now become park here in ph. No such things like transfer because number 1 so expensive and second not easy to do. Build a processing facility is more possible and feasible.

Countries like Indonesian, ghana and Chile are also textile dumping grounds for the global north, it has mountains of cloth waste and other countries in africa are dumping grounds for European electronics waste. These countries need to stop taking other countries waste, China used to be take other countries plastic waste but they stopped it, other countries should follow this approach

1. Stop taking other nations refuse. Each nation should handle their own waste. 1. Get thousands of people (poor convicts homeless) in there to sort out as much as can be. 3. All paper should be made into international toilet paper to $upport the landfill. 4. Hold a contest with a significant purse for the winner of what can be safely made with sorted waste to improve the land and make profit. 5. Plant trees, bushes and grasses around the landfill to help the land and make oxygen. 6. What cannot be sorted and used must be ground up and burned as is. It's not rocket science we've known for decades what to do and how to do it.

Plastic cannot be recycled from a landfill. Only a certain type of plastics are recyclable. Incinerating it and generate power, that's how Singapore does it.

It sounds like a need for a significant expansion of recycling systems and modern waste to energy plant for the rest that can't be recycled. That should reduce the amount of waste and keep the whole area far cleaner.

It is banned in philippines to have an opened landfilled because of danger we have lamdfilled before but now it is banned here. Indonesia is about to elect a new president. Someone should try to highlight this waste problem (which is very serious) to the candidates and hear what they offer for solution. It's not an easy task, it will takes years to solve this trash problem as it has been systemic. Indonesian should give their voice to one that can solve the trash issue in long term with concrete actions.

this problem is not about corruption (while it does exist in many places in indonesia), but how indonesian citizen cannot stop using a single-use plastic people who says this is about corruption etc. are the ones that can't stop using plastic and dont care about the environment, and when a disaster (floods, health-problems) happens they will always blame it all on the government, and never try to fix the core of the problem which is single-use plastic

The gov't should invest in incenery and build a steam power plant. Use the plastic to burn as energy for the powerplant, Have a air and carbon catch for the fumes to make carbon. then carbon is used to to make landfills to expand the land. This is what Singapore is going.
