What would you do if Southern challenged you in a parade? The Human Jukebox has made their presence known for the 2024 Parade Season! From the looks of things, there were only high school bands there but that did not stop Southern from cranking on them too. This band has a unique formation setup for parades. Let’s look and listen to the Jukebox as we see them perform in the parade from various angles and videographers.

@@G-Rated It got worse. I was in Target trying to get some printer ink when the power went out. I saw some lights flashing and thought it was a fire drill. When i approached the light it was Southern's Cymbals players challenging me. I told them I played trombone and they pointed to some cymbals in the aisle and say STFU, pick up the Z's battle.

@@G-Rated Oh man, Southern was out of pocket that day! I was at a string orchestra concert featuring a guest harp player. Before the concert even started, Southern's drumline blocked up in front of the harp player blocking her way to the harp and started bumping. Then an announcer came from nowhere and said "your timpani and triangle player could neva! See you at the classic." I was like, what classic? Then heard a metal noise... I slowly turned and saw a pair of cymbals on the ground in front of the usher. I told him not to pick them up... he did anyway... so the cymbal players from Southern's eyes lit up and ran to him surrounding him. I left before it got worse, but apparently Steven Holiday did a review on it. That part I'm lying about.

When Doc Harris was there they were a force. It was Aug & Kennedy running the late 80s and 90s for sure. Again, I don't think no high school ever tried to actually challenge the U. More like show what they could do to impress them. At least to me anyway. I do recall The K running a field show similar to one of Southern's drills in the dome that was quite impressive. I used to call them Baby U lol

80's - 90's New Orleans. Most High school bands in N.O. were as Big as, if not bigger than a lot of college bands. Straight warfare. College bands had to be ready. Check the tape.

One time St Aug went at it with SU. I think it was in the early 90s in Baton Rouge

@georgedupre8617 I mean if that's how you see it. The Aug got that history and I ain't about to ever take away from that legacy. My Jr high band director Mr McKissiack at Phillips was a St Aug grad and told us if you don't go to The Aug go to The K. You and I both know the K was that school. We Ll know this. Class of 93-96. If anybody say the K wasn't the shit then, they lose all credibility with that. Love the Aug but, I represent the K. Oh we got yall many times too. Don't front.

I was a member of the Southern University Band program from Fall 1984-Spring 1988. During my freshman year, we were at a mardi gras parade in New Orleans; I believe it was Zulu which started real early in the morning from City Park. Anyway, it was cold and we were warming up our instruments while the high schoolers were blowing on each other (rivalries and bragging rights). A lot of the Jukebox were from New Orleans, so there was a lot of jabbering back and forth between them about their high school bands battle. All of sudden, St Augustine HS faced us and started playing. I was like, "Oh, they trying to impress us so we'll think highly of them when they come to Southern.". Then, I realized the New Orleans Jukes were talking about them blowing on us and I realized that, unlike in MS, these New Orleans High Schools actually think they can take a university band. I was like "Wow!" We cranked something like Black And Blues on them. Though there was no match, it was obvious from the New Orleans Jukes that this was the New Orleans band culture adn it only fueled them for us to blow back, while no losing their respect by not blowing back. I recently told some folks in a Smack Band page that New Orleans Mardi Gras parades aren't for everyone. You go there with a "I'll be your Huckleberry" band mindset, not a "Performance Trip" mindset. The latter will give you a horrible disrespected reputation in New Orleans and make you a negative social media trend.

My brotha, my brotha lol. SU would never crank on kids. However, there is footage of St Augustine HS (New Orleans) being the guest high school band at a Southern game and they were definitely turning heads that night (1990). Back then the Aug had serious numbers so they definitely brought the watts. Doc Greggs and Mr Hampton (St Sug) were friends and they would have their bands play aside one another for the crowd. It wasn't really a battle but more like a showcase. Having those high school appearances at these universities is a good recruiting technique for the college bands.

I love Southern’s sound in this parade formation. It’s similar to the wall you get from the stands, it’s a moving wall. Pretty impressive. My first HBCU game was Southern vs. Alabama State in 2013. I’ll never forget that day!. Both bands solidified their places in my heart.🔥💨

When I was in highschool many years ago and we actually looked & sounded like a college band we blew on Albany State at the botb one year 😂 we was 89 Strong till we went to DC we was 108😂😂

The horn swinging is called the Jaguar rock there is no band that looks better than SU in block parade formation marching!

This is New Orleans. Our high school bands crank on colleges every mardi gras season. I have seen SU get cranked on by Reed back when Talladega's old Director/ Mississippi Valley current director was the director there. And I have seen St. Aug crank on SU. It is a different mentality. Marching band is warfare here. And those kids respect musicians on the college level but also have the mindset that they are coming to take their spots in the fall.

Something has one of the most sloppiest parade formations in HBCB. They are a really good sounding band probably one of the best, but if someone could teach these kids how to March in a straight line formationwise, they will be pretty good.

Odd how their announcer always describes JSU marching style as "country" and they sway/rock quite similarly. 🤔 JSU does "Swing n Sway" although it has become less pronounced over time

Jsu changed their marching style to look like Southern’s… Jsu had a back and forth foward rocking style that was hilarious to watch.. Over the years they changed their style to imitate SU’s style… It’s not as pronounced as SU but u can see the similarities now..

@@JB-gi4is JSU has been doing "Swing and Sway" for over 40 years. They have not changed and they never had a back and forth motion. JSU did not change to look like southern at all. They've been doing Swing and Sway the whole time.

@@Wst15th you sound delusional… I stood in front of 99 NOASB. Sure it had power but still sounded like a high school…SU 99 would have cleaned y’all clock. The stamina and the intense sound of SU 99….NOASB wouldn’t be able to handle. Trust me, I know that was my senior year in the band.
