I just want to thank everyone who viewed this song and helped me reach 1,000,000.... I never imagined this video would be so popular 3 years ago. So I thank each and everyone of you.
~~~This song is property of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. I do not claim credit for this amazing song. This is just another non-creative video to one of my favorite songs.~~~~
Ok, this is the last time I'm replying to you, so listen up. I have grown up listening to this kind of music, this is what I love. Now this song in particular holds a lot of meaning to me. I made this video because I wanted to share what I love with people. The million views just showed me that others appreciate this as much as I do. Now I'm sorry if it didn't come off that way, truly I am. This isn't about the views, I'm just happy that so many others love and share this song too.
This song has so much meaning for me. When I was 23 I had the opportunity to travel to South America with my buddy and cruise around the Galapagos Islands. I had a small Walkman at the time because this is 41 years ago now, and to be 23 years old and having an opportunity to travel to such an exotic place was an awesome experience. So I went out on the deck one night after everyone had gone to sleep ,with this song playing in my headset and dancing under the Stars and under the Southern Cross and it was so exhilarating and such a milestone and benchmark in my life experience, it was just awesome. So the point is this song just brings back absolutely wonderful memories! When I play this song, even to this day I'm just immediately back in the Galapagos Islands on the deck of that beautiful cruise ship on a warm summer night under the Stars, and so grateful for such a beautiful life experience!
When I was 18 years old a looong time ago, I was standing a midnight watch on the USS America.So many stars in the sky, it was almost overwhelming. The bright blue-green glow of bioluminescent micro-organisms being churned up in the ship's wake. A warm wind and the slight vibration of the deck from a island of steel cutting through the Antlantic. This song popped into my head, and it all came together like God himself had handed me a moment of perfection and enlightenment, like it was all there just for me. I'll never have that moment again, but everytime I hear this song, I get pulled back to the memory of it.I pray that when I get old, and can't remember anything else, even my own name, that I can at least recall how I felt on that quiet night at sea.
Just the melody alone makes me weep. Anytime I hear this song, I feel I connect to an ancient emotion shared by collective humanity through all time. There are very few songs and music pieces that move me with such wonderful meaning. Southern Cross is one of those rare gems. What a gorgeous work of art. There’s something haunting about the melody and a genuine relatability in the poetry of the lyrics. The message of how insignificant our problems, worries, and conflicts can be when we’re in the presence of something far larger than us, like the majestic, starry, night sky is simply humbling.
The more I listen to this song the deeper it gets... The narrator knows sailing, his boat is order and he is making good time... his life is a mess though. He lost the love of his life and she is not coming back. The "Love will endure" line means he will never be over this. The promise of another day means his search will not end. It's actually pretty dark. When the lead drops out of time with the song and the chorus rises it highlights his helplessness. He can sail his boat but he can't figure out why she left or how to get her back.
the best thing about a well written song is that it has a special meaning for the writer, he/she tries to show that in the lyrics and the messages within. For us the listeners it could be heard by one million people and each one of us would have a different meaning to it, a time, a place, an event or sorrow or pure elation, and every answer is just as valid as the next and these emotions though all different, bring folks from every walk of life together for the duration of the song, I have loved this song from the first time I heard it, I didnt know about constellations or hemispheres or any of it, all I knew was that a time I was in a place in my life that was very painful and I heard this song, it gave me the courage to allow myself to cry and let my pain out, to me it was the first step in a healing process that took many years, I felt it was written just for me and I still do today, I love to read the comments after these songs, I love seeing that others have used this song to heal, to be reminded, to rejoice or to just feel safe, it is the power of music that makes it so two folks that have never met, could be total opposites in everything, but upon hearing this song could be stopped dead and begin to sing along with each other with completely different emotions flowing through them, Very very cool, and to you that served I say THANK YOU, being Canadian, service was something I never really thought of as a thing to do but I always knew there were folks that did and that kept me safe, again I say THANK YOU, there is one thing I can never understand and maybe a service person could tell me, how in the hell did you ever overcome the fear you must have felt in order to do your duty? This is something I will never understand. What a great song, thanks for letting me ramble
September and the rest of the Autumn of 1982, Room 266, Hemlock Dormitory, Mansfield State College, Mansfield, Pennsylvania, USA, the college radio station WNTE, 89.5, played this all the time. I was twenty years old and became enchanted with the melody and the lyrics and I wondered where is this mystical and magical Papeete and Marquesas? Then I saw the video and that orange cap he wears? Ever since then to this day I call my own cap just like the one he wore in the video my Stephen Stills cap, tho' mine is my preferred color of blue. I also decided back then in 1982 that Someday Maybe I Was going to travel to Papeete and the Marquesas. It became a quest for me to complete the journey. Forty-two years later and here I finally am with my wife and son who, ironically is twenty years old, like I was when Ii first heard the song. I am listening to Stephen Stills singing “Southern Cross” as I type out this comment in Papeete, 18 June 24. This Sunday, the 23rd, we will be in the Marquesas for ten days. All I can say is, “Wow”. I still cannot believe I am here. Thank you Stephen Stills for inspiring me to come here.
I don't know why but I had plied my trade in Sothern waters more than once but I never looked for it, the Sothern Cross. I was on a run just south of Pagan Island in 2011. On that run I first saw the Southern Cross. When I looked up and saw it I saw the Milky Way too! Couldn't help but feel that silver chain, the one that ever ties me to you! All the emotions from those years of long gone by hit me like a title wave. Even though you passed back in 1979. Truly made me know that I was glad to have come that way...
Saw CSN&Y re-unite for the first time in a LONG time in 1991, at the Santa Monica Civic for a benefit. It was for Dallas Taylor, their drummer, who needed a liver transplant. WHAT A SHOW. Neil also did a solo set, as did Don Henley, and Chris Hillman from The Byrds....with his group The Desert Rose band. All acoustic show.....in front of approximately 2500 sets of lucky eyes. UNBELIEVABLE show.
I was in my Freshman year in highschool when this song came out and, I guess being a musician, I fell deeply in love with this song immediately, so much so that I would stay up late at night hoping they'd play it on Mtv!! Those were the days!!! But they weren't new to me, I remember hearing their music when I was growing up in the late '60s and '70s because my mother always had the radio on at home or would play records for us. She was also a gifted singer that was never able to spread her wings and fly. She had such a beautiful voice. And nowadays everytime I hear that song it magically takes me back to my youth. That's the mark of a truly great song. If it brings tears to your eyes it's a true golden classic!! Such a talented group of musicians, especially Steven Stills, he amazes me. If any of you don't know, he wrote that song, forgot the exact title "just a song before I go" (?) You know which one...well he wrote that song in 20 minutes on a dare that he couldn't write a song in less than 30 minutes. And he wrote such a masterpiece in minutes! And won the bet to boot! All truly gifted musical geniuses!
