A 14+ km urban hike from Santa Luċija via Tarxien, Fgura and Bormla to Birgu and returning first via sea ferry across the Grand Harbour to Valletta then through Valletta’s suburbs Floriana, Pieta’, Hamrun and onward to Marsa and Paola. On the way we pass through the sleepy winding alleyways of Tarxien and the formidable fortifications of Cottonera, the Cottonera and Santa Margherita Lines, ending this first part of the hike in front of the Malta Maritime Museum at Birgu (Vittoriosa). We then catch the harbour ferry to Valletta and resume our hike through Malta’s capital city visiting The Upper Barrakka Gardens for spectacular views of the harbour. Onward through Floriana, we detour briefly into Ta’ Braxia Cemetery at Gwardamanġa and continue via Pieta’ to Ħamrun and Marsa. At Paola we pass by the run-down former Palazzo Perellos, the church dedicated to Saint Ubaldesca, the Basilica of Christ the King, the prehistoric Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and Ġesu’ Nażżarenu Chapel on the way back to Santa Luċija.
