This video depicts the ultimate passenger steam locomotive design that defeated the California Coastal Mountain Ranges. The Southern Pacific Gs2 and Gs4 "Daylight"!! There are many EXCLUSIVE photo's through out the video of the Daylight. Including my own photo's of the Daylight #4449 federally mandated tear down, inspection and rebuild. As well as photo's from my personal archives of Daylight Gs4 4449 in operation. And of course our artwork of the Daylight 4449 . There are many of the usual classic and rare Southern Pacific Daylight photo's found throughout as well. As well as some little known facts about the design itself.

As a kid, I rode this train from LA to SF in 1948. Views out the passenger car windows was obscured about every 10 minutes when a dense burnt oil cloud passed by. The food on the train was wonderful, all of the workers (conductor, chef, waiters etc) were so nice. I especially enjoyed the Dining Car experience.

What a wonderful story! To hear about your experience on the Daylight is about as genuine as it gets. While I appreciate the excursion runs steam makes today.. They are are nothing like what you had the privilege of experiencing. Even today, as you can see in the photo's, Daylight has quite the exhaust! I can only imagine what you saw while it was on those grades and pulling a full train. Thanks for sharing! That is a special story!

I thought your vide was excellently done. My WWII-widowed Mom and took the train in December to spend Christmas with my grandmother in downtown San Francisco. There, the shops were beautiful and window-shopping was much fun especially in the cool marine climate. Even at 80 I can still vividly recall the strolling. But, back to the train trip up and back. The passenger cars both time had some vacant seats and the Conductor, a jolly old guy (but not St. Nick, of course) allowed me to move from side to side in the car as specially interesting scenery passed by the big widows. All the cutlery and dishes were quality, the Dining Car service superb. Even as a kid I felt like I had entered the Halls of Classy Behavior!

Thank you for the compliment about the video! Much appreciated! If I am to be honest, I really do not like my formatting on the whole for my video's. They simply aren't interactive enough, but rather straight forward and safe. In other words I do not voice my own opinions enough to spur conversation. I spent a few hours writing scripts from a library of books, when I am actually pretty knowledgeable shooting from the hip as well. So my next video is going to be largely off script and I have the perfect locomotive to start doing it with :) By all accounts, Southern Pacific really went all out on their service with the Daylight runs. Not just in California, but EVERYWHERE. Eggleston's touch with Daylight paint scheme was deliberate and a nod to the Milwaukee's Hiawatha. Streamlining had the cool factor with the customers, but was also deliberate I believe because of not only the Hiawatha's, but to compete with the Zephyr diesel as well. The railroads at that time did not want any diesel locomotive gaining an edge. And neither did the big 3 manufacturers. They all went all in on steam, and it cost them all their business. But the Daylight, and Southern Pacific is definitely in my top 5 of all locomotives and companies. Thanks again! I love talking steam with you all ;)

We rode the Daylight holiday train in Portland 3 or 4 years ago and got quite a bit of smoke just out of that little run. I can only imagine what a full route would produce. They do burn "hard" and definitly don't meet today's emission standards! LOL! Daylight is a very attractive locomtoive though. One of the best we have seen. Southern Pacific did well there.

Thanks for bringing that up. Daylight did indeed belch quite a bit of exhaust on the run. I still like the Hiawatha and the J's better though! :)

A couple years ago my wife and I got to ride in the cab of SP4449 while she was running a holiday train here in Portland. It was amazing.

@@TheRailroadCrossing-SteamPower that is so cool! I only recently discovered your channel. I love your content. Do you eventually plan to cover locomotives like different types of narrow gauge steam engines used on railroads like those used in logging operations, plantations, the D&RG, or the WP&Y?

@TheRailroadCrossing-SteamPower 4 ай бұрын
@@A54729 One way or the other anything of relevance will be covered for sure. Narrow Gauge obviously wasn't widely used.. But the Durango did put it on the map. And of course that will be the first one that specifically gets covered. Thank you for being here and for the lovely comment!

Anyone know why sp gs-4 has 6” more between the 1st and 2nd drivers than the rest? It’s very intriguing
