C. Vision Productions presents “Southern Pacific Steam in the 1950s” from the films of Doctor Wayland Paul Matt. Many classes of SP steam locomotives are featured, including GS-4, Baldwin F-4, F-5, and C-9, SP-built Mountain MT-4, Cab Forwards AC-10, AC-11, and AC-12, Baldwin narrow gauge 4-6-0 number 18, and much more. You will see many of these classic steam locomotives in charge of both passenger and freight trains in the San Joaquin Valley of California, with several pacing scenes included along highway 99 near Bakersfield. We also visit Tehachapi Pass in both the steam and diesel eras. As an added bonus, we’ll tour SP’s narrow-gauge line in the Owens Valley of eastern California, where Southern Pacific Baldwin 4-6-0 number 18 is seen in operation. Included in this segment is a scene of workers transferring railroad ties from a standard-gauge car to a narrow-gauge car in Owenyo. For those interested in seeing SP 4449 in revenue service, Doctor Matt captured the now-famous steamer on the “San Joaquin Daylight” passenger train number 51, as it departed Bakersfield, California. To round out the program, we’ll take a brief look at Southern Pacific passenger trains powered by EMD models SD9, SDP45, and F7B. Take yourself back to the final years of steam operations on the Southern Pacific, in this full-length video presentation.

Not gonna lie, I’ve always loved the GS6’s more than the GS4’s. The GS6’s simple black and silver paint looked beautiful when leading either freight or passenger consists. Also their silver pilot looked beautiful at night, it really stood out in camera flashes.

My grandpa was an engineer for the SP out of Bakersfield, CA. I remember meeting him at the yard when I was 4yrs old, he would carry me back to the house and I would listen to his watch tick. I am 70 now and have his watch, pictures of him on the cab forwards and the Daylight. Might be him in one of theose locos.

I was a letter carrier in Tracy (1988-2008). On my postal route, lived several retired locomotive engineers. Occasionally, they'd tell me about there lives on the SP Railroad. I was a child when steam was phased out & I have a vague recollection about them. We lived on the SF Peninsula, about a mile from the SP tracks & we'd see the SP yards when we went to visit relatives in SF.

Thank you, C Vision for this Steam special! All these places are around where I live. Born in 53', I just missed out on all this steam action 😢 I did get to see the 4449 twice. Once it stopped for the night in Santa Barbara. In the A. M. we watched her back up to her train headed for L.A. what a beautiful Engine. Got to meet the engineer. He had a photographer bugging him to blow the whistle a certain way, & he got pissed. "Well you wanna get up in the cab and take her? I got a lot on my mind pal" I loved it. His name was Doyle i think. Anyways, thanks guys. P.j . Carpinteria Calif

They seem to be mislabled, but this might be the first production I've seen of every class of GS from Lima, and even beyond! GS-2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are all here. We also have Baldwin GS's represented with the GS-7's (those 4-8-4's with the lower square tenders)

2:05 It's nice to see only preserved GS-4 class Daylight #4449 in revenue service on film during the days of steam. She's my most favorite steam locomotive. My grandparents, two uncles and my dad saw her with the American Freedom Train in February 1976 while living at San Antonio, Texas. I got a chance to see 4449 at Train Festival 2009 in Owosso, Michigan. Definitely worth a lifetime to see this beautiful streamlined steamer.

Great video, but I would just like to point out that there is some misidentification of some GS locomotives. 4472 is a GS-8, 4460 is a GS-6, etcetera
@nikerailfanningttm9046
@nikerailfanningttm9046 9 ай бұрын
4472 is a GS1, originally built for Texas And New Orleans as their No.702, later acquired by Southern Pacific in 1953, renumbered to 4404, and last renumbered to 4472. 4472 would be retired from the roster and scrapped on July 9th 1956.

Thank you for pointing that out. Very little updating was done in preparation for this video’s release on KZfaq. We usually try to go through and remove anything that isn’t quite right before a program is re-released.
