It's taken me 17 odd years of collecting to finally tuck one of these Big Ms into my collection. It sits alongside an m3h and m3rt1...all of which make me feel a little bit closer to Bob Swanson when I look at them.

I actually used a recording of this for a train animation recently... I probably should've asked first, haha. But that's a really nice M5. M5s are my favorite horn and this is a great example of one.

it is probably off of a Southern E-Unit or a Passenger F-unit. like the SOU 6133 F7 and SOU 6900 E8 at the North Carolina Transportation Museum

The green means it was definitely a passenger unit.

Such a beautiful musical horn. It's sad that the M5 fell out of favor. Question, what exactly made M horns so hard to maintain? Was it their internal setups or?

@somekindofmagic7776 6 жыл бұрын
M-5s were fitted with alterable chambers which determined the notes and would force the railroads to monitor these in order to maintain the correct chord and sound volume. M-5s utilise different sized items across each bell which in turn made them far less economical to use and retain.

SomeKindOfMagic sorry for the late reply, I'm just now seeing your response. Oh I see, that makes a lot of sense. Seems like it would make a nightmare for the maintenance of each horn on each Loco. Thank you.

You can if you want, but its not a good recording for that purpose. Because of how much air M5's use, the sound drops off immediately after I open the valve. Loot at the audio on a analyzer program, because of how it drops off its imposable to loop the sound and get a consistent tone.
@railroadskater2896
@railroadskater2896 7 жыл бұрын
If an M5 uses that much air, and sometimes the tone gets inconsistent, that must be the case with Winchester Western 517's M5. (Their 445 apparently also used to have an identical-sounding M5 but was replaced with a not-as-pleasant IMHO P5 years back.) This is the closest sounding M5 to WW's horns that I've found on the internet so far, a nice bright sound I practically grew up with, wish there were more of these around. At least, in spite of their little quirks, they don't foul so easily like the Leslie RS5T.

You should do a breakdown of an M series horn to show what the internals look like. I don't think there's a video of that online.
@mafarnz
@mafarnz 7 жыл бұрын
+TommyBNSF I'd like to do that sometime, but I'll need to first find an M horn to take apart. My M3 is still factory seal wired, no way I'm opening that up. The M5 in this video sounds so good I don't want to chance messing up the tuning.

You have an absolutely fantastic sounding horn here, but that thing must really need some air because the valve isn`t being opened all of the way and I like it to sound full.

Indeed! As it happens the last order of M5’s built for a railroad was in the early 1980’s for WP.

Horn collectors need to be very careful of their sources when purchasing horns as theft is a very common problem. This particular horn looks amazingly similar to the one which was stolen from a Southern FP-7 at the NC Transportation Musuem
@mafarnz
@mafarnz 7 жыл бұрын
I've owned this horn since before that theft occurred.
@WBDE
@WBDE 7 жыл бұрын
I attempted to word my comment carefully so as not to accuse you of stealing this horn. It is not possible to positively identify the stolen NCTM horn; however, steps have been taken since that time to mark each NCTM horn and to make them much more difficult to steal. I was not aware of the prevalence of horn theft until our's was stolen; and we learned a hard lesson in that replacing the stolen horn was extremely expensive. Most are not aware, nor do they care, that when a horn is stolen from a locomotive, it renders the locomotive inoperable in single-unit service until the horn can be replaced. My comment was merely cautionary that legitimate horn collectors need to be careful of it's provenance when one becomes available.
@mafarnz
@mafarnz 7 жыл бұрын
My apologizes, I got a little too uptight in my original comment. I personally make sure that I get all my horns from reputable sources, and I don't buy anything that I know was stolen. Horn theft is unfortunately a problem, and it makes legitimate horn collectors like myself look bad because people often think the only way to get one is to steal it.

@mafarnz

This M5 was originally built with 3/16 inlets, but the previous owner modified it to a 5/16 inlet. So yes, it does sound like an older model M5, and that's one of the things I like about it.

Sounds a bit like a "out of tune" old cast P5
@mafarnz
@mafarnz 8 жыл бұрын
+JakesGP35 The P5 was actually developed several years AFTER the M5, and was originally intended to sound the same notes as the M5. One major difference in the sound besides the timbre is that the P5 is on the diatonic scale, where as the M5 is not.
