Because it takes more skill to play & dance at the same time with the entire band. Not just Tubas & percussion standing in on place playing. Oh yeah I'm Marching 100 Alumni 91-95 it's a big difference

1. The analogy is a non-sequitur. 2. Are you a dancer or a musician? I like to think that I was a musician who danced, not a dancer who so happened to play an instrument. For me the putting down of the instruments is just one example of a bigger problem in SU's music program; it shows that there isn't really a philosophy or any thoughtfulness behind what SU does. The band is just lifting legs (no tuck, no drive in the marching); it is just blasting noise (no balance or musicianship in the playing); and it is just dancing (no understanding regarding what a dance routine is).

Some of the bands' preferences have been debated for decades: FAMU's percussion section will NOT respond to a challenge. Ever. Southern's percussion section typically plays (rhythmically) easy cadences while the band marches in. FAMU will NOT ever blast at another band even if they ever get back to 400+. They consider it beneath them because they take pride in musicianship. Both percussion sections have unorthodox tuning practices and approaches to technique that are different than what many people are accustomed to. They are acquired tastes. Southern Will ALWAYS put their instruments on the ground during their dance routine. I don't know why and some people can't stand it. But it's what they do. I understand people's concerns, but Southern will not stop putting their horns on the ground, so it's best to accept it and appreciate what they bring to the table. LOL Great show, SU. I enjoyed it! I always enjoy their dance routines.

@@dr.d-i-t9227 neither, I'm a music lover. Been studying music since middle school. Also have a brother who has a master in jazz studies. And spent some time in New Orleans and Baton Rouge (capital of jazz). If you ever listen those 5-6 piece jazz guys who March up and down the street. You can hear the percussion session and hear the exact sound Southern uses. I know a lot of people don't like it. But like you said it's a required taste. Jazz and bounce music plays a major part in how Southern plays and writes their music

IF you like watching the same show for the last 50 years with different music. Same DM INTRO, SAME UNIFORMS, same instruments on the ground, same block band dance routines, same gimmick 3 blue-eyed fat Boyz dancers, imitating the FAMU RATTLER but they are running not fast marching, same not dancing and playing at the same time. IF YOU LIKE ANY OF WHAT I JUST MENTIONED. PRETTY GOOD SHOW. But REAL MARCHING BAND FANS KNOW BETTER.

A good show. I wish I were there in person. I think SU took Halftime though. It's no contest when it comes to drilling. The Dancing Dolls were clean and cohesive. The dance routine was better than FAMU's too.

The field show was decent . I give it a 80/100 could’ve been better Ig . Dolls were like the field show . I give them a 85/100 . I also feel like since it’s the 50th they should be going all out ! However ik it takes time for that . Southern , ik y’all can give me more than what y’all been giving me . I’m not disappointed, I’m just not wowed yet ! 😕🤭

Randy Watson it’s their style . My dad is a 80s juke and mom is a 80s dancing dolls . Those things will never change . I’m not understanding why every year everyone ask the sane questions. Like with famu and their tradition, you have no choice but to respect it .. anywho it’s great to see both bands meet again after so long . But the top programs in their conference

Black Swan true, true. I check in for the halftime show, and that’s all. I have no dance expertise whatsoever, but I know what I like to see, and the stands this year are not it. I catch glimpses from videos people post and caught one cute new routine, but I can’t even be bothered to check for others myself😞😞😞

I enjoy watching the HBCU bands......SU sounds good but their shows are boring, what SU and their fans don't understand is that the halftime show is supposed to ENTERTAIN the audience. If you are not a musician the average person doesn't relate to terms like "musicality"...they are looking to be ENTERTAIN!! and That is why FAMU is the most well-known HBCU band because THEY ENTERTAIN THE CROWD. Their dance routines are what separates them from other bands and also their 360 fast steps per minute.....which SU does a horrible job of mimicking......Both bands are good but FAMU is the more ENTERTAINING band. Good shows from both bands
